Gründungsbüro RPTU&HS Kaiserslautern ZukunftsRegion Westpfalz e.V. Winning Skills for CFO´s During my career, I have learned from 3 exceptional CFOs what it takes to be successful in finance AND business and they shaped my understanding of impactful leadership. Let me share 5 key winning skills and my learnings: 1️⃣ Personal Proximity: Each mentor was deeply approachable, fostering trust, accountability, and open communication. ↳ Learning: Challenge & push, ask questions, communicate & inform. 2️⃣ Competence without Arrogance: They demonstrated finance and business knowledge with the ability to read numbers and put them into a business story, never overshadowing others but inspiring confidence through clear goals and guidance. ↳ Learning: Learn, share, inspire, motivate. 3️⃣ Decision-making under Uncertainty: Whether navigating external or internal challenges, their ability to follow their instincts in doing the right things and making informed decisions, even with incomplete information was remarkable. ↳ Learning: Assess, challenge, act and correct (if needed). 4️⃣ Resilience: Facing setbacks and pressure, they maintained strong leadership and took full responsibility for their teams. ↳ Learning: Observe & absorb, be accountable, take ownership. 5️⃣ Building strong Teams: They understood that success is not a solo show. By empowering and cultivating talent around them, they built powerful teams. ↳ Learning: Be available, talk, spread energy, and not be self-centered. These skills go beyond numbers; these CFOs showed me that combining heart, dedication with expertise is the true winning formula. What skills do you believe are essential for CFOs today?

Poor financial knowledge driving insolvency? In Germany, in 2024, around 21,800 companies filed for insolvency (+22% YoY). Estimates for 2025 predict over 22,000 insolvencies, which means averaging more than 60 companies per day. Mid-sized businesses (51–250 employees) are especially vulnerable, with insolvencies rising over 15% in early 2025.   From my experience, the root causes often boil down to poor financial management, as one key reason, including: ↳ Cash-flow mismanagement ↳ Underestimating capital needs ↳ Weak working capital management ↳ Lack of cost control ↳ Inadequate forecasting and financial controls   To turn this around, I would see the following opportunities: ↳ Improving financial knowledge ↳ Focus on cash flow ↳ Liquidity and capital planning ↳ Rigorous cost control to protect margins and value   And remember: It all starts with driving your top-line growth and truly understanding your customers ✅ ↗️ Where do you see the biggest opportunity to strengthen financial health? Let's discuss!

What finance manager do you need? Usually, we know these 3 types of finance managers: 1️⃣ The Analytical Expert (The spreadsheet Ninja) ↳ Excels at detailed financial analysis, budgeting, and reporting. Ensures accuracy in financial data and compliance with accounting standards. ↳ Strength: Precision ↳ Weakness: Miss strategic and business insights 2️⃣ The Strategic Planner (The Risk Whisperer) ↳ Focuses on long-term financial planning, risk management, and investment decisions. Aligns financial goals with overall business strategy to drive sustainable growth. ↳ Strength: Preparing the business for any storm ↳ Weakness: Overly cautious, delaying decisions. 3️⃣ The Collaborative Partner (The People Person) ↳ Bridges finance with other teams effortlessly. Communicates complex financial information in an accessible way to support informed decision-making across teams. ↳ Strength: Clear communication and collaboration across teams. ↳ Weakness: Lack deep technical finance skills. Key question: Who’s the best for steering your business? The winner for me is the one WHO combines sharp data mastery and a clear vision for numbers (precision) with strong risk awareness (foresight), all while communicating effectively as both a leader and trusted business partner (teamwork). This setting empowers businesses to navigate complexity and seize opportunities with confidence. 👉 Which type would you like to have in finance? Share your ideas in the comments!
