𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 Winter in Canada is breathtaking — but it can also be dangerous if you’re not prepared. Understanding how our bodies lose heat in extreme cold can help prevent serious cold-related injuries. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐝𝐲 Radiation: Heat leaves the body when surrounding air is colder than our internal temperature. Conduction: Direct contact with cold surfaces or water rapidly increases heat loss. Convection: Air movement carries heat away from the body — layered clothing traps warmth. Evaporation: Sweating and even breathing remove heat through moisture loss. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐦 ✔️ Layer up: moisture-wicking base, insulating middle, waterproof outer layer ✔️ Protect extremities: gloves, insulated boots, warm hat ✔️ Stay dry: change wet clothing immediately ✔️ Keep moving — but avoid sweating too much 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 Wind doesn’t change the air temperature, but it steals body heat by blowing away the warm air near the skin. High-speed winter activities like skiing, running, cycling, and tobogganing increase exposure. Always check the wind chill index and cover exposed skin. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐞 & 𝐇𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐚 — 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘦: • Numbness, tingling, pale or waxy skin • Skin feels hard or frozen • Blisters in severe cases ✔️ Move to a warm area, gently rewarm with warm water (not hot), and seek medical care. 𝘏𝘺𝘱𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘢: • Shivering, confusion, slurred speech, fatigue • Weak pulse, slow breathing, loss of coordination ✔️ Hypothermia is a medical emergency.
