🎉 And that's a wrap! Last week, the #NextGenTriggers community gathered at CERN' s Globe of Science and Innovation for the 2nd NGT Technical Workshop, a vibrant three-afternoon workshop focused on advancing trigger systems for the #HiLumiLHC . Bringing together over 100 participants, both in person and online, the event provided a fantastic opportunity for #collaboration and knowledge exchange on this critical aspect of high-energy physics. From advances in heterogeneous computing and new physics benchmarks, to major progress across low- and high-level triggers in the ATLAS Collaboration and CMS Collaboration, participants explored innovative ideas that will help us build faster, smarter, and more resilient real-time data-processing systems for the HL-LHC era. 🔗 Curious to know more? The full article with highlights from all the advancements presented last week is now available on: https://lnkd.in/d-YYJd2e A huge thank you to all the speakers, participants, and organizers who made this event a success. Let’s keep the momentum going as we work toward the future of data analysis and trigger systems in high-energy physics!

👉 Thinking about applying to the 2026 CERN openlab summer student programme? Here’s more insight into what makes this experience so unique! Meet Aikaterini Nikou (The University of Edinburgh) and Sarthak Negi (Jaypee Institute Of Information Technology), two 2025 summer students who brought their skills and curiosity to CERN this year. Aikaterini worked on developing a CoPilot tool using Large Language Models to support editorial and analysis tasks at the CMS Collaboration, while Sarthak contributed to the cold storage infrastructure for scientific data, enabling S3 Glacier functionality on the CTA system. They describe the programme as inspiring and overwhelming in a good way, and both highlight how intellectually and academically rewarding the experience has been. 🚀 From working on impactful research to engaging in thought-provoking discussions with CERN researchers and mentors, they were fully immersed in an environment designed for exploration and growth. The tailored CERN openlab lecture programme also played a key role, offering structured learning in a wide range of computing topics. 🔗 Apply now for summer 2026: https://lnkd.in/daq3TtSB 📚 Discover more about the projects from past years: https://lnkd.in/ddN9fyJg    #CERNopenlab #SummerStudents2026 #ScientificComputing #LLM #ColdStorage #AI #DataPreservation #CERN #StudentOpportunities #STEMCareers

The The Nobel Prize and CERN have overseen a long list of discoveries and breakthroughs that continue to evolve our understanding of the universe and influence technology, society, and culture. Nobel Prize-winning achievements that still shape our world: 🔹 1984 – Discovery of W & Z bosons, carriers of Nature’s weak force (Rubbia & van der Meer) This landmark achievement remains a cornerstone of the Standard Model and continues to guide cutting-edge particle physics today. 🔹 1992 – Multiwire Proportional Chamber (Charpak) This revolutionary invention transformed how particles are tracked, and laid the groundwork for innovations beyond physics: from medical imaging and diagnostics to security scanning and research infrastructures worldwide. 🔹 2013 – The Higgs mechanism (Englert & Higgs) The discovery of the #HiggsBoson by the ATLAS Collaboration and CMS Collaboration in 2012 reshaped our understanding of the universe and continues to drive new scientific questions. In 2013, the Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded to François Englert and Peter Higgs for their 1964 proposal of the Brout–Englert–Higgs mechanism, now confirmed. Anchored at CERN and inspired by the legacy of the Nobel Prize, the newly launched residency programme #CollideStockholm invites artists to reflect on the cultural and societal impact of fundamental science and advanced technologies. Collide Stockholm is Arts at CERN’s international residency programme in partnership with the Nobel Prize Museum. 🔗 Learn more about the open call and apply via arts.cern © Images:  1. CERN wins ATMO Award 2025 in the category Best-in-Sector/Industrial End User   Pierre Hanf – Project Leader for Refrigeration, Cooling and Ventilation at #CERN – accepted the prize last week at the ATMOsphere Europe Summit.   The award honours excellence in the implementation of natural refrigerant-based systems. It was awarded to the Laboratory for the ongoing work of upgrading the refrigeration systems of its particle detectors in preparation for the high-luminosity phase of the #LHC.   The upgrade is the result of a remarkable collaborative effort, involving several teams across CERN, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and industrial partners, and will contribute to savings of about 40 thousand tonnes of CO2-equivalent per year in the ATLAS Collaboration and CMS Collaboration. Cancer treatments have often followed hot on the heels of innovations in fundamental research. This edition explores particle therapy – an application of accelerators that looks set to surge in importance in the coming decades. The key to progress, our correspondents argue, is for accelerator and detector physicists to engage with clinical needs and the radiobiology of cells. This issue also marks the passing of Herwig Schopper and John Peoples, lab directors whose leadership helped shape high-energy physics. Today, the future is being shaped once again. Experiments and experimental strategies are maturing in China, and Europe’s ongoing strategy process has published its physics briefing book – a key resource for deciding CERN’s next flagship collider. To help busy Courier readers navigate the document, ECFA chair Paris Sphicas has distilled hundreds of pages of insights into just four. CERN Courier exists to promote international cooperation, knowledge sharing and community building in fundamental science. The November/December edition is now live.
