[Desktop] Recently Played section not updating anymore

Hi team,

For any reason, the Mac Desktop "Recently Played" section doesn't get refreshed.

The one of the web player of the iOS app works perfectly.

I already did a clean reinstallation of the desktop app and the issue occurs whatever other laptop I use.

(see attached screenshots)

Any idea?

Anyone? 🙂

This has been an ongoing problem and Spotify continues to ignore it. Some people's Recently Played Artists section hasn't updated in more than a month. The mods continue to ignore most complaints, too. Paying customers don't deserve explanations, I guess, and should just put up with a glaring error that interferes with the platform's purpose.

user-removed

The "fun" fact is that only the Desktop app home page seems frozen.
On section "Recently played" from the left menu seems accurate and updated live.

Same problem here, no issues on my phone but my desktop app has had the same albums on the top of the home screen for at least 3 weeks now. Couple this with the confusing decision that removed our option to clear the recently played list (I think that was just last year?) - not to mention the fact that the album on the top is a tv soundtrack that I only played to indulge a friend I was giving a ride to, not anything I plan on ever listening to again - and we end up with a pretty frustrating scenario. Best fix would be to give us back the option to clear Recently Played, then it wouldn't matter much if it gets stuck.

Visitor

Unfortunately, my recently played hasn’t updated in over 2 months now. I’ve tried all the basic troubleshooting on here (uninstalling the app, switching my password, toggling between the private listening sessions, etc) with no success at all. I’m ready to cancel my premium account over this!!! The only thing I can think of was I deactivated Facebook for a while and think that may have something to do with it. I’m not even able to log back in with Facebook now. Please help!!! I’d hate to cancel a 7 year paid subscription with Spotify over something that seems so simple to fix!!

Casual Listener

Wanted to point out that this is an issue for the Windows client also.

Community Legend

Same issue! I've had it for many many months already!

Visitor

Why is this still an issue? My phone and webapp have been fine with my recently played history. My desktop has been frozen for months after reinstalls and logouts I still have the same one stupid album on my front page.

Hey there @mintleafrei,

Thanks for posting on the Community about this.

If you still can't see your Recently Played tab properly updating on the Spotify desktop app we'll need you to provide us with some more details so we can pass them on to the right folks investigating the issue. Make sure you give us the following info:

  • Make and model of the affected device
  • Device OS
  • Exact Spotify version installed
  • Any troubleshooting steps you tried

Once we've collected the above details we'll be able to take a closer look and get back to you.

We'll look out for your reply!

@mintleafrei @Ivan
This issue persists for me as well, albums and playlists that I listened to months ago get stuck in the recently played section. It's been this way for over a year at this point.

Make/Model: Custom built PC
OS: Windows 10 Home (64-bit)
OS Version: 2004
OS Build: 19041.508

Spotify version: 1.1.41.634.gc2c73ca7
Troubleshooting: Cleared cache, browser cache, code cache, GPU cache, cookies files, reinstalled Spotify, deleted prefs file, deleted recently-played.spa file, logged out and back in.

Newbie

I'm also having this issue:

Macbook Pro 15" Touchbar (2018)

MacOS Catalina 10.15.6

Spotify 1.1.41.634.gc2c73ca7

I can clear items out of my "Recently Played" manually, but those deleted items continue to remain on the home screen under "Recently Played" even after quitting the app/signing out.

Visitor

@Ivan
To clarify the Recently Played tab works fine and as intended, but the section on the Homepage at the top labeled Recently Played is stuck on a single album. A friend linked it to me to get my opinion and since then it has invaded the space of my Homepage without leaving room for anything I actually recently play.

Windows 10
1.1.42.622.gbd112320
Reinstalled spotify, logged-in and logged-out, tried to open other playlist links

Visitor

This issue was opened in Dec 2019 and Sep 2020 its still an issue. Home screen has updated on the desktop app maybe a few times in the last year. Currently had the same "Recently played" for about 3 months now. Before that it was stuck for another few months. I don't understand how their software has been broken for so long when they are (were) the top music streaming service around.

This applies to my windows installs on two computers and on my linux install, so its definitely not specific to one platform. Happens on latest version 1.1.42.622.gbd112320. Have tried reinstalling, relogging into account, trying all different types of music (playlists, albums, radio, release radar, etc), cookies are enabled.

I think daily mixes are updating, but recently played, the first thing you see when opening the app, does not. I know daily mixes were stuck on my account for about a month before recently updating in all apps.

Visitor

For me the issue was fixed, in the desktop app in Windows and Linux and in the Android app.

My home screen was showing bands I've never listened to because I think my account was compromised, but I changed the password.

Linux Desktop app version: 1.1.26.501.gbe11e53b

Android app: 8.5.76.962

Newbie

From what I see here, Spotify is ignoring this issue since Jan 2019.  I'm using spotify on varying devices  and seeing the same two albums I haven't played for months now on "recently played" home screen is really getting on my nerves.

If the issue is about device model or OS, how come I see that home screen on every different device I sign in. newly installed app on a brand new PC should be getting the data from somewhere.

Visitor

Please just give this to an engineer already.

Visitor

This is absolutely pathetic. Do better spotify

Hey there folks,

We really appreciate you bearing with us while our teams are working on this!

We don't have any more info to pass on for now but rest assured that we'll share any updates here in this thread once we have them.

In the meanwhile, we'd recommend making sure that the app is up to speed with the latest version available so you won't miss any improvements and fixes coming your way.

Have a lovely day 🙂

Casual Listener

I hope this will be fixed soon. I just wanna add that maybe it somehow related to subscription? I was on one month free period and everything was fine. I subscribed few days ago and this problem appeared for me. Recently played on Home screen not updating since I subscribed.

I’m kinda mad because I really like desktop app for Spotify and it’s main reason why I use Spotify instead of Apple Music because iTunes is annoying to use on Windows.

Visitor

i cant believe this issue is still ongoing after almost a year, i understand it's probably not top priority but cmon

Newbie

How is this in the "not right now" status? we pay for the service, and we don't even get attention for annoying problems like these? i'm tired of seeing always the same albums/artists on my homepage. it's time you should fix it.

Casual Listener

I Googled this exact question because it's been bugging me for months, I see a thread with the exact issue marked 'solved', and the solution is...

Not right now?

C'mon Spotify, sort it out. I'm paying €180 a year for this service and I have a reasonable expectation that this includes basic bug fixes.

Had a similar issue fall 2019.

For me a uninstall, and reinstall across all devices: iphone, ipad and desktop and resolved the issue.

A previous commenter said:

A friend linked it to me to get my opinion and since then it has invaded the space of my Homepage without leaving room for anything I actually recently play.

I also noticed that the two albums stuck on the home page "recently played" on my Windows 10 desktop app were ones that were shared with me as links and that I opened and probably played in the web player. Things I play directly from the desktop app don't show up.

I just tried playing something new in the web player and so far it hasn't shown up yet in the desktop app. But I think there is some kind of pattern here.

Visitor

Yeah, desktop version (W10) is broken, recently played on home page shows old things.
Android app shows recently played just great.

Casual Listener

I'm having this issue too on my desktop install. Recently played works fine on my iPhone – but it's at least 3/4 months out of date on my desktop...

Newbie

this is SOOOO annoying. please tell the managers handling these bugs to put this on the dev's TODO list

Newbie

This has been going on for more than a year for me.
Me and my friends are cancelling premium until this is fixed.

Newbie

I just switched to PC recently as I built a gaming PC and this is soooooooo annoying. Please make this a priority!

Visitor

Fix this already!

It's been broken for months. Someone played a couple joke artists on my desktop app for a laugh and now they haven't gone anywhere for weeks.

I pay for this software. Fix it.

Visitor

I am having this issue as well. What makes it worse is that someone recently hacked my Spotify account and played several artists/playlists that I have never listened to, included a playlist titled "Sad Harm." As someone who has survived what could be described as "sad harm," seeing this title prominently displayed on my Home screen every time I open Spotify makes me extremely uncomfortable, to the point that I have spotted using the Spotify desktop app on my Mac.

I'm a Premium customer. Extremely disappointed to see that this has been a known issue since 2019 and is still not fixed.

Newbie

Why even have recently played on the home tab if you're not going to fix this? Recently played on the home page for me only displays a single album. I listened to part of a single song from that album because someone linked it to me as a joke. Never listened to the song again.

It's just weird. Why keep a feature like this on the main page of your app if it doesn't even function correctly?

Newbie

Since this section is okay on the web player, I assume it is not a database issue.
Should not be difficult to fix. Or maybe, it implies rewriting some old code and they don't want to get the job done.

Maybe we should all leave for Deezer or some other...

Casual Listener

@Gaborin The web player is not OK for me - I have 4 artists in 'Home/Recently Played' that were not recently played, and they've been there for months now. This is the same problem I have on the Desktop app on macOS and the iPhone app.

The 'Your Library/Recently Played' section of the web player, iPhone app and the macOS Desktop app is fine (meaning when I play an artist, they appear in the list). That just makes it all the more weird - I would have thought they could simply populate both sections with the same information across all apps.

Newbie

I don't know how, but the issue is fixed for me.

I ended my premium subscription, returned to free account and voilà... recently played section is gone.

sorry guys. if unsubscribing is the only solution, I'm not coming back any time soon.

Newbie
  • @razuuuu huh, if having Spotify premium really is the cause of the problem we might get some traction with this...
Visitor

This problem is driving me crazy enough to actually register to post on a forum. 🤦  My Spotify app (MacBook) hasn't updated the recently played artists in weeks (months?) despite re-installing, changing passwords, removing app permissions, etc. My "recently played" still constantly shows some godawful R&B and rock artists who I can't stand, and seemingly ended up on there from me browsing through various stations and playlists out of curiosity. Weird that there isn't a basic function to clear this (like a clear search/history button) - as said many times before, it's frustrating that premium subscribers are having to deal with it.

Visitor

@Spotify -- is there a # of votes required for an issue to be handed off to engineering? We're at 628 now with an angry community. Ary you going to do something about this?

Casual Listener

They clearly don't care about people who are paying. I'm really mad about it. Why don't they just get rid of "Recently Played" on Home page when there's also Recently Played section updaiting without problems?.  Why they're keeping this part of desktop app which isn't working for so many people? And it's first thing we are seeing after opening Spotify.

Visitor

The "recently updated" on my Mac desktop app has not updated on its own for literal months. A roommate played an album through my Spotify account on my Apple TV and THAT showed up, but the items I am listening to on my iPhone and the ACTUAL DESKTOP APP have not updated. This issue has been known, again, for MONTHS. And for the love of god, don't suggest that our apps aren't up to date. This is 2020. You're basically telling us to, "turn it off and back on again."

We are paying for this service. Before you introduce any other shiny new features, ffs, please fix what's already out there.

I've never left a message like this before and to use all caps within? Fix the damn app.

Music Fan

I've had this issue for months and wasn't aware it was ongoing for others as well. Apparently recently I played my Liked Songs playlist/album. Shame I can't give it a custom cover image and have to stare at this gray block of death. 😂

I am also experiencing this problem on my Windows laptop(t540p) and desktop(home built). Recently played screen from the sidebar works properly, but the one on home screen is still showing that one artist I played once like a month ago. Clearing listening history removes all history from recently played screen, but recently played songs and artist persist on home screen. This doesn't seem to be happening on my android phone.

On my laptop I have this spotify version installed from windows store 1.1.43.700.g20acee0f

On my desktop I have a version installed from spotify website.

If there is no solutuion ahead, can we just disable this section?

This issue is almost a year old and it hasn't been resolved yet?

Just removed the section then, seems like don't care to fix it at this point

Newbie

This is one of those things that is like drip torture for some of us. The amount of these little things along these lines that spotify knows about and just lets fly without any focus at all is the reason I'm probably switching over to Tidal. Almost ten years as a user—most of those with a premium account—and the main reason I'm still here is only cause I'm such a creature of habit and don't want to deal with the playlist transfer. I feel like that is spotify's biz model these days, just focus solely on account acquisition and don't pay any attention to retention.

Newbie

This issue has been ongoing for almost a year now. What's the status? Some of us are paying for this service and the level of support is not adequate, in my opinion.

Newbie

This is a small but really annoying issue. The recently played list on my mac hasn't been updated in well over a few months and the fact that this issue is not taken seriously for this LONGG by Spotify team is even more surprising to me. Syncing content across your connected devices is one of your most basic features. I'm providing some additional details as suggested,

  • Make and model of device: MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)
  • Device OS - 10.14.2 (Mojave)
  • Exact Spotify version installed - 1.1.44.538.g8057de92 (This is current version but the issue persisted through few past updates)
  • Any troubleshooting steps you tried - Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app during which I also cleared the application cache in both the system cache and Spotify's persisted cache in library/ApplicationSupport. I also tried the simple work around to access the recently played tab from the left pane, but it didn't work.

Please fix this, Thanks!

Visitor

Issue still havent been resolved.

I use spotify on Windows 10 Pro with the installer from spotify website and spotify app on my andriod phone.

Tried installing and reinstalling multiple times, clearing cookies, cache, deleting all appdata on my PC.

Also uninstalling and removing all user data for spotify on my andriod phone at the same time.

Recently played does update only on my andriod phone.

But does not sync in anyway to windows 10 installer from Spotify website, windows 10 app from Microsoft app store and Spotify web browser.

Newbie

Hi @Katerina  I experience this too.

This issue seems to be related to recently played data not synchronised properly between the different clients (player)  a member can use. And the fact that the Home page on the desktop pulls in the wrong recently played on the Home page. When I use the different players (Desktop, Mobile, or Web (open.spotify.com) they each have their own recently played list, although I am logged on using my Premium account to all.

The list shown on the home page of the desktop client is the one from open.spotify.com, which leads me to believe that the embedded Chromium browser is configured to pull it from open.spotify.com.

This problem can be solved if the developers have all the recently played items merged into a single (online) recently played data (either songs, playlists or whatever I clicked to play) updated by each player, this must be doable as when you play something, all players know where something is being played.

However I do not know if this problem is experienced by a lot users or just by a limited number. FYI, I have been using Spotify for a number of years now and started with the free version, then I made the mistake to login with Facebook and started Premium from there. Then I made the move to cut loose from Facebook (I closed my Facebook account years ago) and had my historic information and playlists transferred to my regular account. Maybe this will help developers to find clues on causes, if only a limited amount of people experience this.

Something broken and providing nothing but a negative user experience, is a "Not Right Now" item, especially with this many votes? There are some items that have like only 10 votes yet those are being looked at.

This happens for me on Windows 10 for both the desktop app and even on the web player. That should suggest this is not even specific to the desktop app. Here's a screenshot of both the desktop app and the web player showing pretty much the same thing.

Great, but what have they found in the past year that this has been an issue and/or what's the plan?

This is getting really annoying now 😠

Start of the year I played some horror sounds from my PC through the PS4 app as a prank for the others in the room but now I can't get rid of the album on my homes recently played and I'm sick of seeing it there every time I open up Spotify. I'm seriously considering deleting my account and starting another one. Instead of being able to clear my listen history like a normal person with sense would think to implement, I must end up deleting my account and starting over

Visitor

Seriously, why is this not fixed yet? It is beyond infuriating. This issue was reported LAST YEAR and it still hasn't been fixed.

Why does this work on my mobile app but it doesn't on the desktop app? And yes, like many others I have the latest version of the desktop app and and re-installed multiple times with no success.

Spotify, why cant your developers simply just update the desktop app's recently played API to consume from the same API that the mobile app uses. It isn't difficult.

Heck, give me developer access rights and I'll fix the issue myself.

Casual Listener

I started noticing this issue (and the fact that my Daily Mixes are not updating anymore) as soon as I started using the Desktop app. Before I only used the Web client and phone app without issues. The introduction of the Desktop app introduced these issues.

I cannot believe that an issue like this is not solved after a year! It's not a particular minor bug. These are essential user experience bugs, taking away the pleasure of using a platform like Spotify. Seamless experience using the same platform over different devices is a number one these days! Please fix

Casual Listener

Almost a year now and no fix... Come on Spotify, seriously?

Visitor

So 9 months on, why has nothing happened? Clearly "the right people" are NOT looking into it! This is pretty useless for a PAID product....

Visitor

The 'Recently Played' list of songs on Home tab is not updated per recent usage, has songs / artists that have not been played in months, and does not seem to influence the current recommendations as well. Per some posts from last year, the list on Home tab does not allow removing music from there, which makes the "feature" absolutely useless and incredibly infuriating. What are you trying to achieve with having these unpopular restrictions with no apparent benefits? Per this chain, this has been an outstanding issue for over a year. What other feature is more important the the first one users see logging into your app? In your response, please do not provide platitudes such as "Spotify is always improving and testing new features", because the highlighted issue belies that argument.

Visitor

Did you fire the "right folks" since the status update, and is that why this issue has not been rectified? If not, they SHOULD be fired, as they are clearly not doing their job. Or is it that you, the moderators, are not doing your job?

Newbie

Please could somebody update us about your progress of fixing this problem? Why are you taking so long with it? Is it too hard to fix?

Hi,

I'm very tired of this, really. That issue upset me more than ever. The recently played is broken since many years, never worked for me.

Spotify never listen to premium clients. I'm starting to think about quit for Apple music, because the same issue take YEARS to be fixed.

I'm attaching a screen shoot of my recently played section on my start page: take a look at the first thumb... is a guy called Khalled! Man, I never in my life have listened to this singer. NEVER!!! I think that I listened the new Napalm death album just once.

I have the same issue, Really frustrating.

+1 here for the same issue on the desktop app... Really sick of the same things being at the top of my home section for months.

Casual Listener

My information:

* MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

* macOS Catalina Version 10.15.7

* Spotify version 1.1.45.621.gdddebadc (there is no update available at time of this posting)

I was watching a movie recently and John Cena's character told Alexa to play BTS in the movie, which kicked off my Alexa nearby. 😬 Now I see that BS on my Recently Played whenever I use Spotify on my computer. I have listened to a lot of music and a variety of playlists on all of my devices since then (including my iPhone 8, in my Subaru Crosstrek but through the iPhone), and the only other item that has shown up in the Recently Played section is my Release Radar playlist.

Regardless of that annoyance (that I clearly blame on John Cena), my point is that it seems like the Alexa may update the Recently Played while other devices may not.

Newbie

Thanks @RileyIsland, you gave me an idea of something to test out 😊

Windows 10
Spotify 1.1.45.621.gdddebadc

In the desktop app, "Home" > "Recently played" only displays music that I've played via the Spotify Web Player (https://open.spotify.com).
The list only updates when I exit the Spotify desktop app and then open it again.

For those of you stuck with annoying albums on your "Home" screen, try using the Web Player - it might help you replace them with something better! 🤞

This is so frustrating. Seeing as this has been an entire year and not resolved

This is why I switched to Tidal. Their recommendations are also **bleep**, but the sound quality is way better.
Shame, I really liked Spotify.

Newbie

This is a terrible user experience. My Recently Played list has been the same for months. Spotify, please find better PM

Newbie

I don’t think it will ever be fixed. Unless they will completely redesign desktop app and remove this section. For me it’s recently played and also shortcuts that are not updating. Also shortcuts in my phone app and online player... I think is the same bug and it’s all connected.
I just quit premium plan because I really think it’ll never be fixed and this bug is really bothering me. It’s not something I would just ignore... Just for your information- creating new accounts, starting fresh - it’s not a solution unfortunately. This happened on all of my accounts.
For now I’m on AM and keep Spotify free. I’m still curious so I’ll be checking on this thread.

Can someone just add a "clear recently played" to the home page please?

That seems like a temporary fix since this issue is taking so long to resolve.

I've paid for Spotify for nearly a decade and this is really disappointing.

Disappointed this STILL hasn't been addressed. For something on the Home page to go this long without a sufficient solution shows how much this company really cares about their members. If anything, disable it!!!

That's my recently played list and have been that way for the last two months, I don't know who the **bleep** are those "artists", never listened to any of them in my life. Have the same issue on all my players (web, android, linux and windows)

This issue is getting very annoying please fix it ASAP!!

Newbie

OK, it looks like for me the recently played section is now gone from Home altogether. (Windows 10). So I would consider that a fix, since Recently Played is still in the sidebar.

Newbie

And I would like to add, that for me the Recently played has been removed when I open the web Browser player (open.spotify.com). So Recently played is only on your desktop or App and they seem synced. Fine by me, solved.

To any Moderators like @Katerina : Can you update this topic?

Newbie

I've noticed that recently played has been removed from the home page and a section on the left works when I click on it.
I don't consider the issue being solved, but this workaround works for me, at least for now.
Might consider purchasing premium again.

Thank you!

Newbie

For me the issue still persist on the windows 10 application, was notified of an update today, updated and then loged out and reloged again, just to be shure, my home page still has the "Recently played" section that never gets updated, but the "Recently Played" list under "Your Library" section on the left menu bar works ok and gets updated when I play a new song, also noticed that whenever a play a song on another player (chrome, android or linux) the Recently Played list on my windows application's home page gets updated correctly. (Nasty workaround, I will be listening music today from chrome just to clean up my windows  app home O.o)

Newbie

I'm confused with this, the Top Answer is from Sept 23rd and says you're still working on it. Then there's a Moderator message from Sept 15th asking for more details if the issue persists? Was this fixed or not?

I guess I'll send the information they asked for, because the issue persists for me:

I still have "recently played" on home screen in desktop app and in web player. Still not updating... So it's not solved for me. I've updated everything recently.

My premium plan finished two days ago and I'm on free - I noticed that  "Shortcuts" completly disappeard for me and it's good because they were not updating for me either.

Newbie

I have been staring at the same "Recently Played" for like half a year on my Mac at this point. Pretty disappointed to say the least

Visitor

Are the developers still actively working on this? I expected this to be fixed months ago to be honest. I'd be fine if they were giving us consistent updates and confirming that they're still looking for a fix (even if they wont have one fore a long time) but right now it looks like they're ignoring this one.

Regular

I wish Spotify would just remove the recently played section from the desktop application if they aren't going to even try fixing this. My account was hacked two weeks ago and my home page still shows the stuff they listened to.

The recently played tab updates fine. Developers, you've had over a year now.

Hi! I have the same problem but it’s in my iPhone8+, the Spotify version I have is 8.5.86.739, I’ve tried everything(restarting the app, login out and login in, reinstalling the app) and nothing seems to work
The problem started when a friend eliminated all my playlists and I had to recuperated them, I’ll really love if somebody help me, Thxs!

Casual Listener

I'm having the same issue. The iOS app and laptop apps aren't updating at all. I chatted with someone today and was told my app was somehow disconnected. The second person I chatted with told me to turn on push notifications which has nothing to do with the app itself. Then she suggested creating another account but I declined since I have Hulu with my premium subscription. Sucks to pay $9.99 a month and I don't know who's released new music.

Casual Listener

No need for screenshots, my devices look just like everyone else who posted, just adding another example.

Premium/paying user (not sure why it says casual listener).

Using windows 10 Pro on an HP Spectre and Android/Nvidia Shield TV.

The desktop version and Android app for Nvidia Shield are not maintained like the mobile app (which is great).

They look and function a lot like they did when Spotify first came out.

Usually I search and listen to Spotify on my phone and find a lot of new stuff or get into old favorites.

It's disappointing when accounts are not synched so activity is not accessible on the device you want.

It's great to have Spotify on the computer. It controls the app on Nvidia Shield TV. But they are basically the same iteration - navigation, look and feel are terrible. The display is old and clunky.

Sure the mobile app will control anything but it's a poor experience when users cannot enjoy the full benefits of a great application on every available version. Making everything work to the same standard seems like a no brainer.

Will this be left to die or are teams activity working on updates?

Music Fan

lol do the devs actually do anything at this company?

Newbie

It works again on my Devices, so I guess they did something...

Newbie
It might be because you listened to lots of different things, maybe? I still see it, tested now on the iPhone app. 😞
Newbie

I have this issue only on my Mac desktop app. Had the same 4 albums/playlists at the top of my homepage on the recently played section for far too long now and I find it especially annoying, because I really dislike one of the albums that it's stuck on,  so now I have to see it every time I open Spotify.

Maybe give us a way to adjust our homepage, so at least I can drag the recently played section down a bit so I don't have to see it.

Please could you try and find the issue asap. I know it's small, but would really improve my Spotify experience!

@Katerina 🙂

Update: It fixed for me for about a day and then it went back to being stuck again. Perhaps they did something? I wish they would announce these things in some sort of monthly patch notes or something.

Look at post from @m_b_80  (2020-11-06 11:59 AM)

In the desktop app, Home - Recently played only displays music that I've played via the Spotify Web Player (https://open.spotify.com).

Casual Listener

In my app on my android phone it updates fine both in the Home Page as well as my profile page.
The only other device I use Spotify is my desktop PC with Windows 10 pro, and this is where the problem persists: in the windows desktop app, the recently played list doesn't update only in the Home Page, but it does update in the Recently Played tab (the one located in the left menu) as well my profile page.
All apps and systems are up to date.

Casual Listener

I can confirm that this issue remains problematic for me as well.

Playing something on ios puts it in the recently played list on the app, however spotify web or the desktop app have the same two month old recently played list.

I've tried various things including signing out everywhere, reinstalling the apps everywhere and such. Given that the problem is also present on the web version, it tells me that it's a server issue more than anything else.

Moreoever, playing something on the web or desktop updates my recently played on ios, but not on the web or desktop interfaces.

Newbie

I don't know about everyone else, but when using Spotify desktop on my mac now, the recently played section on the homepage isn't there anymore.

Which I guess solves the problem because I'm no longer looking at the same couple of albums every day. Now at the top of my homepage, I get my 'made for' section where all the daily mixes are which is a vast improvement. For all those who still have an inaccurate recently played at the top of their homepage, check for an update, because something has happened to fix this.

Newbie

I wish mine would go away. It's been annoying seeing old and incorrect info right at the top of my home screen for months.

user-removed

I've had this issue for the last three months or so on both Windows 10 and Android 7.

Getting kind of sick of perpetual Christmas, Hot Dad and multiple instances of Your Top Songs 2020.

Also makes setting up Spotify alarms on my phone through Google Clock more of a hassle since it pulls from the Home edition of the Recently Played list and to find anything else you have to search for it and if it's a playlist it'll be at the very bottom.

Amazing that this has been a known issue for over a year.

Gig Goer

a clearly documented bug that had persisted for years:

"not right now" -- that special Spotify user support. What exactly are engineers working on?

Visitor

can you useless muppets please just fix this, been about 2 years now and people pay more than 100 a year for your service

Newbie

[Windows 10] Hey I am having this issue too, I reinstalled the app as well and it changed nothing, this issue is 2 years old, how come there isn't an easy fix yet?

Newbie

I am getting this bug now too, I am on Windows 10 and seeing as this has been an issue for 2 years, when is the fix coming. I re-installed Spotify and my PC is up to date but nothing has worked

Newbie

I recently found a possible connection to correlate what may be going on. My recently played section is what my google home speaker has played recently and not the computer. I don't know if this will help but it's worth a shot just posting what I discovered.

Music Fan

So, what's happening is that Spotify is looking into this problem for more than two years now. Really man. Is that the time you guys take for a bug to be fixed!

Gig Goer

it seems that the "recently played" in my user profile updates correctly (for artists). just a thought but you might use this.

Newbie

just wondering, is there really no plan to fix this issue? i mean, taking years to fix a known bug...

Visitor

mine home page doesnt update for months 🙂

Gig Goer

It's 2021 and no fix. Hire a better programmer man.

Newbie

Here's a solution for MacOS users:

You can force your way into the new redesign by adding this line into  your prefs file found in /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Spotify/prefs

ui.experience_override="xpui"

Casual Listener

^ nice that worked, thanks

Visitor

I canceled my Spotify premium a few weeks back. Switched to Deezer.

Deezer isn't necessarily the greatest but at least they're not treating their customers like total flipping jerks.

If anyone else has been bothered by this issue for a number of months and is sick of waiting, just cancel. Companies like Spotify will continue to ignore complaints if people don't cancel their subscriptions when issues don't get fixed within a reasonable timeframe.

Visitor

Glad to see this is being reported. To add more details (or at least I didn't see this reported so far):

Recently Played is no longer of list of literally the last things you played, whether a playlist, an album or a song. Its only a filter option in Your Library. And it only remembers playlists that you have favorited or created yourself. So if you tried something new recently and you didn't favorite it (click the heart), then it doesn't appear in Playlists>Recently Played.

Theres basically no longer a Recently Played section in Your Library. Theres a  Playlist section, which can be filtered by recently played, but theres no section for actual recently played music.

This is either a significant oversight or a terrible decision to remove Recently Played. I use that section more than any other feature of Spotify and it looks like thats true for a lot of people. I hope this is the top priority in on the fix list.

Newbie

I've had this problem for over a year. Even with the redesign, it doesn't work correctly.

Gig Goer

I thought this might be fixed with the re-design but the issue is still there. For me, the issue is on the web player, windows, and mac. Mobile works correctly, please discuss between your teams.

Casual Listener

A message to all the users on this thread, this is an issue from 2017
All the moderators and support team member on this forum telling you "we are aware of this issue and are working on a fix" are lying to you. They aren't working on a fix, the support team is just repeating what the software devs tell them, like parrots.

Your recently played will always be broken and bugged, switch to Tidal or opt to exclusively use the Spotify web player. Some have also reported that the phone app updates the playlist (this hasn't worked for me though), these are the only known and somewhat working fixes for this ongoing issue.

I hope you have a pleasant day knowing Spotify does not care.

Newbie

Same here, since last decade.

Casual Listener

Someone has sent me an a link to a Spotify track back in February. I've listened to the track for about 10 seconds and now it's stuck forever in my Recently Played. The only option to update or clear the section is to abandon the account and create a new one. To add insult to the injury, since the track has got its tenured position in my Recently Played list the app is always recommending it in the "Good Morning/Evening" section on top of the Home page.

Casual Listener

I started getting this with the redesign, it worked flawlessly before (PC Desktop here). It's an embarrassing look for Spotify that it is still not fixed, and I am considering cancelling my subscription as that is a feature I rely heavily on.

Visitor

Getting these issue for a while as well (this, plus a mysterious artist showing up on my home screen for no reason every now and then).

And please stop it with the polite way of saying "it's your device fault". I've tried literally EVERYTHING on my end so no, it's not my iPhone/MacBook pro/windows PC/ Samsung & LG TV's fault. I get it that support was trying to help to the best of their ability. But I'm seriously considering switching to literally anything else apart from Spotify at this point if it means Peter, Paul and Mary could stop showing up on my recently played section day and night without fail (no offence to the artist ofc).

Newbie

Still an issue...

Newbie

I can't believe this issue has existed since 2019. C'mon, it's been almost two years and you haven't fixed it? I don't want to have playlists I haven't listened to and that I don't even follow anymore on my home page. I rely on this feature heavily.

Newbie

This has been a problem for me as well. I came here looking for a solution, and just found that it's been a problem for years. This feels like a simple thing to get right; it should be fixed by now.

Newbie

I guess I'll throw my hat in the ring as well. I'm a new Spotify member of only a month or so, a recent Apple Music convert. The best part is that this is affecting my "Good Morning' and "Good Evening", showing the same albums for both every single day. I wish I could just remove that section as it's basically pointless and slapped right up at the top of the app every time I open it.

Newbie

So after wondering why my Good Morning / Good Afternoon / Good Evening WASNT updating for the past 6 months and looking into this for the past 4hrs today I've finally found this thread!!!

Because my Recently Played isn't getting updated I have the same damn Albums / Playlists / Songs in the front page (Good Morning) becuase I guess Spotify thinks I'm listening to the same **bleep** 24/7

Exactly what @Krudmon above says.

The fact this bug is over 2yrs old is utter sh*t

Newbie

Hello All,

There is another thread happening over here - https://community.spotify.com/t5/Ongoing-Issues/Recently-Played-not-updating/idi-p/5233455

about this issue. It's only a week old and it's already Under Investigate.

Please make sure you are commenting and voting on this NEW thread.

Newbie

Just a heads up, this seems to have been fixed for me in one of the recent desktop client updates. Not sure if it will pop up again (I hope not) or if it's still acting up for anyone else.

Newbie

Finally! Seems to be working OK in version 1.1.66.578.gc54d0f69-a on Windows 🤞

Newbie

I'm using version 1.1.67.586.gbb5ef64e and the issue still exists.

Newbie

iPhone 13 ..just updated my Spotify app and it’s not refreshing my recently played artist. Tried everything from deleting the app and clearing cache and still nothing!

Newbie

Same here. Mi PC version (Windows 10) stopped counting songs. Don't know when this started to happen. The mobile version works perfectly but for some reason that only Spotify knows, my Recently Played section it's not updating and all I am listening has gone in the void.

Newbie

From what I can tell by reading all these comments it's almost like the iOS app, Desktop app, and the web player are not synced together when it comes to your Recently Played tab. I have issues on the web player and my MacBook Air Retina 13 inch, 2018 and running on macOS Monterey 12.1. I've cleared caches and done a clean install of the app (so we know the drivers are up to date unless Spotify for some reason isn't putting the correct version on their own website). Spotify for macOS (Intel) 1.1.74.631.g0b24d9ad, this is my current version directly from the Desktop app. If this was a device issue this wouldn't be an issue for so many people on a variety of different devices. There's something in the software that is not letting these three (and likely more) platforms talk together when it needs to update the Recently Played tab. Kinda just guessing but that's what it appears to me from working on other pieces of software.

Newbie

Any updates on this issue???

Been fighting it for a while, Recently Played doesn't update in its entirety, the Mac app only has a small portion of the recently played items compared to iPhone and iPad apps.

user-removed
The 6 playlist under my “good morning” are not updating. I’ve tried to log in and out, I’ve uninstalled the app, and I’ve tried to clear my storage but nothing has worked.
Visitor

Any updates on this? Still having the issue and given the way Spotify appears on the Rivian interface, this is really frustrating!

Thanks

Newbie

This was originally submitted in 2017. I think it's safe to say that Spotify does not plan to fix it because they do not care.

As evidence, they marked a duplicate ticket for this same issue "Status changed to: Not Right Now" in 2021. It might as well say "Never" at this point.

Visitor

I just asked Spotify support about this an they completely blew me off. I will be switching music providers immediately. The great thing is, now I get to listen to high fidelity music. Spotify is a joke now. Just about as bad as Netflix.

Newbie

This has started happening to me too. It's really frustrating. Recently played doesn't update if I play on anything other than my roommate's smart TV or my PS4. Not my phone, not my PC. It NEVER gets rid of podcasts, even though I haven't listened to any in MONTHS and only use the app for music 99% of the time. So infuriating and feels just outright embarrassing if I let someone else see my homepage. They need to fix this ASAP or I'm switching to Youtube Music.

Newbie

ongoing

Regular

Still happening on Windows desktop app.

Web does not even have recently played songs section.

Casual Listener

several times Recently Played has been removed from my home screen.

This will force me to cancel my subcription and find some competent application instead

Newbie

Yesterday, when I was listening on the Spotify app on Android 6.0, the recently played queue wouldn't update whenever the song has been played instead of it updating hours later. Is there any tips to keep queue of playlists or queue on recently played working again?
