We’re excited to highlight a recent research study that showcases a unique application of BeamNG.tech: understanding how humans perceive safety and realism in autonomous-driving simulations. Researchers immersed 50 participants in both BeamNG.tech and CARLA using VR headsets to evaluate how people feel about the safety of simulated self-driving behaviors, especially when traditional metrics classify a test as “passing.” 🔍 Key Takeaways Metrics don’t tell the full story. A car can stay in-lane (OOB pass) yet still feel unsafe e.g., approaching obstacles too quickly. Complexity changes perception. Obstacles and challenging environments strongly influence perceived safety. Immersion matters. VR offers a deeper, more nuanced sense of realism. Interaction builds trust. Allowing users to adjust speed increased their perceived safety. 🎯 Why This Matters This study shows how BeamNG.tech supports research far beyond traditional simulation tasks enabling deeper exploration of human-in-the-loop evaluation, reality-gap analysis, and perception-driven safety metrics. BeamNG GmbH is focused on the continuing development of its state-of-the-art soft-body physics engine capable of real-time simulation of vehicle dynamics and damage on consumer hardware. Our engine was first released in 2013 and is now widely available for entertainment and professional industrial simulation purposes. Used in our best known product, our vehicle game BeamNG.drive, the BeamNG physics engine also has a track record of successfully being integrated into several academic and commercial research and design programs. We also provide a free version of BeamNG.tech for non-commercial research use. This has been central to several academic research studies leading to published papers. We continue to push the envelope of what is possible in the simulation space while regularly releasing updates for BeamNG.drive. Our technology is adaptable and versatile so it can be applied to a variety of use-cases, as evidenced by our industrial co-operations where it has been used in driver behavior research, vehicle interior simulation, autonomous vehicle training and other machine learning initiatives. Our long-term goals include expanding the scope of our commercial co-operations with international partners while also continuing to support our game BeamNG.drive as it comes out of Early Access. BeamNG GmbH's workforce is diverse and international. Our team works either from our office in Bremen, Germany or remotely from locations ranging from west-coast Canada to the gold coast of Australia. We place great value on fostering a sense of community among our workforce. Be it at industry conferences, training opportunities or just spending a couple of weeks working from our office in Bremen, we believe that a productive remote team stems from the positive relationships forged in having met face-to-face.
