The Inyo County Elections department is currently recruiting election workers for upcoming elections. Election workers are a critical part of the election process. This is a great opportunity to serve your community and earn extra money in the process.

Requirements – Who can be a poll worker?
- Registered California voters.
- Legal permanent residents that meet all voter eligibility requirements.
- Eligible high school students that enroll through our Student Worker Program.
- Must be available to work on Election Day, from 6:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. or until all of the closing procedures have been completed.
- Must attend at least one training class.
Stipend
Election workers are paid a stipend for volunteering. The stipend is set by the Inyo County Board of Supervisors.
Our stipend rates have been updated!! New fees were approved by the Board on 05/21/2024, and are in effect for the November 2024 Election.

Training classes and Position Descriptions
Thank you for volunteering to help your community vote!
- Training for each position is mandatory.
- Mileage is paid to any election worker that commutes more than 15 miles to their assigned location, including training classes. Volunteers will receive information about training classes with their letters of appointment.

Details on each position:
Election Day Technician
What do they do?
Technicians work at a Polling Place on Election Day to support voters, provide accessible voting,
and to keep elections secure.
They:
- Are in charge of their assigned ADA ICX Equipment.
- Uphold the voting procedures as set in place by the Registrar of Voters for election security and integrity.
- Support the Rights of the Voters.
- Support/Assist fellow technicians assigned to other locations, over the phone.
- Are responsible for ballot security and the privacy of ballots and voter information
When do they work?
Election Day from 6am to around 9pm; with many breaks throughout the day.
Where is the work performed?
At an assigned Polling Place in Inyo County.
How many are recruited?
One Technician is scheduled at each Polling Place on Election Day.
When are they trained?
Within 30 days before Election Day, the Elections Office will hold training for Technicians at the Independence Elections Office.
What is the flat stipend Pay per day?
$230 for Election Day
$ 80 for Training Day
Election Day Inspector
What do they do?
Inspectors work at a Polling Place on Election Day to support voters and to keep elections secure.
They:
- Are in charge of their assigned Precinct Table and/or Roster Table.
- Uphold the voting procedures as set in place by the Registrar of Voters for election security and integrity.
- Support the Rights of the Voters.
- Support/Assist their assigned Clerks, Student Workers, and all other Election Worker staff on site. (This is a team job!)
- Are responsible for ballot security and the privacy of ballots and voter information
When do they work?
Election Day from 6am to around 9pm; with many breaks throughout the day.
Where is the work performed?
At an assigned Polling Place (voting location) in Inyo County.
How many are recruited?
One Inspector is scheduled per each Consolidated District at each Polling Place on Election Day.
When are they trained?
Within 20 days before Election Day, The Elections Office will hold trainings for Inspectors and Clerks. One class will be held in Bishop and another in Lone Pine.
What is the flat stipend Pay per day?
$220 for Election Day
$ 50 for Training Day
Election Day Clerk, Student Poll Worker, Part-time Clerk/Worker
What do they do?
Clerks work at a Polling Place on Election Day to support voters and to keep elections secure. They:
- Follow instruction of their assigned Inspector, and may be asked to provide coverage to other precinct tables.
- Uphold the voting procedures as set in place by the Registrar of Voters for election security and integrity.
- Support the Rights of the Voters.
- Support/Assist their co-election workers (This is a team job!)
- Are responsible for ballot security and the privacy of ballots and voter information
When do they work?
Election Day from 6am to around 9pm; with many breaks throughout the day. Part-time Clerks will be scheduled for six hours, at a scheduled time based on need.
Where is the work performed?
At an assigned Polling Place (voting location) in Inyo County.
How many are recruited?
Three Clerk/Workers per Inspector, two to four per Roster Table per location, and one to four per voting location for Greeters and coverage.
When are they trained?
Within 20 days before Election Day, The Elections Office will hold trainings for Inspectors and Clerks. One class will be held in Bishop and another in Lone Pine.
What is the flat stipend Pay per day?
$180 for Election Day
$100 for Part-time Clerk/Worker
$ 50 for Training Day
Election Night Worker
What do they do?
Election Workers assist with checking in goods, equipment, and ballots from Collectors. The process includes instructions for Downstairs Intake and Upstairs Intake. Goods, equipment, and ballots are checked in as received. Ballots are sorted and secured for scanning and locked storage.
When do they work?
Election Night from 7pm until completed. (estimated to end between midnight -2am)
Where is the work performed?
At the Elections Office in Independence
How many are recruited?
Three to four Workers for downstairs intake, and three to four Workers for upstairs intake.
When are they trained?
On site same day of work – immediately proceeding the work performed.
What is the flat stipend Pay per day?
$80 for Election Night
Election Ballot Collector
What do they do?
Goods, equipment, and ballots are collected from all Polling Places on Election Night, and mailed ballots from Official Ballot Drop Boxes. All items and ballots collected are imediately transported to the Elections Office in Independence.
When do they work?
Election Night from 8pm until completed. Tecopa and Death Valley Collectors work for several days starting 29 days before Election Day, to the day after.
Where is the work performed?
At location of assigned Official Drop Box or Election Night Polling Place.
How many are recruited?
Two collectors per Official Drop Box and/or Polling Place on Election Night, plus additional four collectors for regular collections of Tecopa and Death Valley Official Drop Boxes (two each).
When are they trained?
Forms, keys, and instructions are provided before collections begin.
What is the flat stipend Pay per day?
$50 per day
Election Board Worker – Mailed Ballot Board
What do they do?
Mailed Ballot Boards work in groups of four people to:
- Validate the physical count of mailed ballots (sealed in their envelopes) matches the count of ballots checked in to the system during signature verification.
- Open ballot envelopes and remove the ballots from the envelop in a process that secures the voters’ ballots to remain secret.
- Validate the physical count of the unshelled ballots reconciles with the prior count of checked in envelopes.
- Completes Chain of Custody forms confirming the counts of envelopes and the ballots are accurate.
- Securely lock and store ballots.
During their process, they:
- Uphold the voting procedures as set in place by the Registrar of Voters for election security and integrity.
- Supports the Rights of the Voters.
- Is responsible for ballot security and the privacy of ballots and voter information
When do they work?
The Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before Election Day, and one team continue on the Thursday and Friday after Election Day; 9am to 4pm each day
Where is the work performed?
At the Elections Office in Independence
How many are recruited?
Three to four teams of four Workers per team
When are they trained?
On site same day of work – immediately proceeding the work performed.
What is the flat stipend Pay per day?
$120 per day
Election Board Worker – Scanning Board
What do they do?
The Scanning Board:
- Validates the physical count of ballots received to scan matches the count on the Chain of Custody forms confirmed by the Mailed Ballot Board.
- Run the ballots through the tabulator units, and record the tabulator information onto Chain of Custody forms and Tabulation forms.
- Securely lock and store ballots
- Completes Chain of Custody forms confirming the counts of envelopes and then the ballots.
- Adjudicates ballots flagged by the system to ensure all votes are counted.
- Upholds the voting procedures as set in place by the Registrar of Voters for election security and integrity.
When do they work?
The Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before Election Day, and on the Thursday after Election Day, and additional weekdays thereafter until all ballots are scanned; 9am to 4pm each day. They also work on Election Night from 7pm until completed (estimated 12am-2am)

At the Elections Office in Independence
How many are recruited?
One team of four Workers
When are they trained?
Within 30 days before Election Day, the Elections Office will hold training for the Scanning Board at the Independence Elections Office. Training is performed laterally with the PreLAT – Logic & Accuracy Testing
What is the flat stipend Pay per day?
$120 per day
Election Board Worker – Audit Board
What do they do?
The Audit Board:
- Hand tallies all ballots in a randomly selected consolidated precinct and compares their results to the tabulated election results report to confirm the accuracy of the official results.
- Hand tallies additional ballots to ensure at least one precinct for every contest in the election is included in the audit.
- May be asked to hand tally additional precincts at the request of the Registrar of Voters.
- Securely lock and store ballots
- Upholds the voting procedures as set in place by the Registrar of Voters for election security and integrity.
When do they work?
The selected day to start the audit varies per election. Audit is performed from 9am to 4pm each day until completed. Estimated from two to four days.

How many are recruited?
Three to four teams of four Workers per team
When are they trained?
On site same day of work – immediately proceeding the work performed.
