  • Small and medium-sized companies are the core of the global economy, making up 90% of businesses. On LinkedIn, there are more than 18 million businesses with under 200 employees – and the figures are rising. In the year to July, there was a 60% rise globally in the number of people launching their own businesses on LinkedIn, with above-average increases in the UK, Netherlands, Spain and Germany. Economic uncertainty is likely a factor in this, as people seek to control their own career path or go it alone in the face of a tougher jobs market. However, the rise of generative AI is also enabling people to set up their own business: more than 60% of small business leaders globally say starting and running a business is easier because of AI. In some ways, AI lowers the barriers to entry. "Any question you might have about building a business – where might I get funding? What do I need to set up? – you can ask AI," says Sarah Porretta, CEO of Young Enterprise, a global charity providing access and inspiration for the next generation of entrepreneurs. AI can also prove a source of inspiration for many aspects of a business, from coming up with names and logos to building a marketing plan. LinkedIn research suggests 85% of small businesses already use AI in some form, and four in 10 professionals globally say it has made them more likely to start their own businesses. People are also upskilling, with AI-related skills on the rise across Europe. In France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and UK, AI engineering is among the top three fastest-growing skills among those working at small businesses. In the UK and the Netherlands, AI literacy is the fastest-growing skill. Improving understanding and access to tools could help broaden opportunity. "Entrepreneurship can be a vehicle for social mobility, but access is often restricted to those with resources," says Porretta. "An AI pitch practice tool, for instance, is just one way people can build confidence and overcome one barrier." Have you ever considered starting your own business? Which entrepreneurs do you find most inspiring? Share your take in the comments.

  • 📮 𝘓𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘴, 𝘐 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘥. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘥𝘢𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺. Denmark is removing post boxes and will discontinue its letter collection service after 400 years at the end of the year. It is the first European country to stop delivering letters, writes The Economist, but unlikely to be the last. There's almost no demand for postal services in Denmark anymore, with the volume of letters sent dropping 90% over the past 25 years. Last year alone, 30% fewer letters were posted compared to the year before. That's why PostNord, owned by the Swedish and Danish governments, will stop delivering letters from 2026. Danes will still be able to send and receive letters through privately-owned company dao. Denmark is no exception. In many countries letters have become an anachronism in the age of email, text messages and social media, though letters do still play a vital role in less digital societies. E-commerce, on the other hand, has skyrocketed. The number of packages delivered worldwide is expected to grow from 161bn in 2022 to 256bn by 2027, and the postal services that have reinvented themselves as parcel delivery companies are thriving. The decline of the handwritten word means that the bright red post boxes – a staple of many a streetscape – may soon only be viewed in museums. ✍ Pieter Cranenbroek Sources: The Economist https://lnkd.in/eqNceVAJ The Copenhagen Post https://lnkd.in/gR_Q5cqZ

  • ✨ "When you don’t know exactly what you want to do, you're open to opportunities that arise." ✨ Claire Isnard now holds an executive role at CHANEL, but she didn't have a straightforward career path. In fact, her journey began with what she calls a "big failure". After coming up short on a crucial teaching exam in France, she found herself at a crossroads. But that failure opened unexpected doors. From consulting, to leading transformation projects at Chanel, to becoming the global chief people and organisation officer at the iconic fashion brand, Claire credits her success to staying open to new opportunities and surrounding herself with inspiring people who believed in her. Her advice? Be curious, trust others and focus on what truly matters to you: “I wanted a career that was about people, transmission, looking forward and having a meaningful impact." 💬 What experience changed the course of your career? Watch Claire’s interview and add your story or insight below to join the conversation.  ⬇️ 🎞️ & ✍🏾 Solange Uwimana
