You can hide or delete a conversation between you and another person in Google Chat and Chat in Gmail.
- Hide a 1:1 direct message
- Removes your copy of a conversation, but doesn't remove the conversation for other participants.
- If you hide a conversation with someone and then message them again, your chat history shows up if it’s turned on.
- Delete a 1:1 direct message
- Permanently deletes your conversation history, but doesn't delete the message from the history of other participants.
- When you delete a direct message, it deletes the content, but a record of the message instance remains in the backend.
You can also choose to edit or delete a specific message. If you edit or delete a sent message, it updates the message for you and other participants in the conversation.
Hide a 1:1 direct message
Important: You can’t hide a group direct message with more than 2 participants.
- On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
- In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
- Hover over the person's name.
- Click More
