Hide or delete a 1:1 direct message

You can hide or delete a conversation between you and another person in Google Chat and Chat in Gmail.

  • Hide a 1:1 direct message
    • Removes your copy of a conversation, but doesn't remove the conversation for other participants.
    • If you hide a conversation with someone and then message them again, your chat history shows up if it’s turned on.
  • Delete a 1:1 direct message
    • Permanently deletes your conversation history, but doesn't delete the message from the history of other participants.
    • When you delete a direct message, it deletes the content, but a record of the message instance remains in the backend.

You can also choose to edit or delete a specific message. If you edit or delete a sent message, it updates the message for you and other participants in the conversation.

Hide a 1:1 direct message

Important: You can’t hide a group direct message with more than 2 participants.

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. Hover over the person's name.
  3. Click More and then Hide conversation .

Delete a 1:1 direct message

Important: You can’t delete a group direct message with more than 2 participants.

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. Hover over the person's name.
  3. Click More and then Delete conversation .
  4. To confirm, click Delete.
