Use Assignments LTI™ with PowerSchool Schoology Learning

Google Assignments and PowerSchool Schoology Learning expanded Google Docs Editors and Google Drive to be compatible with PowerSchool Schoology Learning for file submissions. With Assignments, you can distribute and grade student work, analyze student submissions for plagiarism detection, and use Google Docs and Drive with PowerSchool Schoology Learning.

Features & benefits of Assignments

When admins enable Google Assignments in PowerSchool Schoology Learning settings, you can use its features and benefits.

As an instructor, you can use Google Assignments as an external tool to create a new assignment and to:

  • Grade in Google's grading interface or in PowerSchool Schoology Learning.
  • File attachments to an assignment so each student gets their own copy to edit and submit.
  • Find missed citation checks and possible plagiarism with the originality reports feature.

Assignments also provides improvements from Google Apps LTI™:

  • Officially supported by Google and covered by the Google Workspace for Education Terms of Service.
  • Provides an option for admins to require students to use their school issued Google Accounts.
  • Uses Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI™) 1.3 for stronger security.
Use Assignments as an external tool for assignments
  1. On your browser, sign in to PowerSchool Schoology Learning.
  2. Open the course.
  3. In the "Materials" section, click Add Materials and then Add Assignment.
    • A "Create Assignment" pop-up window shows.
  4. In the pop-up, fill out the assignment fields:
    • Name
    • Description
    • Due date
    • Category
    • Period
  5. In the "Format Options," click Google Assignments.
    • If you’re signed in to your Google Workspace for Education account: Click Continue.
    • If you’re not signed in: Sign in with your Google Workspace account.
    • If you’re signed in to multiple accounts:
      1. Click Switch account.
      2. Sign in with your Google Workspace for Education account.
    • If this is your first time to use Assignments in this course: Link your LMS account to your Google Account. Learn how to link your account to Assignments.
  6. In "Create a Google assignment," you can:
  7. Click Create and then Create.
    • After you create it, the PowerSchool Schoology Learning assignment shows in your list of course materials.
Add Drive files as PowerSchool Schoology Learning resources

You can download Drive files as PowerSchool Schoology Learning resources.

  1. Open the course.
  2. Under “Materials," click Add Materials and then Import from Resources.
  3. Click Apps.
  4. Select the resource app you want to use.
  5. Sign in with your Google Account.
  6. Click Select file. A popup window to insert files with Google Drive opens.
  7. Select the file you want to attach as a PowerSchool Schoology Learning resource.
  8. Click Attach. This file is added to your materials.

If my organization uses PowerSchool Schoology Learning apps for Google integrations, should we also use Assignments?

Google Assignments has all the functionality as the PowerSchool Schoology Learning apps and includes:

  • Improved security
  • Flexibility
  • Integrations

Current PowerSchool Schoology Learning apps for Google users won’t lose access but should transition over to Google Assignments LTI™ 1.3.

In addition, all new features will only launch to Google Assignments. To use the latest Assignments features, you can install and migrate to Google Assignments LTI™ 1.3.

Does my organization need Google Workspace for Education to use Assignments?
Yes. To use Assignments, your organization needs Google Workspace for Education, which includes an edition for educational institutions that’s available at no charge. Sign up for Google Workspace for Education.
Can I embed a form from Google Forms or Forms quiz?

No. Currently, you can’t embed a form or select one as a file type for quizzes. To use Forms for quizzes, create a form and share the link with your students. Learn how to create a Google Form.
