GCC to re-issue tenders for waste management

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation cancelled a tender floated on Nov 28 for privatizing solid waste management at Tondiarpet and Anna Nagar (zones 4 and 8) after officials identified gaps in the bids submitted by participating firms. Residents, however, urged GCC to proceed with outsourcing waste management, citing inadequate services provided by the existing sanitary workers.While scrutinizing documents, officials found discrepancies and shortcomings in mandatory requirement such as technical proposals, financial statements, company premises, equipment availability, and workforce strength. "Since the private companies have failed to meet the criteria related to road sweeping, stormwater drain desilting, collection and transportation of garbage, maintenance of burial grounds, and other waste management-related services, they were found unsuitable for performing the civic duties," said a senior GCC official. GCC scrapped the tender process and said a fresh tender will be floated soon.Residents say there is no regular door-to-door garbage collection and that waste dumped in bins and on the roads remains uncleared for several days. "We welcome the initiative to outsource waste management as workers under private operators would work in shifts. But they must make sure that waste transfer points are cleared and maintained," said R Boopalan of Seniyamman Koil Street SCB residents' welfare association, Tondiarpet.
