  • "Tell me about a time you failed" is not a trap. It is a test of self awareness. For infrastructure and security roles, mistakes happen. What hiring managers want to understand is how you respond and what you learn. A simple way to answer this question is to use a short STAR style structure: Situation and task. Set the scene for the project or incident. Action. Be honest about what you did or did not do that contributed to the problem. Result and reflection. Explain what happened next, what you would do differently now, and how that has changed your approach. Avoid stories that blame everyone else.   • "Walk me through your experience" is not an invitation to read your CV back to the interviewer. The goal is to connect the dots for them. For technical roles, a good answer is usually structured around projects rather than job titles: Pick two or three roles or projects that are closest to what this company needs, for example a data platform migration, a network redesign, or a cyber incident response. For each one, briefly explain the context, what you owned, and what changed because of your work. Tie it back to the role you are interviewing for, by highlighting the patterns in the problems you have solved.
