We're looking forward to starting our Innovate UK-funded Knowledge Transfer Partnership with the University of Birmingham tomorrow, which aims to develop recycled carbon fibre based GDLs for fuel cells and electrolysers over the next 2 years. Marwah Shnaiter will be joining the Gen 2 Carbon team to lead this project, which will build on an earlier proof-of-concept project that showed the potential to deliver industry leading performance from these products. With the market for alkaline and PEM based hydrogen energy systems forecast to grow from $1.1B in 2023 to $30.6B in 2030, it feels like the right time to be focussing our R&D efforts in this area. #gen2carbon, #universityofbirmingham, #greenhydrogen, #carbonfibrerecycling, #recycledcarbonfibre, #fuelcells, #electrolysers

Gen 2 Carbon and Americarb Partner on Recycled Carbon Fibre for Clean Energy Gen 2 Carbon (UK) and Americarb (US) have announced a partnership to develop recycled carbon fibre (rCF) materials for clean energy technologies. The collaboration combines Gen 2 Carbon’s expertise in recycling carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) waste with Americarb’s strengths in impregnation, curing, and heat treatment. Together, they will turn end-of-life composites into high-value products for batteries, fuel cells, electrolysers, and structural energy storage. Recycled carbon fibre offers cost savings of 20–30% compared to virgin fibre, a carbon footprint up to 95% lower, and improved supply chain security by tapping into abundant domestic waste streams. Applications range from electrodes and gas diffusion layers to bipolar plates and multifunctional composites. By lowering the cost and environmental impact of critical energy technologies, the partnership supports green hydrogen, clean transport, and the broader transition to a circular, net zero economy. #gen2carbon, #americarb, #recycledcarbonfibre, #recycledcarbonfiber, #hydrogeneconomy, #cleanenergy, #batteries, #fuelcells, #electrolysers, #circulareconomy, #sustainability, #structuralpower

This week brings an end to our summer engineering internship. Flora has done a fantastic job over the last couple of months, establishing our laboratory paper making lab for recycled carbon fibre papers and looking into how we can optimise these for electrochemical applications. The plan to scale this up and carry out comprehensive testing over the next 12 months is already in place, so exciting times ahead. #recycledcarbonfibre, #gen2carbon, #electrolysers, #fuelcells, #electrodes, #sustainability, #cleanenergy, #womeninengineering

We're delighted to have been nominated for the Engineering Innovator of the Year in the sustainability category of the prestigious Innovation Awards. Backed by Make UK, NatWest, Innovate UK, the West Midlands Combined Authority, the Connected Places Catapult, Warwick Manufacturing Group, BCU, and others, the Innovation Awards recognise, celebrate, and reward the businesses, organisations, and individuals dedicated to innovation. You can find out more about past winners and a highlights video of the ceremony at https://lnkd.in/ee9uAEja. Our nomination recognises the outstanding work Gen 2 Carbon has done to create circular carbon fibre solutions and develop products that are critical to the clean energy transition. The public vote is open through the website (https://lnkd.in/ee9uAEja) from midday on Wednesday 9th July and closes at 6 pm on Friday 25th July, and we hope that all of our supporters will vote for us. #IA2025, #gen2carbon, #recycledcarbonfibre, #recycledcarbonfiber, #circulareconomy, #cleanenergy

We're happy to share that having completed the independent LCA of our chopped and nonwoven recycled carbon fibre products, the data are now available to our customers through the Product Information Sheet that we're releasing today. If you're interested in a copy, please email technical@gen2carbon.com with your contact details and a brief description of how you'll use the data. #gen2carbon, #carbonfibrerecycling, #carbonfiberrecycling, #sustainablecomposites, #rcf, #LCA, #circulareconomy

Another milestone achieved in Gen 2 Carbon's journey. This week we placed the order for the full scale carbon fibre recovery furnace that will be installed in our UK factory early next year. This will give us the capacity to process at least 1,600 tonnes of CFRP waste in 2026, yielding around 1,000 tonnes of high quality carbon fibre that we can convert into materials for our wind energy, automotive and aerospace customers. #gen2carbon, #carbonfibrerecycling, #sustainability, #circulareconomy, #sustainablecomposites, #resourceefficiency

We've just received the independent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) report for our second-generation process to recover carbon fibre from CFRP waste and our processes to turn those fibres into products that can be used for composite manufacturing. Lots of data to trawl through, but the summary is that the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of our fibre recovery process is between 0.9kgCO2e/kg and 1.2kgCO2e/kg, whilst our recycled carbon fibre nonwovens have a GWP between 0.9kgCO2e/kg and 2.0kgCO2e/kg. Savings of 75% compared to our first generation system, helping customers looking for the weight saving carbon fibre can provide whilst managing their environmental impact. Even better, we can recycle these materials again...and again! #gen2carbon, #carbonfibrerecycling, #LCA, #sustainability
