Democratic Maine Rep. Jared Golden won't run for reelection in 2026
WASHINGTON (TNND) — Maine Democratic Rep. Jared Golden announced Wednesday that he would not be running for reelection in 2026.
“After much deliberation, I’ve decided not to seek reelection in 2026,” he wrote on the social media platform, X. “I’m confident that were I to run again, I would win. But recent events have made me reconsider whether the good I can do in Congress still outweighs the cost to my family.”
He said he was proud of his accomplishments but is looking forward to spending time with his family and friends.
“To the people of Maine's 2nd District: Thank you. Representing you has been the honor of my life,” his post concluded.
Golden served in the Maine House of Representatives before becoming a congressman in 2019.
In a more lengthy statement, Golden said that the political violence from both sides has made him look at things differently.
He also said he and his family have gotten threats.
“Last year we saw attempts against Donald Trump’s life, and more recently we witnessed the firebombing of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s home, the assassination of Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota and the horrific murder of Charlie Kirk,” he said.
“These have made me reconsider the experiences of my own family, including all of us sitting in a hotel room on Thanksgiving last year after yet another threat against our home. There have been enough of those over the years to demand my attention.”
He said the torch should be passed to someone else.
“Our world is rapidly changing, and the torch should be passed to those with the greatest stake in the future — my generation and those who follow,” Golden said.
