Austal Vietnam was proud to host representatives from the Australian Embassy in Vietnam and Journey Beyond for the official plate cutting ceremony of Hull 431 in Vung Tau, on 1st December. Following a traditional blessing and a symbolic offering of incense for good luck, Australian Ambassador, Her Excellency Gillian Bird PSM pushed the button on the CNC machine to start cutting the very first piece of aluminium on the new 35-metre catamaran for Cruise Whitsundays; designed by Incat Crowther and constructed by Austal Vietnam. The Austal Vietnam #team were pleased to welcome: • Mr Barry O'Meara, General Manager Marine & Aviation Assets, Journey Beyond (parent company of Cruise Whitsundays) • Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Her Excellency Gillian Bird PSM • Australia’s Consul-General in Ho Chi Minh City, Ms Sarah Hooper, and • Consul (Economics), Australian Consulate General, Ho Chi Minh City, Mr Kayzad Namdarian Following the ceremony, guests toured Austal Vietnam’s world-class shipbuilding facilities, including a look at ‘Dory 2’ (Austal Hull 426), under construction for The Degage Group of French Polynesia, and now preparing for launch. Cruise Whitsunday's new 35-metre aluminium catamaran, scheduled for delivery in December 2026, will have a capacity for 390 passengers and 10 crew - and operate scheduled resort connections from Airlie Beach, to both Daydream and Hamilton Islands in the Whitsundays, off the Central Queensland coast of Australia. #Austal #AustalVietnam #CruiseWhitsundays #JourneyBeyond #IncatCrowther #AustralianEmbassyVietnam #Catamaran #Ferry #PlateCutting

DeltaPearl Partners’ latest report reinforces what those of us in the Australian shipbuilding and defence industry have long understood: procurement choices matter—not just for capability, but for Australia’s long-term strategic resilience. The analysis shows that shifting even a small portion of Defence spending—5% of imports and 10% of domestic Defence expenditure—towards genuinely sovereign primes could unlock up to $8.2 billion in annual GDP and create more than 43,000 highly skilled Australian jobs. All without increasing the Defence budget. For companies like Austal, this is exactly why sovereign capability cannot be an afterthought. When work is delivered in Australia, it keeps IP, skills, tax revenue, decision-making and critical industrial capacity here—where they’re needed in times of strategic uncertainty. The report’s recommendations, strongly backed by the Sovereign Australian Prime Alliance (SAPA) group, offer a practical path forward: • Redefine “value for money” to recognise national benefit • Embed a Sovereign Dividend Scorecard • Strengthen the definition of an Australian business • Equip procurement teams to understand the true value of sovereign capability As a proud Australian Prime, and member of the SAPA group, Austal welcomes this conversation. Building, sustaining and exporting Australian capability isn’t just good policy—it strengthens the nation from within. Building Ships, Changing Lives in our Community At Austal, we’re proud to be a global leader in shipbuilding and a trusted defence industry partner. But our commitment doesn’t stop at our shipyards—we’re equally dedicated to supporting our local communities. Here in Western Australia, for over 10 years, our #team and Austal Giving sponsorships have helped advance vital research through The Hospital Research Foundation Group—from cardiovascular disease and diabetes to prostate cancer. Most recently, we’ve supported Dr Aaron Beasley at Edith Cowan University, whose work is improving treatment options for late-stage melanoma. As our GM Operations (and Austal Giving Chairman), Mathew Preedy, said: “We can see the impact that (our support) is going to make for future generations, so that’s why we really encourage our employees to get involved; and Austal is proactive in supporting organisations such as the Hospital Research Foundation.” We’re proud to support research that’s changing lives in our community. 💙 📺 Watch the video below to find out more about Dr Beasley’s work and our partnership with The Hospital Research Foundation Group. For more than 10 years, Austal staff and annual project sponsorships have supported The Hospital Research Foundation Group’s research in WA, from cardiovascular disease and diabetes to prostate cancer and now Edith Cowan University’s Dr Aaron Beasley, whose work is helping improve treatment options for late-stage melanoma. As GM Operations Mathew Preedy shares: “A highlight for us is that this research is happening right here in WA, and that we can meet the doctors and researchers face-to-face to hear directly about their work.” We’re incredibly grateful for Austal’s long-standing partnership and their commitment to advancing life-changing research. We were honoured to welcome the Chief of the Australian Defence Force, Admiral David Johnston AC RAN, Mr Greg Moriarty AO, Secretary of Defence Australia and Air Marshal Rob Chipman AO CSC, Vice Chief of the Australian Defence Force to Austal’s Henderson shipyard this week. A special highlight of the visit was a reunion between two former shipmates: Admiral Johnston (who was Commanding Officer of HMAS Adelaide FFG01 in 1997) and Austal’s own Jamie Fearn-Wannan — a proud RAN veteran who now applies his skills as a Piping and Mechanical Tradesman on our vessels for the Royal Australian Navy. Great to see old mates re-connect, and to showcase the work our #team is doing to support Australia’s future fleet and sovereign capability. #Austal #Defence #DefenceIndustry #AustralianDefenceForce #AusNavy #shipmates
