Medical respite care is proving to be a game-changer for unhoused Californians—delivering $1.81 in value for every dollar invested while providing a critical bridge between hospital discharge and stable recovery. As a key CalAIM Community Support service, Recuperative Care programs are reducing emergency department visits, preventing costly readmissions, and improving health outcomes for our most vulnerable neighbors. Could a short-term stay improve outcomes for Californians experiencing homelessness? Recent findings show that short-term medical respite care for people without stable housing can be both cost-effective and beneficial for recovery. For every $1 invested in medical respite, the programs delivered a $1.81 return — and helped one Orange County program save $17 million for its managed care plan in 18 months. These programs bridge the gap between hospital discharge and recovery, reducing emergency department use and readmissions. Excellent case study on braiding CalAIM with Homekey and other funding streams for permanent supportive housing. RH Community Builders navigated 6+ funding sources to create 143 units of PSH in California's Central Valley, a region where homelessness doubled between 2014-2024. As a DHCS-approved CalAIM technical assistance vendor, we see firsthand how critical it is to understand these funding complexities. Between 2014 and 2024, the number of people experiencing homelessness in California’s #CentralValley doubled. Excited to share the 3rd (in our series of 3) Terner Center for Housing Innovation, UC Berkeley case study which describes how one organization - RH Community Builders (RHCB) - has leveraged #CalAIM to build local capacity to help people in the Central Valley become and remain housed. Since 2019, RHCB has quickly grown to provide a comprehensive portfolio of #housing and #services that spans shelters, recuperative care, community-based teams, and permanent supportive housing developments. RHCB’s model offers strategic insights for other organizations and highlights the importance of continuing to invest in housing and health care supports to dramatically decrease #homelessness in California.
