Everyone was talking about Stablecoins at #Money20/20… now I saw this news by @Kathleen Greenler Sexton on @Subscription Insider that @Stripe announced support for Stablecoin subscription payments — but only for U.S. merchants. 🔗https://lnkd.in/eGmRbEfY Here’s why this news left me scratching my head… The true benefit of Stablecoins is solving issues related to currency conversion, speed, and cost in hard-to-reach markets. But in the U.S., credit card payments settle in seconds — so what problem is this solving? If Stripe’s saying merchants get paid faster, that’s not about Stablecoins — it’s about when they choose to release funds. This feels more like adding PayPal or Venmo: more ways to pay, sure, but no real savings in time or cost (unless fees drop below card rates). For a subscription business, this could even increase involuntary churn. Solutions like @Butter Payments help optimize card retries, but if all that’s left are empty stablecoin wallets, churn will grow for these companies and cost millions in revenue. Stablecoins have tremendous value globally, but for U.S. subscription businesses? I’m not seeing it yet. They are correlated with lower customer quality and higher fraud exposure.
