Our client, AFRICAN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SOLUTIONS (AEDS), has received a Retail Real Estate Network Minnesota (RENET) 2025 STARR Award in the Development Process category for Little Africa Plaza. It's a shining example of a transformative, adaptive reuse project in St. Paul’s Hamline-Midway neighborhood, led by AEDS and designed by Cushing Terrell in collaboration with Kimley-Horn. The project revitalizes a historic 1926 Art Deco building along Snelling Avenue and preserves its original red brick façade and ornate architectural details, while creating a vibrant new hub for African culture, commerce, and community. Our team was honored to provide full service engineering and design solutions on this project and we extend the very happiest of congratulations to our wonderful partners, including Flannery Construction and Lisa Kugler Consulting, on Little Africa Plaza. Gene Gelgelu, President and CEO of AEDS, said "This [project] symbolizes how the city and state are supportive of economic development within the community. It highlights the city; it highlights the state. And making this as the center of cultural entrepreneurship will have a positive impact on the region." About us
Cushing Terrell was founded in 1938 by architects Ralph Cushing and Everett Terrell. Ralph and Everett acted on the belief that integrating architecture, engineering, and design opened the doors for deepened relationships and enhanced creativity: that belief was the beginning of our design practice and still defines us today. Driven by empathy, our multidisciplinary teams work together to design systems and spaces that help people live their best lives, achieve their visions, and enjoy healthy, sustainable built environments. Each year, we complete projects translating into $1 billion in construction costs. These projects include schools, hospitals and clinics; single- and multi-family residences; and recreational, commercial, retail, and industrial developments. Our services include architecture; mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, and environmental engineering; planning; landscape architecture; interior design; and many more. Hailing from 17 offices in seven states, our comprehensive approach and staff of 450+ professionals spanning 30 disciplines and seven markets enable Cushing Terrell to offer clients unrivaled partnerships, service, and value. With our passion to develop imaginative solutions and forever improve, this is where design meets you.

Yesterday was the Montana Heritage Center ribbon cutting ceremony and today marks the official public opening! The state-of-the-art, 165,000-square-foot facility houses the state’s historic collections, serving as a place for learning and discovery, with visitors expected from across the country and worldwide. The center captures the stories of the diverse people and groups who've contributed to the history of Montana. Two decades in the making, the center features deeply immersive exhibits of Montana's history across generations and time periods, art galleries, outdoor habitats, and representation of Montana's Native Nations throughout. Our team was thrilled to attend the ceremony alongside Montana Historical Society leadership and staff, project partners, donors, Tribal partners, state leaders, and the City of Helena, Montana community. Congratulations to Montana Historical Society and the State of Montana Department of Administration on the culmination of their extraordinary efforts. And a huge thank you to our partners Sletten Construction Company, Jennifer James (James Consulting), Major R., RLMG, Electrosonic, Available Light, Big Sky Acoustics, Mainstreet Design, Cinnabar, and Swope Exhibits. We're honored to have worked on this monumental, world-class cultural facility. The Montana Heritage Center is now open to the public, seven days a week. Stay tuned for the grand opening celebration in June 2026 for a three-day extravaganza that will showcase everything the center has to offer, at the peak of the season. 🦬 Home of Montana’s Museum 🤠 On December 3, the Montana Heritage Center officially opens its doors to the public with free admission. This milestone, led by the Montana Historical Society, marks the culmination of a 20-year vision and $107 million in public and private investment. Cushing Terrell is proud to have provided full architecture and engineering services for this once-in-a-generation project, including an extensive scope of museum-quality infrastructure. The design draws inspiration from Montana’s vast and varied landscapes. According to Design Principal, David Koel, when we asked, “What connects all Montanans?” the answer was clear: the land itself. For Montana’s museum, that connection is expressed through built form. The result is a building that is a sculptural metaphor for Montana—a place where the stories of Montana's landscapes and communities come together under one roof. 🦃 Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃 Cushing Terrell Billings office continued one of our favorite traditions this morning—donating Thanksgiving boxes to families at Newman Elementary. Newman has been our Billings Public Schools Partner in Education for nearly 30 years, and supporting their students is something we look forward to every season. This year we assembled a record 40 Thanksgiving boxes (Thank you Albertsons!). Each box includes a turkey with all the trimmings—vegetables, milk, eggs, rolls, and of course a pumpkin pie with whipped cream. We’re grateful for the big staff turnout in our plot room and to our shopping, pickup load and unload champions: Nicholas Bowers, Sean Tharp, and Hollie Mellgren. #CushingTerrell #PartnersinEducation #BillingsPublicSchools #Thankful #BillingsMontana #CommunityImpact

New in our portfolio: A shift in shopper sentiment prioritizing meal planning, convenience, and fresh, seasonal offerings has prompted grocers to respond with unique features that give customers another reason to make the trip. Town & Country Markets in Poulsbo, Washington, exemplifies this change. The renovated location is more than a market: It’s a collection of experiences. The new approach is a natural progression for the regional grocer, which has always positioned itself as a community hub and source for inspiration. The major additions in support of the client’s goal include an outdoor patio area, classroom/community kitchen, and test kitchen, as well as the project’s banner component: Field House restaurant embedded inside — yet distinct from — the market. While Cushing Terrell has supported many projects for Town & Country Markets over the years, this was their first restaurant collaboration. The process was successfully realized in partnership with renowned chef Ethan Stowell whose team guided the restaurant flow, equipment selection, and back-of-house operations. A big thank you to our project partners Mallet Design Build and Woodman Construction, Inc. Data centers — both the great potential they bring and their challenges — are a hot topic. And while the rapid rise of AI has ensured the general populace is familiar with the concept of data centers, they’re not a new facet of the built environment. Our multidisciplinary, cross-market teams have decades of experience supporting a variety of clients with data center projects, bringing together multiple perspectives to realize smarter, more holistic projects. We spoke to Shawn Pelowitz, a director for our government team, James Foster, a director for our commercial team, and Alan Bronec, a director for our infrastructure team, to learn about the different types of data centers they design, what they see as the biggest challenges to overcome as it relates to their development, the solutions they’re working with clients to implement, and their thoughts on how they see technology and design solutions evolving.
