Fighting for a food system that centers communities, workers & the environment — NOT corporations.

About us

FarmSTAND fights back against the corporations that dominate all aspects of our food system — exploiting animals and the environment, as well as workers and consumers, especially people of color. We work in courtrooms and communities to transform the food system while holding corporations and government leaders accountable. Our network of attorneys and legal partners has filed dozens of cases across every movement sector and area of law, securing important victories. By winning cases, partnering with communities, and holding corporations accountable, we can create a food system that works for people and the planet. If you’re ready to fight for a better future, join us: https://mailchi.mp/0596a87dcf2b/fight-for-a-fair-food-system

  • The seeds of a fair food system are already here. Earlier this year, a farmer-owned slaughterhouse co-op opened in Tennessee for the first time in fifty years. Instead of having to pay transportation costs and wait over a year to have their meat processed out of state, farmers can have meat processed and ready to be sold in as little as two weeks, and they share in the plant's profits. This is the kind of system that puts control of food back in the hands of growers, workers, and communities, not corporations. • Together, JBS and Tyson control nearly half of the US beef market. In the last month, both settled cases challenging their climate commitments. A new settlement in New York is forcing JBS to amend or take down its unproven climate claims, as well as to pay $1.1M towards developing sustainable agriculture. This parallels our recent settlement with Tyson, which forced an end to their net zero claims and promotion of "climate smart" beef. Litigation is a powerful tool for taking action on climate by standing up to polluting corporations. We're proud to have changed how meat companies represent their climate impacts. • The MAHA agenda is clashing with Big Food corporations and their endless pursuit of profits. Earlier this month, The New York Times detailed a new effort by corporations to make it harder to regulate food, which is causing tension between MAHA activists outside of government and the pro-corporate, anti-regulation Trump administration. We predicted this conflict earlier this year, when the first MAHA report was released. Despite their claims to be prioritizing public health, MAHA-aligned politicians have minimized the impact of corporate control over the food we eat and given lobbyists influence over their recommendations. • Big Ag polluter JBS has been dominating talks at COP30 to position itself as a leader on climate solutions. In reality, JBS' methane emissions are higher than those of Shell and ExxonMobil combined. This is classic greenwashing, which JBS just settled over in NY court. Greenwashing is when companies use marketing to appear more climate friendly than they are, instead of investing in real solutions to the climate crisis. We just reached a settlement with Tyson over the same issue. Thanks to our legal work, Tyson has agreed to a settlement requiring it to stop making claims about reaching net zero emissions or its supposedly "climate smart" beef. It is vital that we stand up to companies who try to hide the reality of their climate impacts behind clever PR. Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/exMVN4wh

  • The Trump administration put millions of dollars of USDA grant funding on the chopping block with a basic keyword search. FarmSTAND, Earthjustice, and Farmers Justice Center obtained documents from the USDA showing that they decided which programs to cut based on if their projects contained a handful of newly banned words. On the list were terms like “diversity,” “equity,” and “environmental justice” — things that MAGA can’t stand but are crucial for creating a just, sustainable food system. This careless, broad-brush approach just goes to show how little the Trump administration is interested in actually improving our food system. Their racist anti-DEI campaign is only capable of tearing things down, not building them up. • An image depicting an AI chatbot window. The chatbot is labeled DOGEGPT. Headline: This is how much care the Trump administration put into canceling USDA grants. The conversation in the chat window: USDA: DOGEGPT, can you find me all USDA grant programs related to diversity, equity, inclusion, or environmental justice? Bot: Okay. I found over 145 results for grants related to conservation, land access, public green spaces, and other topics. Would you like more details? USDA: No. Cancel them all. Bot: Even the school lunch programs?
    • Headline: This is how much care the Trump Administration put into canceling USDA grants. Image: A representation of a Command Prompt window. In it, there is code to access a database called USDA grant recipients, and code to delete the words climate, diversity, equity, climate resiliency, and conservation. The computer asks: Are you sure you want to delete school lunch programs and farmer financing?
  • When companies put maximizing profits over the health and dignity of their employees, they force workers to deny themselves bathroom breaks in order to meet company quotas. That results in workers having to pee in bottles or wear diapers just to do their jobs. We're representing Leah Cross, a former delivery driver, in her suit against Amazon over this policy. Getting a fair outcome in this case will help secure protections for workers in other industries, especially slaughterhouse workers, who are particularly vulnerable to exploitation. Cross argues that the no bathroom breaks policy is particularly discriminatory to, or disparately impacting, people with typical female anatomy. Trump's EEOC betrayed workers by stopping investigation into cases like hers, so we're suing to get the EEOC to do its job of defending workers. • FarmSTAND branded quote graphic. Quote: If meat can't be produced without both human and animal blood on the floors, or packaged can't be dropped without urine dripping down the legs of the driver, then we need to replace the systems that make that the norm. Attributed to David Muraskin, FarmSTAND Managing Director of Litigation. Image: Slaughterhouse workers on the line.
  • Today represents a turning point in the fight to protect consumers from Big Ag’s climate greenwashing. We and our allies just reached a settlement on behalf of Environmental Working Group with Tyson Foods in which it agreed to stop making climate claims we alleged were misleading. Tyson controls a fifth of the country’s beef, pork, and chicken, and has been estimated to produce nearly as much methane pollution as major oil companies. Big Ag's climate impact has gone under the radar for too long, and we're proud to be taking action. Today’s settlement sends a message to other industrial ag emissions giants that we're looking out for consumers.
