⚠️Earth just hit a number we can’t ignore⚠️ In 2024, global CO₂ levels soared to 423.9 ppm — the fastest jump in decades. Human emissions, wildfires, and weakening oceans and forests are fueling a climate emergency. Methane and nitrous oxide are also at record highs. 🔥Forests are turning from carbon sinks into carbon sources. Oceans are too warm to absorb CO₂. Arctic warming is disrupting weather, sparking extreme heatwaves, droughts, floods, and wildfires worldwide. This isn’t just a record — it’s a warning. Immediate action is needed: protect forests, restore ecosystems, phase out fossil fuels, and strengthen global climate cooperation. The planet won’t wait. Neither can we. We've joined the Global Commons Alliance! We're banding together with like-minded organisations to help safeguard and restore Earth's life-support systems, equitably. With members across the philanthropic , civil, business and science worlds, we'll be embedded in a rich network for knowledge sharing and to maximise our impact in the culture sphere. Lucy Stone, Founder and Executive Director, Climate Spring, said: "Culture is the missing key to systems change. The stories we tell reflect how we understand the climate and nature crisis, our place in the global commons and what we believe is possible. At Climate Spring we empower creators across film, TV and popular culture, to help us unlock the imagination and the agency needed to build a better future for all.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ewFkiiRW #ClimateAction #ClimateStories #ClimateNarratvies #NarrativeChange #artsandentertainment #GlobalCommonsAlliance

🌍 Resilience for a changing planet 🌎 Albert Norström, science director at the Commission, was speaking about the Resilience Science Must-Knows report when he was quoted in Forbes on what resilience really means: “Resilience is often misunderstood as simply returning to the status quo after a shock. But in today’s world, the status quo is often part of the problem." He added: “Leaders can no longer plan for stability alone; they must plan for uncertainty. That means investing in systems that can cope, adapt, and transform, and not just withstand shocks but evolve through them.” 🌱 At the Earth Commission, this is at the heart of our work. Many of the systems we rely on today - energy, food, water, and others - are driving planetary risks. Resilience isn’t about returning to old ways; it’s about adapting, transforming, and building systems that thrive under change, helping societies and ecosystems navigate uncertainty and flourish.

  • It's #WorldSoilDay! 🌱 Healthy land and soil is one of the #GlobalCommons underpinning our planet’s life support systems. Learn why soil is so important and what the Alliance is doing to protect it. Soil supports the well-being of all life on Earth because it: 🐝 is home to over 25% of our planet's biodiversity 🥗 provides over 95% of our food, and 🌊 is the second largest active store of carbon after the Ocean. The Planetary Health Alliance recognizes soil health as fundamental to planetary health and human health. Yet around 40% of our land is degraded by climate change and human activity, which is directly impacting 3.2 billion people. As Earth Commission's #SafeAndJust science shows, excess nutrients from fertiliser overuse is also driving pollution in soils. [Read the science here: https://lnkd.in/gBwiayn8] Members of the Alliance are actively working to protect soil: 🌱 Future Earth is involved in research and projects promoting #SoilHealth and is a strategic partner and contributor to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), supporting global soil biodiversity assessments through collaboration with The Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative (GSBI) and other partners.  🌾 Nature and Climate Impact Team works on soil-based climate solutions as part of its work on #FoodSystems which is rethinking production and consumption. 🎯 Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) includes soil health and land degradation neutrality in its #ScienceBasedTargets #forNature framework. Its 'Landscape Engagement' target addresses issues including #SoilPollution. Companies setting this target will collaborate with local partners to improve ecological and social indicators. This World Soil Day 2025 is focused on urban landscapes with the theme "Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities." We join the UN in inviting everyone — from policymakers to citizens — to build greener cities, and preserve soil health everywhere, as part of work across all Earth system domains in order to build a just world, on a safe planet. For everyone. Learn more about the Alliance and how you can be part of it: https://lnkd.in/d5cBZEs
