This malware can then steal sensitive information such as bank credentials, passwords, and photos. To stay safe, consider using a wall outlet with your own charger and adapter, or charge a portable power bank from the public port and then use it to charge your device. If you must use a public USB port, select the "charge only" option and use a USB data blocker to prevent data transfer. Risks associated with public charging: - Juice jacking: Malware installation through public USB ports. - Data theft: Stealing personal information like bank credentials and passwords. - Monitoring software: Installing software to monitor your activity or gain remote control of your device. The Department of Labor (DOL) has indeed launched a major H-1B enforcement initiative called "Project Firewall," which includes initiating over 175 investigations into potential #abuses of the H-1B visa program. This initiative, announced in September 2025, aims to protect American workers' jobs, #wages, and opportunities by ensuring employers comply with all H-1B #regulations. Key Details of Project Firewall and the Investigations Proactive Investigations: A significant change from past practices, the Secretary of Labor can now personally certify and initiate #investigations without waiting for formal complaints, based on "reasonable cause". This allows for broader, more proactive enforcement than traditional complaint-driven reviews. Scope of Investigations: The current investigations target issues such as: Failure to pay H-1B workers the wages specified in the Labor Condition Application (#LCA). "Benching," where H-1B holders are not paid while in-between projects. Inaccurate job descriptions or non-existent work sites listed on official filings. Employers failing to notify U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) when an H-1B worker is terminated. Interagency Coordination: The DOL is coordinating closely with other federal agencies, including the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and USCIS, to share information and strengthen enforcement efforts. Penalties for Violations: Employers found in violation face serious consequences, which may include payment of back wages owed to affected workers, civil money penalties, and debarment from using the H-1B program in the future. Focus Areas: The investigations may focus more closely on H-1B-dependent employers and those using third-party placement or contracting models. The DOL's goal is to ensure that highly skilled jobs go to qualified Americans first and that the H-1B program is used only when necessary to fill specialized talent gaps. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (#USCIS) has announced a policy change effective December 5, 2025, to reduce the maximum validity period for initial and renewal work permits (Employment Authorization Documents, or #EADs) for several noncitizen categories from five years to 18 months. Key Details of the Policy Change Affected Categories: The 18-month validity limit applies to #refugees, #asylees, and noncitizens with pending applications for asylum or adjustment of status, among others. These individuals previously could receive EADs valid for up to five years under a policy instituted in September 2023. Reason for Change: USCIS cited national #security concerns and the need for more frequent background checks to detect #fraud and #security #threats as the reasons for the reduction. Effective Date: The new validity period applies to any EAD application that is pending or filed on or after December 5, 2025. Practical Implications: This change requires affected individuals to apply for EAD renewals more often, which may lead to an increased risk of employment gaps if processing times remain long. Applicants are advised to file their #renewals up to 180 days before their current EAD expires. Additional Changes In separate but related changes this year, a new law (H.R. 1) has limited EAD validity for certain parolees and Temporary Protected Status (#TPS) holders to one year or the duration of their authorized status, whichever is shorter. #Important - H-1B H-4 (and all other visas) from the State Department Announcement of Expanded Screening and Vetting for H-1B and Dependent H-4 Visa Applicants As of December 15, the Department will expand the requirement that an online presence review be conducted for all H-1B applicants and their dependents, in addition to the students and exchange visitors already subject to this review. To facilitate this vetting, all applicants for H-1B and their dependents (H-4), F, M, and J nonimmigrant visas are instructed to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media profiles to “public.” The State Department uses all available information in visa screening and vetting to identify visa applicants who are inadmissible to the United States, including those who pose a threat to U.S. national security or public safety. We conduct thorough vetting of all visa applicants, including online presence review of all student and exchange visitor applicants in the F, M, and J nonimmigrant classifications. Every visa adjudication is a national security decision. The United States must be vigilant during the visa issuance process to ensure that those applying for admission into the United States do not intend to harm Americans and our national interests, and that all applicants credibly establish their eligibility for the visa sought, including that they intend to engage in activities consistent with the terms for their admission.
