Over the past three years, Gates Foundation supported a cohort of behavioral science projects focused on improving foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN). The cohort of organisations, ARED ideas42 Busara TaRL Africa VVOB Youth Impact Central Square Foundation Centre for Social and Behaviour Change Funda Wande, came together to reflect honestly on what we learnt, what worked and what didn't. A few themes stood out: -Teachers are motivated, but face real systemic and behavioral barriers. -Mid-level actors shape what sticks, not just teachers. -Deep diagnosis matters, but only when timelines allow for iteration and co-design. -Embedding, not adding on, is key to sustained practice. -Behavioral science adds value, but it is not a silver bullet for structural challenges. The cohort members Sharon Schroen Stefaan Vande Walle Mamadou Amadou Ly Akashi K. Morgan Kabeer Varsha Ashok Mamadou Amadou Ly Sihle-isipho Bikitsha and I wrote a short synthesis of our collective lessons and recommendations for future behavioral science work in education. Would love to hear reflections from others working in FLN and/or behavior change. Izzy Boggild-Jones Ahmad Jawad Asghar Carolina Better Katherine Flaschen Zainab Amjad Faraz Haqqi
