Week 4 of the Women’s Health Mini-MBA pulled back the curtain on how women’s health companies actually survive, scale, and sustain impact. We dug into the financial forces shaping the industry: - Why runway dictates strategy - How valuations from the 2020–2023 “heyday” are catching up with founders now - Why today’s tougher market requires real traction, longer diligence cycles, and a clearer path to profitability. We also unpacked how investors think: the ownership stakes they target, the pressure to return the entire fund, and how those expectations shape which products get built, which markets get prioritized, and which companies make it to the next round. On the business model side, we explored why many women’s health companies can’t rely on a single model. Whether it’s B2C, B2B, B2B2C, or employer-sponsored care, each model solves a different piece of the puzzle — especially in a system where the user, payer, and beneficiary are often three different people. The takeaway? If we want to change outcomes for women, we have to understand the economics, incentives, and strategic decisions behind the companies building that future. #InWomensHealth #MiniMBA Alice Kim Ariella Tal Ashley Cassens Brittany Ryan Dheera Ananthakrishnan Heather Pitorak, MPH Holly Lauridsen, PhD Joya Kapoor Kamini Menon Kerry A. If you are trying to find a Thanksgiving topic that feels fresh, interesting, and completely safe for the whole table, here is a surprisingly great one: the economics of women’s health. This week in the Women’s Health Mini MBA, we focused on the financial forces that shape care. We talked about how maternity care is often reimbursed at rates that do not cover the true cost of delivery, how employers usually act as the real customer in our system, and why providers pay close attention to payer mix and the Medical Loss Ratio. One example stood out: - In Alabama, Medicaid reimburses maternity care at about $1,800 even though hospitals spend more than $5,600 delivering that care, causing maternity wards to close, and forcing families to drive 60–90 minutes to receive care. We also looked at the financial backbone of women’s health companies. We discussed what it takes to secure funding, why runway matters, and how closing the women’s health gap represents a one trillion dollar economic opportunity if care is valued correctly. Jodi reminded us that these topics should become dinner table conversation. Not heavy. Not controversial. Just thoughtful and human. The kind of conversation that helps people understand how the system around them actually works. So if you need an easy Thanksgiving conversation starter, try this: “Did you know it often costs hospitals more to deliver a baby than they get paid?” It is interesting. It is accessible. And it opens the door to understanding something that affects so many families. This is the moment to bring women’s health to the table. #InWomensHealth #WomensHealthMBA #WomenInHealthcare #MaternalHealth #HealthEquity #HealthcareFinance #FemTech Alice Kim Ariella Tal Ashley Cassens Brittany Ryan Dheera Ananthakrishnan Onyemaechi Anoruo, MD MPH MS Heather Pitorak, MPH Holly Lauridsen, PhD Kamini Menon Kerry A.
