#TechTipTuesday: Seeing smudges or distorted images on your cans? That’s ink smearing, often caused by issues during the varnishing process. Try this: ✔ Inspect mandrels and clean dried varnish from bearings ✔ Check for varnish overflow on steel rolls and reduce supply if needed ✔ Reset bottom roll to maintain scraper contact on uneven ends ✔ Reduce gravure-to-applicator roller pressure ✔ Replace swollen varnish composition roll ✔ Replace pre-spin ring and/or drive belt ✔ Clean or replace the pre-spin belt Need a deeper dive or more troubleshooting help? #TechTipTuesday: Seeing a dull, chalky surface that rubs off easily? That’s chalking– when ink pigment fails to bind to the substrate. Some jobs can be saved by applying an aqueous coating or overprint varnish. Try this: ✔ Check ink formula and batch ticket for drier levels. Add more drier or increase binding varnish as needed ✔ Test substrate pH. If acidic, increase drier and binding varnish or consider a different substrate ✔ Reformulate ink or weaken at press with approved extenders or tint base ✔ Adjust fountain solution pH, keeping it above 3.5, or add drier/binding varnish ✔ Use inks with heavier body or add high solids varnishes at press to reduce penetration Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g_j8S2rQ INX: Where Color Meets Consciousness
