About us

As one of the oldest public libraries in the country, Lancaster Public Library has earned the reputation of a dynamic center of knowledge and a cornerstone of a thriving Lancaster community. The library has a rich history in Lancaster County: the Lancaster Library Company was formed and in 1759, and over the next 260+ years, library service evolved in Lancaster County. Today, the Lancaster Public Library consists of the main library in Lancaster City with a branch in Mountville. These sites provide direct library service to approximately 40 percent of Lancaster County's population in fourteen municipalities. We are proud to serve as the heart of the Lancaster community, and we are committed to providing equitable access to vital educational resources, exceptional programming, and community building opportunities for all at both of our locations.
