For our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, Iovino Enterprises, LLC. and our family of companies organized a successful donation drive, collecting and delivering canned goods, pasta, rice, cereals, and other non-perishable food items to support The Nicholas Center, an organization that supports individuals with Autism to learn critical life skills, improve social and communication abilities, gain vocational training & jobs, and engage in meaningful community projects. Today marks the 13th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, which devastated entire neighborhoods, killing 44 New Yorkers and causing approximately $19 billion in damage citywide. DDC is working to prepare and protect NYC from the next big storm. We continue to make significant progress on the East Side Coastal Resiliency project as well as the Brooklyn Bridge-Montgomery Coastal Resilience project. Together, they will protect 3.22 miles of Lower East Side coastline and more than 150,000 residents. The projects will also protect billions of dollars’ worth of infrastructure and property in the area. Earlier this year, we broke ground on the Red Hook Coastal Resiliency project, which is aimed to reduce flood risks due to coastal storm surge and sea level rise along Red Hook’s waterfront. RHCR will commission a series of floodwalls, floodgates, street redesigns, and other infrastructure enhancements to build a continuous line of long-term resiliency features in the neighborhood, creating a two-mile integrated coastal defense system stretching across Atlantic Basin and Beard Street, two of the neighborhood’s most flood-prone areas. On Staten Island, we’re working with our partners on projects that improve street drainage and reduce flooding through upgraded infrastructure or through enhancing the Bluebelt system. DDC builds other resilient infrastructure all over the city, including rain gardens and storm sewers, and we’ll be on the front lines of future cloudburst projects that protect specific communities from high intensity rainstorms.
