Uniting all Americans to ensure wildlife thrive in a rapidly changing world.
About us
As America's largest non-profit conservation organization, the National Wildlife Federation works closely with those who span the social and political spectrum, but who are connected by a common commitment to conservation. Our ability to meet the needs of wildlife is inextricably linked to the over 6 million amazing individuals, groups, organizations and corporations we call our supporters. Our mission is to unite all Americans to ensure wildlife thrive in a rapidly changing world. Through conservation efforts, grassroots actions, education programs, and award-winning publications (including National Wildlife, Ranger Rick, and Ranger Rick Jr.) we connect with people across the nation to safeguard America’s wildlife and wild places.

Brown bears weigh upward of 700 pounds (315 kilograms), even as omnivores. The most commonly eaten kinds of plants are fleshy roots, fruits, berries, grasses, and forbs. If they are on the hunt, their prey can include fish (especially salmon), rodents like ground squirrels, carrion, and hoofed animals like moose, elk, caribou, and deer. Brown bears can run pretty fast, reaching speeds of up to 35 miles per hour for very short sprints. #funfacts #bears #wildlife #nature

Saving the Sagebrush Biome America’s wide-open sagebrush range stretches across 13 states and 382,000 square miles. It’s the largest contiguous open space in the Lower 48 and one of the most intact ecosystems on Earth, on par with the Amazon or the Serengeti. Despite years of measures to protect this habitat, however, the sagebrush biome is disappearing fast. Scientists say it's time to flip the script to conserve what's left of the shrinking sagebrush biome. Want to learn more? When the only Thanksgiving leftovers are cranberry sauce... In the seven years Maria Barroso has been photographing wildlife, she’s always had one “dream picture” in mind: a cheetah staring down the camera after a kill. On her fifth trip to Africa in as many years, Barroso finally had her chance. “We were on the Jeep; we saw some wildebeests hanging back; and there were three cheetahs there,” says Barroso. “I turned to my friend and said, ‘I think I’m going to get my picture.’ Then the kill happened right in front of us. One of the cheetahs was eating. Then she looked at me, and oh my God. I got my picture.” 🥇: People’s Choice Award Winner 📸: Maria Barroso 2024 National Wildlife Photo Contest: Honorable Mentions & People’s Choice 📲: https://ow.ly/RG3j50XAWOX #photography #nature #wildlife #cheetah #contest

National Wildlife Federation and Allied World have strengthened their long-standing partnership to emphasize the critical role of nature-based solutions in mitigating disaster risk. As part of this expanded collaboration, Allied World has pledged to support a coastal dune restoration project in Coney Island, Brooklyn, through the 2027 planting season. This expanded partnership strengthens the commitment between the two organizations to elevate awareness and support for nature-based solutions that not only reduce disaster risk but also provide other benefits such as wildlife habitat preservation, improved water quality, and enhanced recreational spaces. For the underserved communities already facing environmental burdens near brownfields and Superfund sites, AI data center development can mean new air and noise impacts, more truck traffic, and real questions about whether local water and wastewater systems can handle the load.
