There’s a lead response crisis weighing on dealers: Today on the CDG Industry Spotlight, host Sam D'Arc sits down with Parker Boice, General Sales Manager at Firmage Group’s BMW Utah and Nathaniel Hancock, Chief Sales Officer at Podium. together, they discuss how to compete in a market dominated by mega-dealers, what AI can actually do in a dealership today, and much more. Top lessons learned from Parker and Than: 1. Handling modern lead volume with a reimagined BDC. – Firmage Group has three locations: BMW of Murray (50-year-old flagship store), BMW of Pleasant Grove (smaller store), and Mini of Murray. – The group centralized BDC operations into one 5-person team that services all locations. – Pleasant Grove keeps one BDC agent on-site for customers who come in-person. 2. The way customers shop has completely changed. – Post-COVID, everyone thought customers would do everything online and never visit stores, but that didn't happen. – About 50% of leads now come from online sources, while phone and walk-in make up the other 50%. – And only 25% of customers are visiting the dealership as their first touchpoint. 3. Parker tried outsourcing and tried having salespeople handle leads, but both failed. – Outsourced chat and lead response teams couldn't deliver responses that felt personal enough for a BMW customer. – Having salespeople do it didn't work either because they're busy with showroom traffic and can't respond to leads instantly. – Parker's POV: Dealers can’t out-staff the lead problem. 3. Parker deployed an AI agent to handle the volume humans couldn't keep up with. – The AI responds to text messages, website leads, Google messages, and Facebook messages using their actual inventory and processes. – Parker says his team talks about it like it's a real person - it has a personality, learns from feedback, and gets smarter over time. – A voice version that can handle phone calls launches in November, which Than says is way harder to nail than text because people hate robotic phone experiences. 4. Stop buying five different AI tools and train one system instead. – In the auto industry, many dealers run multiple AI solutions all doing slightly different things. – But four different AI tools means training four separate systems. – Find one partner that can handle all the necessary channels.
