📢 Scientific evidence continues to strengthen the connection between sleep health and cardiovascular outcomes - a theme that took centre stage during the European Business Summits #EHS2025 panel on December 3, “Sleep as a Vital Sign: The Cardiovascular Imperative.” Resmed’s Vice President of Health Research Dr. Kimberly Sterling joined leading cardiovascular experts and EU policymakers to highlight why sleep health needs a stronger place in Europe’s cardiovascular health strategies. She discussed new evidence showing that sleep disorders — particularly obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) — are under-recognized drivers of cardiovascular disease. She highlighted that 40- 80% of cardiology patients may suffer from undiagnosed OSA — with even greater underdiagnosis among women — and called for EU policy to adopt appropriate guidelines and embed routine sleep screening into cardiovascular risk pathways to support earlier and more equitable detection: “Sleep disorders are modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. Screening and treating them is one of the most actionable ways Europe can reduce cardiovascular disease today.” A warm thank you to fellow panellists Prof. Gianfranco Parati, Dr. Christoph Schöbel, and Tomislav Sokol for an insightful, forward-looking discussion — and to moderator Dr. Sarah-Taïssir Bencharif, MD for guiding the conversation with expertise and clarity. 👉 Want to explore the full discussion? This week in Brussels reinforced a clear message: sleep health must be part of Europe’s cardiovascular strategy. At #EHS2025, I joined a panel discussion on why addressing conditions like obstructive sleep apnoea are central to preventing heart disease. In conversations with EU health policymakers, we highlighted why sleep disorders should be included in the EU Cardiovascular Health Plan. Key points we shared:  🎯 Up to 40–80% of cardiology patients may have sleep apnea, which may be undiagnosed .  🎯 Untreated sleep apnoea increases the risk of hypertension, heart attack and stroke.   🎯 A 2025 Lancet Respiratory Medicine meta-analysis shows CPAP therapy cuts all-cause mortality by 37%.  🎯 Women remain underdiagnosed, delaying care. As the EU finalizes its Plan, this is a pivotal moment. How can we work together to make sleep screening routine in cardiovascular risk prevention and improve outcomes for both patients and healthcare systems? #EHS2025 #SleepHealth #EUCardiovascularHealthPlan #EUHealth #Prevention #Resmed

#DGSM2025 #Schlafmedizin #Innovation #DigitalHealth

I’m looking forward to participating in the European Health Summit panel on Sleep as a Vital Sign: The Cardiovascular Imperative. Sleep disorders remain one of the most underestimated risks to heart health. With millions living with disrupted sleep, the need to treat sleep as a true vital sign has never been clearer. Together with Christoph Schöbel ,Prof Gianfranco Parati , Tomislav Sokol and Sarah-Taïssir Bencharif, MD we will explore how poor sleep accelerates cardiovascular disease, the important role of early detection and digital solution, and why now is the right moment to integrate sleep into Europe’s cardiovascular agenda. Through our health research at Resmed , we’re working to deepen understanding of how sleep affects long-term outcomes for people and healthcare systems – and to bring evidence that can support stronger prevention strategies across Europe. 🇪🇺 Back in Brussels — where past memories meet future possibilities. As a teenager, I spent quite a bit of time in Brussels, and it remains one of my favorite cities. Visiting again yesterday brought back fond memories — and offered a glimpse into the future of healthcare in Europe. We met with members of the European Commission and joined a roundtable hosted by DIGITALEUROPE, featuring European Health Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi. Our discussions focused on three themes shaping the future of digital health across Europe: 💡 Harmonization – accelerating consistent implementation of new health and AI guidelines across member states ⚙️ Simplification – creating integrated, coherent regulatory pathways, especially for AI in healthcare 🚀 Incentivization – strengthening Europe’s competitiveness by scaling AI adoption, enabling data interoperability, and upskilling the workforce Sleep health also played an important role in the dialogue. Sleep disorders remain an overlooked part of the EU’s prevention agenda — despite their central role in healthy aging and resilient health systems. We’re hopeful that sleep health will be recognized in the upcoming EU Cardiovascular Action Plan. Later, during a dinner with several health ministers hosted by Digital Europe, we exchanged perspectives on accelerating digital transformation and innovation across Europe’s health systems. A particular highlight was meeting Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, whose pace of innovation is truly inspiring 🇬🇷. Grateful for the openness, energy, and shared commitment — and encouraged by what we can build next. A heartfelt thank-you to Cecilia Bonefeld-Dahl and the entire Digital Europe team, and to my fellow Digital Europe Health Council members: Executive Chair Uwe Heckert, Padraic Ward (Roche), Holger Schmidt (Siemens Healthineers), Annick Faes (Johnson & Johnson), Lars-Oluf Nielsen (Epic), Myriam Fernández Martín, PhD, MSN, RN (AWS), Olga Mironenko Stampfer (UnitedHealth Group), and Istvan Petak MD, PhD (Genomate Health). 🙏 And lastly a shout out to my wonderful Resmed colleagues Justine Vandenbosch and Francesca Maria Risso. #DigitalHealth #HealthTech #AIinHealthcare #SleepHealth #EuropeanUnion #HealthcareInnovation #Brussels #DataInteroperability #HealthyAging #AIRegulation #BetterHealth
