On October 17th, we were delighted that teams from Howard S. Wright, a Balfour Beatty company, King County Parks, and local community members joined us for our Forterra Friday at Duwamish Hill Preserve - a 10.5-acre protected site in Tukwila with great historical, cultural, and ecological significance. The preserve is a former industrial storage yard and garbage pit that was saved from industrial development through a community partnership between Forterra, the City of Tukwila, and Friends of the Hill in 2004. After many years of hard work by volunteers, the Duwamish Hill Preserve was officially opened to the public in 2010.  Together, we cleared more than 7,000 square feet of blackberries, expanding the area we already cleared at previous Forterra Friday events. Some dug quietly; others shared stories of farming, gardening, and how they connect to land in their communities. Even with just minutes left in our two-hour event, volunteers were still hard at work, determined to pull every root. For many, it was their first time at the preserve, and a few chose to stay afterwards to walk around the site and really experience the park. Pulling blackberries to create space for native plants wasn’t just work; it was part of keeping the story of the Hill alive for future generations. The following day, Duwamish Alive hosted a bigger planting to carry that work forward. Thank you, Swire Coca-Cola, USA, for sponsoring this event and for all the volunteers who made this possible.

  • Last week we celebrated the reopening of our expanded and remodeled facility in Spokane, Washington! We were honored to be joined by local dignitaries, customers, and members of the community to cut the ribbon on our new warehouse and distribution center. We renovated 34,000 square feet and added 58,000 square feet of new warehouse space. With this enhanced operational capacity, we can better serve our 1,600 retail customers in the Spokane Valley and surrounding areas. As part of our commitment to the communities we call home, this project supported 31 local subcontractors and 18 local suppliers. Built to LEED Gold equivalent standards, the facility features 100% LED lighting, high efficiency HVAC systems, and rooftop solar panels. The warehouse is built to promote safety protocols and increase efficiency. Thank you to our team in Spokane and the many individuals who worked so hard to give our people a beautiful new and safe working environment.

Forterra and the Snohomish County Healthy Forest Project collaborated on a friendly and productive stewardship day at McCollum Park. We were excited to have 11 participants, many of whom were new to restoration, working among 80- to 90-year-old western red cedars and Douglas firs. The group tackled invasive blackberry regrowth in an area of native blackberry. At first it was tricky, but learning to spot the difference gave everyone a real sense of accomplishment. Meanwhile, Herb Robert (or “stinky bob”) proved an easier target, offering a quick win and keeping momentum high. Blue skies, sustaining snacks, and easy conversation gave the day a special kind of energy. We shared stories of past restoration work and of our lives beyond the park - from working with 4-H agricultural groups to tending apartment patio houseplants.  One participant said their favorite part was simply being under the trees, soaking up the forested calm despite the nearby highway. The towering trees also served as a reminder of why we do this: to care for today’s forests and tomorrow’s.  Thanks to Swire Coca-Cola, USA sponsorship, we had the fuel and supplies to make the experience not just productive, but joyful.

Water is essential to people and ecosystems, and it is the main ingredient in nearly all of our products. That’s why we support projects that aim to return water back to nature and communities, like the Soda Creek Restoration Project in the White River National Forest wetlands, which are critical to Denver’s water supply. Thanks to partners like National Forest Foundation & USDA Forest Service, The Coca-Cola Company and Swire Coca-Cola, USA are helping to restore damaged river ecosystems in the area's Soda Creek channel, with the aim to re-establish natural stream processes and help to revive these vital ecosystems.
