October is always a very busy time for geothermal events, but the news feed is also keeping up with lots of activity. Did you miss any of the major geothermal stories from the last 2 weeks? Let us help you catch up. 🙌 There is PLENTY of activity happening in the SEE/CEE region. Geothermal drilling has started in Slovakia, a deep geothermal heating facility has started operating in Estonia, exploration drilling continues in Türkiye, and Hungary has been chosen to host the next iteration of the European Geothermal Congress. ♨️ Indonesia continues with efforts on geothermal capacity addition. Star Energy Geothermal has completed a retrofit of several units of the Salak geothermal site, and drilling has started for the Unit 2 expansion of the Muara Laboh geothermal field. 🤝 On the technology frontier, EAPOSYS will be working with Halliburton to advance the development of their patented closed-loop AGS technology. 🌋 It's not all good news all the time in geothermal. In the Philippines, the service contract for the Montelago geothermal project has been terminated due to non-compliance with the government's five-year work plan requirement. It's late in the year but we're not even close to winding down yet. Want to keep updated on all of the most important geothermal news stories? Zanskar is changing the game for the geothermal industry utilizing their AI enhanced subsurface evaluation workflow that can even tell them what angle to drill their wells at! Exciting stuff. Last year they made headlines with a new drilling site at an existing underperforming geothermal plant that came on as the highest ever recorded flow rate in a conventional setting. Now, they have made their second discovery in an undeveloped site located in Northern Nevada. The site is expected to be developed into a 20 MW facility by 2028. This is a huge win for not just Zanskar, but the entire industry. Previously noncommercial sites, can now be unlocked! #geothermal #innovation #AI #technology #investment #energy #scale #development #drilling #power Article ---> https://lnkd.in/ggynVPDr

Great to see excellent research like the recent CSIS report on “Next-Generation Geothermal” shining a spotlight on the sector. It’s encouraging to see advanced geothermal technologies such as EGS, closed-loop, and oil & gas-enabled drilling getting real attention in policy and investor discussions. But we need to be careful. The current narrative risks being too optimistic and almost equating geothermal with “next-gen only.” In doing so, it risks underestimating both: • The proven contribution of conventional hydrothermal power, which still makes up more than 95% of global installed capacity today. • The huge untapped potential of geothermal heating worldwide, a market opportunity at least as large as power. For the future of geothermal, the real challenge is balance: accelerate innovation in next-gen approaches while also scaling the technologies we already know work, especially for heating. At ThinkGeoEnergy, we track both sides of this story through our global database and market intelligence work, because the sector’s success depends on not forgetting the proven while we invest in the promising. Read the CSIS report here: https://lnkd.in/evYC3hNg Picture: chart on the potential for next generation geothermal by country/ region (source: CSIS report based on IEA data) and one should mention that today’s geothermal power generation capacity stands at roughly 17 GW, so to get to 121 GW by 2035 is rather optimistic and we consider not as realistic as a projection, unfortunately.

Geothermal Energy Challenges Geothermal energy holds significant promise for the middle east, particularly along the Red Sea coast and in volcanic areas (see figure). A comprehensive evaluation of the region's full geothermal assets and their viability is a must to harness such a resource. However, there are some challenges in advancing geothermal development such as resource uncertainty, technical gaps, economic competitiveness, and regulatory hurdles. Resource Assessment and Technical Hurdles The current understanding of the geothermal resources' extent and characteristics is incomplete. To address this, a more focused approach is needed: • Specific Exploration Methodology: Current exploration workflows are largely adapted from hydrocarbon practices. There's an urgent need to establish technologies and workflows specifically tailored for geothermal exploration to accurately identify viable sites. • Comprehensive Resource Assessment: Detailed geological surveys and exploratory drilling are essential to better quantify the geothermal potential and understand its full scope. • Expertise and Infrastructure: Developing specialized technical skills, operational know-how, and supporting infrastructure is crucial to successfully manage and operate geothermal projects. Economic, Policy, and Logistical Constraints Geothermal projects face challenges related to cost-competitiveness and market integration: • Economic Viability: Geothermal energy currently struggles to be cost-competitive against the region's abundant oil and gas resources, making project financing and feasibility a significant concern. • Regulatory and Policy Framework: Streamlining permitting processes and offering targeted incentives are necessary steps to attract essential private sector investment. • Geographical Distribution and Transmission Costs: The most promising resources might require costly transmission infrastructure to connect geothermal plants to the existing power grid. • Competing Priorities: Geothermal development may face a challenge in securing investment and policy focus, as expanding capacity in more established solar and wind energy often takes precedence. What are other challenges facing the geothermal energy?
