I’ve never received a truly personalised email from a hotel or airline. Getting my name and points balance right isn’t personalisation - my 1998 copy of Microsoft Word could do that. The industry still treats me as one static customer. I’m at least four different people every year: Jan – Mar: premium business traveller, price-insensitive, needs early flights & walkable hotels. Apr - Jun: anniversary couple chasing romance and spas. Jul - Aug: exhausted uncle herding kids, begging for family rooms and kids clubs. Nov - Dec: dutiful son flying elderly parents home on humane schedules. Same loyalty number, four different wallets and priorities. Yet the emails never change. I still get generic 20% off spam, 12 months a year. They have more data on me than my mother does, but still can’t see I’m not one person. That’s not failed personalisation. That’s laziness wearing a “data-driven” mask. Please please get it right.
