Following his recent feature in Facility Executive, Brian Speckhals is again sharing critical insights, now with a focus on the education sector. Most facilities teams are putting out fires. The best ones? They're already three steps ahead. At 6:47 AM, before 800 students walk into 50 classrooms, the system is already running. Not because something went wrong. Because something was about to go right. Every surface checked. Every high-touch area sanitized. Every floor ready for safe foot traffic. Every window clear for natural light and focus. This is what proactive facility operations looks like in education environments. Systems built to prepare, not react. Here's what most people don't see: → Safety isn't just clean floors. It's preventing slip hazards before first period starts. → Protection extends beyond classrooms. Hallways, outdoor spaces, entry points all matter. → Readiness creates the conditions for learning. When facilities teams do their job right, teachers and students can do theirs. The difference between maintenance and systems thinking? Maintenance responds. Systems prepare. One system. Every morning. 800 reasons it matters. If you're managing education facilities in the Central Valley, what does your 6:47 AM look like? Drop a comment. we'd love to hear how other operations teams approach proactive facility management. #FacilitiesManagement #EducationFacilities #SchoolOperations #CentralValley #SystemsThinking #OperationalExcellence #FacilityServices #K12Operations #ProactiveMaintenance #CommercialCleaning #FacilityManagement #EducationLeadership #SchoolDistricts #CaliforniaEducation #FresnoCounty

Preparing School Fire Doors for Winter – Why It Matters 🍂🏫 Did you know that colder weather can actually affect how well your fire doors perform? When temperatures drop and humidity rises, timber fire doors can swell, seals may harden or crack, and door closers often become sluggish — all of which reduce the door’s ability to close and contain smoke or fire. That’s why winter is the perfect time for school managers and facilities teams to review: • Door gaps and alignment • The condition of seals and hinges • Whether doors fully close and latch • That all inspections are properly recorded A compliant, well-maintained fire door isn’t just a box-ticking exercise — it’s a vital line of defence for pupils, staff, and property. At Elevate Safety Solutions, we help schools stay ahead of seasonal challenges with: • Fire Risk Assessments (PAS 79) • Fire Door Inspections & BM TRADA Installations • Compartmentation Surveys & Fire Strategies 💬 Is your school ready for winter? 🚨 Establishing a Practice Drill Culture One of the simplest ways to enhance the effectiveness of your school’s practice drills is to (1) announce over the PA system and (2) message staff just prior to activation that it is a "practice drill". This small step has significant benefits. It helps build a strong culture and immediately removes confusion among students and staff who might otherwise move between classrooms seeking confirmation: “🤷♀️ Is this real or a drill?” 🔊 “Stand by for a practice emergency drill. Follow all procedures.” There’s an important nuance here, particularly if your school conforms to best practice and operates the three-drill system (see Part 3 of this series). You’ll know that a lockdown represents a significant escalation in security posture. The actions required during an active threat lockdown, such as hiding, barricading and protecting students inside rooms cannot be half-hearted. That’s why it’s essential to make it absolutely clear when an activation is a practice drill and when it’s a real emergency. 🚓 Additionally, given the seriousness of a lockdown response, it’s highly probable that visitors, new staff, or anyone unaware that it’s a practice drill could inadvertently escalate the situation, contacting police and prompting a tactical response to the site. 📞 It’s good policy to give your local police a quick courtesy call before conducting a lockdown practice drill, just in case. Announcing that a drill is a practice, whether Evacuation, Shelter-in-Place, or Lockdown, doesn’t detract from its realism or its short-notice value. Instead, it provides clarity and confidence, ensuring everyone understands the difference between a practice emergency activation and a real emergency activation. ✅ A simple, consistent message before pressing the button builds understanding, trust, and capability across your school community. #SchoolSafety #EmergencyManagement #CrisisResponse #LockdownDrill #SchoolLeadership #EmergencyDrills #SchoolPreparedness #IncidentManagement Prepared. Confident. Capable.

It's School Safety Week 🏫 And it's during this week that we reflect on our role in designing and creating environments where students and educators feel safe, supported, and able to thrive! At EAPC, we approach school design through CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) principles - not only to deter harm, but to build trust, support collaboration, and lay a foundation for learning. The work we do is rooted in the values that guide us every day: • Integrity: we design for safety because it is the right thing to do for our schools and communities • Collaboration: we partner with districts, educators, and stakeholders to solve safety challenges together • Commitment: we invest in relationships and long-term outcomes, not quick fixes • Stewardship: we make decisions that safeguard both people and resources for the future Real safety is not a single feature, it is the result of thoughtful design and shared responsibility. And we take pride in creating the conditions where teaching, learning, and growing can take place. #SchoolSafetyWeek #SafetyByDesign #K12Facilities #CEPTED #EAPCValues
