The reviews are in—East River Park is “a smashing success!” Lower East Side resident and journalist Julianne Escobedo Shepherd has been following the construction of East River Park over the last several years and is pleased to report that she and her neighbors find it as spectacular as we do. “…the vibe is pretty good” “…total game changer” “…feels like a vacation to [some] magical land that cares about human quality of life” “We've had variations of East River Park since it first opened in 1939, but something about this version feels more welcoming, one of the rare third spaces in the city where leisure costs nothing and the pluralism on which we pride ourselves bears out.” “…this is the park that I want” Escobedo Shepherd also spoke to ONE’s Matthijs Bouw about the broader East Side Coastal Resiliency (ESCR) project, which is the impetus for rebuilding a more resilient park. “The thinking, Bouw told Hell Gate, was to build the necessary floodgates while also incorporating feedback from the local community to better integrate public space—what Bouw called ‘social infrastructure.’” Read the article on Hell Gate! https://bit.ly/hg-erp #eastriverpark #eastsidecoastalresiliency #escr #resilience

Great!
Nice Mattijs!!!
Totally deserved praise!
I remember working on the Lower Passaic River superfund site for many years in the Newark, NJ area as an environmental consultant for one of the responsible parties. Billions was to be spent on remediation. But what the residents of the Ironbound Neighborhood along the river in Newark really wanted was walking trails along the river, park benches, shade trees and ball fields. This was their home and they wanted the responsible parties (and the USEPA) to listen to their concerns, needs and desires. The East River Park in NYC looks like a perfect example of listening to local residents and providing a beautiful space to get out in nature and relax.
