This initiative revealed something striking: There is zero correlation between price and quality. This is a really great episode Elizabeth Mitchell and Stacey Richter. From my perspective, the most important thing happening in healthcare now is that employers are finally getting the unique data on their unique group and they’re discovering that they can actually demand better from the supply side of healthcare. In countless speeches since CAA I’ve asked employer CFOs/fiduciaries in what other area of their business do they not know what things cost, what they could cost or what they SHOULD cost and exactly why they tolerate paying whatever cost is presented to them? Congrats to Elizabeth and to Purchaser Business Group on Health (PBGH) for this important work and project. It clearly gives big employers the insight and the courage to demand more and better. It gives employers the opportunity to send their unique demands to those supplying health services, thereby creating the rudimentary elements of a bonafide marketplace where none has existed in the past. A few other observations from this pod. Direct contracts have more measureable value than generic blunt instrument networks. Direct contracts serve the specific interests of the specific group. They also give unique care delivery organizations the opportunity to align their specific services with unique populations without the involvement of confiscatory middlemen. Also, most (not all) brokers, really don’t know much at all about care delivery organizations and how to actually help fiduciaries to procure more appropriately. This is a wake up call for them. Lastly, I’m thrilled to see this project getting the attention that it deserves and thereby putting the focus on employers getting the tools they need to gain insight into their existing contracts, prices and problems. In addition, employers should know that they can gain critical insight into their existing contracts including the inadequacies of those contracts which are also fixable, thereby recapturing huge dollars for the plan. Bob sees the increased traffic across the QHINs as evidence that TEFCA is fulfilling its promise to create a network of networks for secure and trusted health information exchange. "There is a movement afoot to enforce making an individual's medical information available at the point of care at the time of care. Further, we fundamentally believe that it's inefficient to just deliver raw data. We deliver something to the physician that is actionable. That's what's going to make this really work.
