Octopath Traveler 0 delivers a tight, compelling story with challenging turn-based battles and satisfying Boost-and-Break tactics, all wrapped in atmospheric HD-2D beauty. Building your own village and exploring the world feels rewarding and familiar thanks to the strong soundtrack and recognizable style. Fans of the series will feel right at home once again.
Octopath Traveler 0 is without a doubt the best game in the series, and it almost sounds strange when we consider that this is a reworked and expanded version of a mobile game. Despite that, the combat system has never been better, and the stories in this game are fantastic, and even through little pixel people they are more believable and poignant than most of the genre has offered in a long, long time. There's just one thing that really annoys me. Almost all of the music is recycled from previous games. It's amazing, and better than pretty much any other music that's come out since the first Octopath Traveler game, but still, we heard it in the first Octopath Traveler game.
People are reviewing this pretending they have played it. The review about graphics is just incorrect, and the audio issues do not exist in ps5, which this page is for. You can tell the person has not played the game since they assumed it was 8 stories again, it isnt.
That being said, game incredible. Much more coherent story then 1 and 2 with good-great writing. Honestly the story is some of the best Square has put out in awhile. Way darker then expected, and not in a cringy way. Music is exceptional as always and the town building is quite fun. Combat is at its peak here too. Best in the series. Hopefully they maintain it for Octo 3.
As for negatives. The voice acting is not perfect. There are some good performances and **** so good ones. The biggest gripe for me is the reuse of music from 1/2. It's not bad, and could be endearing but I would have preferred more fresh tracks. That is to say there are plenty of new songs, all the battle music is different!
Graphically, it is identical to Oct2. However on Ps5 it supports 4k/120. Which more so translates to 4k/90ish most of the time.
All in all great game. If you liked the first 2 pick this one up.
Octopath Traveler 0 is not only an ambitious bridge between past and present, but Square Enix's most mature attempt to reconcile the mobile nature of the original project with the expectations of a JRPG for home consoles. Its monumental structure, the dark, melodramatic, and uncompromising narrative, and the richness of its strategic mechanics deliver an experience that, while stemming from a gacha title, manages to establish itself as an authentic and significant chapter in the series. It's a long, at times challenging journey that requires patience and dedication, but one that rewards with a sense of growth, community, and discovery that is rare even in the modern landscape of the genre. Octopath Traveler continues to represent one of the most consistent and passionate interpretations of the classic JRPG.
Octopath Traveler 0, as a prequel to the franchise, keeps everything fans already love—an engaging story, strategic and deep gameplay with a cast of charming characters. While a few elements could be more polished, it still stands out as a JRPG worth keeping on your radar for the rest of the year.
While mobile games have clearly demonstrated their ability to deliver top-tier experiences, not all titles will translate well to consoles. In the case of Octopath Traveler 0, the game's gacha DNA is so deeply ingrained. This results in a execution that falls short of the phenomenal Octopath Traveler II, and it's likely that not all fans will be happy with the final product.
Octopath Traveler 0 is a great game in its broadest strokes, but manages to miss the high benchmark that the rest of the series has set for me. The bones of a mobile game are still very much here, candied with the presentation of a console experience. Despite this, I still largely enjoyed my time with Octopath Traveler 0, and very much want to see more from this now staple franchise.
Octopath Traveler 0 is the perfect game for newcomers, but it doesn’t quite live up to the sky-high expectations of true die-hard fans. As a result, it’s a pretty solid game, but not as good as it could have been.
Just another peak Octopath Traveler game, a perfect port and reimagining of a mobile game. Even the mobile game plays like a console game if they removed the gacha.
They improved everything in this game and its pretty much my Game of the Year
It's an okay game. The combat is as great as ever from previous entries, but I don't really enjoy the town building aspect, it feels tacked on and feels like a remnant that it's a mobile game because the game will go tell you to collect materials. I am not into that, i enjoyed the previous octopath games for their straightforward no frills approach, you always just moving forward in a new dungeon and not worrying about these Sim-like aspects which I do not really enjoy.
Graphics: It's like Octopath 1 but the contrast turned up. Who told SQEX that the lighting needed to be even MORE harsh? That's literally the #1 critique of HD-2D games in general, the lighting...
Story: Do you like edgy fanfiction written by 14 year olds? Okay, there's some good stuff in here (story is divided in 8 parts like before) but those only make the bad stuff look worse.
Audio: The quality **** **** dude, all the voice actors sound like they're recording in vastly different situations
Gameplay: Still pretty good honestly, it doesn't deserve a 0 but all of the above is disappointing. At the very least make it so that the lines don't sound like they're being recorded in a public bathroom... well now that I think about it, Octopath 2 had audio issues as well. Guess they wanted to bring that back.
