The house-turned-museum in Mexico City is painted a vibrant shade of cobalt with red, yellow and green accents splashed across its steps, window frames and doors.
This eye-catching landmark was the home of renowned painter and activist Frida Kahlo.
It’s also the inspiration for Graciela Gamboa’s sky blue Frida Taqueria food trucks in Honolulu and Waipahu.
Even the names of Gamboa’s dishes are inspired by Kahlo.
From tacos to nachos and carne asada fries, Frida Taqueria offers a variety of Mexican dishes to try.
Craving tacos? Try the birria tacos ($20), which feature three corn tortillas, birria meat with cheese, consomé, onions, cilantro and salsa roja. For a special combo, get the street tacos special ($13). This includes three tacos with 4-inch corn tortillas, onions, cilantro and salsa with a choice of meat. Meat options include carne asada (steak), shredded chicken, chorizo (pork sausage), carnitas (pork) and ground beef.
There’s also the chimichanga ($20), composed of one choice of meat, rice, beans and cheese topped with lettuce, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream, salsa verde and salsa roja.
Gamboa also highlights the bistec asada fries ($20), which includes french fries with steak, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo and salsa.
Gamboa enjoys hearing positive feedback from those who try her food.
She also encourages people to visit the food trucks for a taste and then stop by the restaurant to enjoy a larger menu.
“(I) always admired Frida because she was a famous painter who was proud of her Mexican roots and it showed in her paintings as well,” Gamboa says. “Frida would visit other countries and dress in Mexican traditional outfits and not be ashamed of where she came from.”
