🗨️ “HIV research has always been about people: their courage, creativity and determination to care for one another.” PLOS ONE recently spoke with CSRH researcher Professor Limin Mao for World Aids Day 2025 to explore how global disruptions have shaped HIV research, and what it will take to drive meaningful, community-centred progress. Together with Brent Mackie (ACON) and James Gray (Health Equity Matters), Limin reflects on innovations, emerging challenges, and the continued importance of a “whole-of-society approach” in responding to complex public health issues like HIV. 🔗 Read the full interview: https://lnkd.in/gPBUUnxY #WorldAidsDay #PLOSONE #HIVPrevention #Stigma #PublicHealth

🌍 Africultures Festival 2025 | Sydney 🎉 It was truly inspiring to be part of this year’s Africultures Festival, a lively celebration of African cultures, music, and community spirit that brought us all together! 🇦🇺🇬🇭🇳🇬🇿🇼🇹🇬🇺🇬🇿🇦🇸🇳 Isaac Addo, PhD, Sylvester Okeke, PhD, and I had the privilege of sharing insights from our ongoing project at UNSW Centre for Social Research in Health, where we are exploring Hepatitis B-related knowledge, attitudes, and health-seeking behaviours among sub-Saharan African, North African, and Middle Eastern communities in Australia. Our work underscores the importance of culturally responsive health promotion and meaningful community engagement in enhancing health outcomes and reducing health disparities and negative attitudes towards Hepatitis B. What made the experience even more meaningful was reconnecting with friends (Noël Zihabamwe Walter Ngwu Emmanuel Asante Chibuikem Michael Adilieme), colleagues (Aboagye Gyan Richard saraphina Baffoe), and community members (Dr Nadine Umutoni Wa Shema African Australian Advocacy Centre(AAAC)SydWest Multicultural Services ), whose passion continues to inspire and motivate the African community in Australia. #AfriculturesFestival #PublicHealth #CommunityEngagement #UNSW #CSRH

🔍 The Hidden Cost of Innovation: Digital Inequality in Australia As digital technologies evolve, so do the gaps in access and opportunity. UNSW Arts, Design & Architecture sociologist Dr Ash Watson explores how digital inequality is quietly shaping—and sometimes limiting—our society. From education and healthcare to civic participation, those without reliable access to digital tools or skills are being left behind. Dr Watson’s research calls for inclusive design, equitable digital policies, and a deeper understanding of how innovation can unintentionally reinforce disadvantage. 💬 “The social consequences of digital exclusion are escalating. It’s important we keep working on ways to intervene, and to change our thinking from technology first to people first when building our digital society.” 🔗 Watch the video: https://lnkd.in/eh9Xgxji 🔗 Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gpMdsSuD

💬 “The more people who understand how stigma works, the closer we get to dismantling it.” Dr Danielle Russell (Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney) brings a unique dual lens to her research on substance use, stigma and health equity. Having navigated healthcare systems in both the US and Australia, she’s experienced first-hand how approaches to care and community can differ. Ahead of guest speaking in our short course ‘Combating Stigma: Strategies for Inclusive Health Services’, we had the privilege of speaking with Danielle about dignity, inclusion, and why centring people with lived experience is essential to meaningful stigma research. ➡️ Read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/eqVdGJJ6 🔗 To continue the conversation, join Danielle in the next round of our short course, starting 7 October: https://lnkd.in/eAY39vT9 #Stigma #Healthcare #InclusiveHealth
