📢 New report reveals 1 in 7 Australians now live in poverty The latest findings from the Poverty and Inequality Partnership between UNSW Sydney and ACOSS show a sharp rise in poverty across Australia, with 3.7 million people—including 1 in 6 children—living below the poverty line in 2022–23. Senior Research Fellow Dr Yuvisthi Naidoo highlights the urgency of the situation: “This research shows that 1 in 7 people are now living in poverty. This is unacceptable in one of the wealthiest countries in the world.” She points to the impact of policy changes and housing costs: “The number of people living in poverty decreased in 2020 due to the temporary effective doubling of JobSeeker through the Covid supplement – but has since sharply risen to be now above pre-pandemic levels, with the removal of the Covid payments and dramatic rising housing costs.” “The steep increase in rents in recent years has had a particularly severe impact on people with the lowest incomes.” As Anti-Poverty Week begins, this report is a call to action for stronger policy responses to ensure all Australians can live with dignity. ➡️ Read the full report: bit.ly/povertyoverview2025

🚨New Report: It takes a ‘village’ to raise a child, but access to support networks is not equal for families across Australia, according to the newly-released Uniting Families Report. The report from Uniting NSW.ACT, in partnership with the UNSW Social Policy Research Centre, explores how parents seek help from extended family, friends, community groups and services – and the barriers that can stand in the way of these supports. 📢 The report calls for a shift in social services from individual-focused programs towards community-driven, relationship-building initiatives. Combating Stigma in Health Care Dr Timothy Broady, from UNSW ADA’s UNSW Centre for Social Research in Health, has spent his career addressing stigma and driving change in healthcare services. 💬 ”For some people, life just fits into the status quo, but for others, it’s a constant uphill battle. That’s why raising awareness and addressing stigma has become so important to me,” he says. Stigma in healthcare isn’t always intentional – it’s often embedded in systems, language, and everyday interactions. 💬 “Sometimes it’s a glance, a tone of voice, or the wording on a form. Someone might not even realise they’re doing it, but for someone who’s constantly judged, even the smallest cues can reinforce that feeling of exclusion,” says Dr Broady. The consequences are real: stigma can lead to discrimination, isolation, and reduced access to essential health and support services.
