💡Icons of Light: Three Designs That Shaped Contemporary Lighting Lighting designs from the late 20th century demonstrate how technical clarity, intelligent use of materials and formal restraint can create objects that remain relevant for decades. Luminaires from this period often strike a balance between functionality and a distinctive visual language, a combination that continues to influence product, interior and industrial design to this day. The following three examples illustrate the various ways in which this balance can be achieved when engineering logic meets a strong design concept. 💡Tizio, 1972 – Artemide, Italy Design: Richard Sapper Counterbalanced arms maintain equilibrium in any position, enabling precise one-hand adjustments. Power runs through rods and contact points, eliminating external cabling and giving the lamp its distinctive graphic silhouette. 💡Tolomeo, 1987 – Artemide, Italy Design: Michele de Lucchi, Giancarlo Fassina A system of aluminium arms and steel tension wires allows smooth, intuitive adjustability. A swivel joint increases flexibility, while the satin-finished shade provides focused task lighting and a soft ambient glow. 💡Taraxacum 88, 1988 – Flos, Italy Design: Achille Castiglioni A geometric aluminium frame carries 60 exposed bulbs, forming a luminous structure characterised by reflection, volume and transparency. The light source becomes the central design element rather than a hidden component. ✨ Three luminaires — three interpretations of how construction, light and form can interact. Each object demonstrates a clear design idea, executed with precision and a strong understanding of materials and lighting behaviour. ➡️ Which contemporary luminaries strike a balance that you consider exemplary in today’s design landscape? 🎨 Now open: Red Dot exhibition "Colours of Our Time" at designforum Wien Yesterday we celebrated the official opening of the Red Dot exhibition 'Colours of Our Time - Identity and Difference in Design" at Designforum Wien. The evening started with a welcome speech from Elli Schindler (Managing Director of designforum Wien) followed by a insightful keynote from Burkhard Jacob (Head of Red Dot Institute), who provided insights into the role of colour in design, brand identity and cultural expression. Afterwards, the guests had the opportunity to explore the exhibition. 🌈 Colours can shape brands, symbolise their values, and convey the quality of products. They play a decisive role in distinguishing a company’s offerings from those of competitors. In industrial and product design, colour is more than a visual attribute: it adds aesthetic quality beyond form and function and influences both perception and use. 🔴 The Red Dot exhibition at designforum Wien spans the arc from brand colours to the colour worlds of different generations, illustrated through everyday objects. Each generation has its own palette reflecting its culture – from the primary colours of the Bauhaus to the pastel shades of today. These colours mirror our perception, identity, and desire for orientation in a changing world. "Colours of Our Time" invites visitors to discover how colour connects us, defines eras, and influences our daily visual environment. 🗓 Exhibition duration: 28 November 2025 – 7 February 2026 🎄 Christmas break: Closed from 24 December 2025 to 1 January 2026 📍designforum Wien, MQ Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Vienna (Austria) Explore this vibrant journey through colour and design – it’s an experience worth seeing. The Gazelle Cayo redefines everyday cycling by merging a timeless bicycle silhouette with seamlessly integrated e-bike technology. In this interview with Red Dot, Stef de Groot from Koninklijke Gazelle shares how Gazelle balanced tradition, innovation and a refined design language in the development process. Discover how the Cayo sets a new standard for urban mobility. ⬇️ 🔴 What were the main objectives in the development of the Cayo? Our goal was to create a design that seamlessly blends traditional and modern elements. We wanted a design that would be instantly recognisable as a conventional bike while housing a powerful e-bike system that feels modern and detailed. The e-bike components have been integrated as much as possible to ensure that the Cayo looks as similar to a normal bike as possible. The frame design is reminiscent of Gazelle’s long-standing tradition in bicycle construction. The design details add a modern touch to the traditional silhouette. Highlights include the extended top tube with integrated seat tube adjustments, the flowing transitions with clearly defined lines in the frame and the rear light integrated into the mudguard strut. The result is a design that is instantly recognisable and contemporary at the same time. 🔴 As a brand, Gazelle is primarily known for its classic Dutch (e-)bikes. Is the development of an e-bike for this target audience a particular challenge for Gazelle? In an urban environment, riders want a reliable, high-quality bike with a high level of riding comfort. When developing this bike, we set ourselves the goal of setting a new standard for our Gazelle design language in the urban environment, which both appeals to the urban target group and is unmistakably a Gazelle. At Gazelle, we strive for holistic designs in which the tubes flow smoothly into one another. With the Cayo, we have achieved smooth transitions while maintaining a geometric aesthetic. The design lines at the front of the frame play a crucial role in defining these seamless transitions. 👉 See the full designer profile: https://lnkd.in/epYrAMSW 🔎 Discover more about Cayo here: https://lnkd.in/e97qj_rR 🚀 Now open: Submissions for the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2026. 🎓 Red Dot: Junior Prize 2025 – "Cicada’s Tune" The Red Dot: Junior Prize 2025 was awarded to students from Ling Tung University, Taiwan for Cicada’s Tune, a project that transforms the sounds of cicadas into a rich multisensory learning experience. By converting auditory calls into 2D visual representations and then materialising them with 3D-printed sound wave tubes and audio devices, the students created an interactive platform where users can listen to and explore the calls of different cicada species. The project also includes an illustrated guide and informational cards, providing fundamental knowledge about cicadas while connecting visual, auditory and hands-on elements. The goal is to deepen public understanding and offer an engaging, immersive way to appreciate the beauty and diversity of Taiwan’s cicadas. The team behind this innovative project consists of Wan-Chun Liu, Yong Qi La, Yi-Ching Ho, Hui-Chieh Lai, You-Zhen Lin, and Ruo Xuan Chen, guided by their supervising Professor Wei-Hsien Lan. On 7 November 2025, Jova Zec (Vice President of Red Dot) and Professor Dr. Peter Zec (CEO and Founder of Red Dot) presented the Junior Prize to the present students and their professor at the Red Dot Gala: Brands and Communication Design 2025 at the Konzerthaus Berlin. 🏆 More about the Junior Prize 2025 - "Cicada's Tune": https://lnkd.in/e2CRu5sE 👉 Read about the Junior Prize history here: https://lnkd.in/eb-XX9hw #RedDotAward #BrandsAndCommunicationDesign #JuniorPrize #StudentDesign #CicadasTune #LingTungUniversity #InnovativeDesign #MultisensoryLearning
