A mix of persistent and non-persistent dentries in there. Strictly
speaking, no need for kill_litter_super() anyway - it pins an internal
mount whenever a persistent dentry is created, so at fs shutdown time
there won't be any to deal with.
However, let's make it explicit - replace d_instantiate() with
d_make_persistent() + dput() (the latter in tracefs_end_creating(),
where it folds with inode_unlock() into simple_done_creating())
for dentries we want persistent and have d_make_discardable() done
either by simple_recursive_removal() (used by tracefs_remove())
or explicitly in eventfs_remove_events_dir().

If we have LOCKDOWN_TRACEFS, the function bails out - *after*
having locked the parent directory and without bothering to
undo that. Just check it before tracefs_start_creating()...

Set the things up for kernel-initiated creation of object in
a tree-in-dcache filesystem. With respect to locking it's
an equivalent of filename_create() - we either get a negative
dentry with locked parent, or ERR_PTR() and no locks taken.
tracefs and debugfs had that open-coded as part of their
object creation machinery; switched to calling new helper.

If a lookup in tracefs is done on a file that does not exist, it leaves a
dentry hanging around until memory pressure removes it. But eventfs
dentries should hang around as when their ref count goes to zero, it
requires more work to recreate it. For the rest of the tracefs dentries,
they hang around as their dentry is used as a descriptor for the tracing
system. But if a file lookup happens for a file in tracefs that does not
exist, it should be deleted.
Add a .d_delete callback that checks if dentry->fsdata is set or not. Only
eventfs dentries set fsdata so if it has content it should not be deleted
and should hang around in the cache.

The lookup_one_len family of functions is (now) only used internally by
a filesystem on itself either
- in a context where permission checking is irrelevant such as by a
virtual filesystem populating itself, or xfs accessing its ORPHANAGE
or dquota accessing the quota file; or
- in a context where a permission check (MAY_EXEC on the parent) has just
been performed such as a network filesystem finding in "silly-rename"
file in the same directory. This is also the context after the
_parentat() functions where currently lookup_one_qstr_excl() is used.
So the permission check is pointless.
The name "one_len" is unhelpful in understanding the purpose of these
functions and should be changed. Most of the callers pass the len as
"strlen()" so using a qstr and QSTR() can simplify the code.
This patch renames these functions (include lookup_positive_unlocked()
which is part of the family despite the name) to have a name based on
"lookup_noperm". They are changed to receive a 'struct qstr' instead
of separate name and len. In a few cases the use of QSTR() results in a
new call to strlen().
try_lookup_noperm() takes a pointer to a qstr instead of the whole
qstr. This is consistent with d_hash_and_lookup() (which is nearly
identical) and useful for lookup_noperm_unlocked().
The new lookup_noperm_common() doesn't take a qstr yet. That will be
tidied up in a subsequent patch.

Some filesystems, such as NFS, cifs, ceph, and fuse, do not have
complete control of sequencing on the actual filesystem (e.g. on a
different server) and may find that the inode created for a mkdir
request already exists in the icache and dcache by the time the mkdir
request returns. For example, if the filesystem is mounted twice the
directory could be visible on the other mount before it is on the
original mount, and a pair of name_to_handle_at(), open_by_handle_at()
calls could instantiate the directory inode with an IS_ROOT() dentry
before the first mkdir returns.
This means that the dentry passed to ->mkdir() may not be the one that
is associated with the inode after the ->mkdir() completes. Some
callers need to interact with the inode after the ->mkdir completes and
they currently need to perform a lookup in the (rare) case that the
dentry is no longer hashed.
This lookup-after-mkdir requires that the directory remains locked to
avoid races. Planned future patches to lock the dentry rather than the
directory will mean that this lookup cannot be performed atomically with
the mkdir.
To remove this barrier, this patch changes ->mkdir to return the
resulting dentry if it is different from the one passed in.
Possible returns are:
NULL - the directory was created and no other dentry was used
ERR_PTR() - an error occurred
non-NULL - this other dentry was spliced in
This patch only changes file-systems to return "ERR_PTR(err)" instead of
"err" or equivalent transformations. Subsequent patches will make
further changes to some file-systems to return a correct dentry.
Not all filesystems reliably result in a positive hashed dentry:
- NFS, cifs, hostfs will sometimes need to perform a lookup of
the name to get inode information. Races could result in this
returning something different. Note that this lookup is
non-atomic which is what we are trying to avoid. Placing the
lookup in filesystem code means it only happens when the filesystem
has no other option.
- kernfs and tracefs leave the dentry negative and the ->revalidate
operation ensures that lookup will be called to correctly populate
the dentry. This could be fixed but I don't think it is important
to any of the users of vfs_mkdir() which look at the dentry.
The recommendation to use
d_drop();d_splice_alias()
is ugly but fits with current practice. A planned future patch will
change this.

->d_revalidate() often needs to access dentry parent and name; that has
to be done carefully, since the locking environment varies from caller
to caller. We are not guaranteed that dentry in question will not be
moved right under us - not unless the filesystem is such that nothing
on it ever gets renamed.
It can be dealt with, but that results in boilerplate code that isn't
even needed - the callers normally have just found the dentry via dcache
lookup and want to verify that it's in the right place; they already
have the values of ->d_parent and ->d_name stable. There is a couple
of exceptions (overlayfs and, to less extent, ecryptfs), but for the
majority of calls that song and dance is not needed at all.
It's easier to make ecryptfs and overlayfs find and pass those values if
there's a ->d_revalidate() instance to be called, rather than doing that
in the instances.
This commit only changes the calling conventions; making use of supplied
values is left to followups.
NOTE: some instances need more than just the parent - things like CIFS
may need to build an entire path from filesystem root, so they need
more precautions than the usual boilerplate. This series doesn't
do anything to that need - these filesystems have to keep their locking
mechanisms (rename_lock loops, use of dentry_path_raw(), private rwsem
a-la v9fs).
One thing to keep in mind when using name is that name->name will normally
point into the pathname being resolved; the filename in question occupies
name->len bytes starting at name->name, and there is NUL somewhere after it,
but it the next byte might very well be '/' rather than '\0'. Do not
ignore name->len.

Commit 78ff64081949 ("vfs: Convert tracefs to use the new mount API")
converted tracefs to use the new mount APIs caused mount options
(e.g. gid=<gid>) to not take effect.
The tracefs superblock can be updated from multiple paths:
- on fs_initcall() to init_trace_printk_function_export()
- from a work queue to initialize eventfs
tracer_init_tracefs_work_func()
- fsconfig() syscall to mount or remount of tracefs
The tracefs superblock root inode gets created early on in
init_trace_printk_function_export().
With the new mount API, tracefs effectively uses get_tree_single() instead
of the old API mount_single().
Previously, mount_single() ensured that the options are always applied to
the superblock root inode:
(1) If the root inode didn't exist, call fill_super() to create it
and apply the options.
(2) If the root inode exists, call reconfigure_single() which
effectively calls tracefs_apply_options() to parse and apply
options to the subperblock's fs_info and inode and remount
eventfs (if necessary)
On the other hand, get_tree_single() effectively calls vfs_get_super()
which:
(3) If the root inode doesn't exists, calls fill_super() to create it
and apply the options.
(4) If the root inode already exists, updates the fs_context root
with the superblock's root inode.
(4) above is always the case for tracefs mounts, since the super block's
root inode will already be created by init_trace_printk_function_export().
This means that the mount options get ignored:
- Since it isn't applied to the superblock's root inode, it doesn't
get inherited by the children.
- Since eventfs is initialized from a separate work queue and
before call to mount with the options, and it doesn't get remounted
for mount.
Ensure that the mount options are applied to the super block and eventfs
is remounted to respect the mount options.
To understand this better, if fstab has the following:

On boot up, permissions look like:

The issue is that list_del() is used on an SRCU protected list variable
before the synchronization occurs. This can poison the list pointers while
there is a reader iterating the list.
This is simply fixed by using list_del_rcu() that is specifically made for
this purpose.

With structure layout randomization enabled for 'struct inode' we need to
avoid overlapping any of the RCU-used / initialized-only-once members,
e.g. i_lru or i_sb_list to not corrupt related list traversals when making
use of the rcu_head.
For an unlucky structure layout of 'struct inode' we may end up with the

The list debug message as well as RBX's symbolic value point out that the
object in question was allocated from 'tracefs_inode_cache' and that the
list's '->next' member is at offset 0. Dumping the layout of the relevant
parts of 'struct tracefs_inode' gives the following:

Above shows that 'vfs_inode.i_lru' overlaps with 'rcu' which will
destroy the 'i_lru' list as soon as the 'rcu' member gets used, e.g. in
call_rcu() or later when calling the RCU callback. This will disturb
concurrent list traversals as well as object reuse which assumes these
list heads will keep their integrity.
For reproduction, the following diff manually overlays 'i_lru' with
'rcu' as, otherwise, one would require some good portion of luck for
gambling an unlucky RANDSTRUCT seed:

The tracefs inode does not need to supply its own RCU delayed destruction
of its inode. The inode code itself offers both a "destroy_inode()"
callback that gets called when the last reference of the inode is
released, and the "free_inode()" which is called after a RCU
synchronization period from the "destroy_inode()".
The tracefs code can unlink the inode from its list in the destroy_inode()
callback, and the simply free it from the free_inode() callback. This
should provide the same protection.

Commit 77a06c33a22d ("eventfs: Test for ei->is_freed when accessing
ei->dentry") added another check, testing if the parent was freed after
we released the mutex. If so, the function returns NULL. However, all
callers expect it to either return a valid pointer or an error pointer,
at least since commit 5264a2f4bb3b ("tracing: Fix a NULL vs IS_ERR() bug
in event_subsystem_dir()"). Returning NULL will therefore fail the error
condition check in the caller.
Fix this by substituting the NULL return value with a fitting error
pointer.

The top "events" directory has a static inode (it's created when it is and
removed when the directory is removed). There's no need to use the events
ei->attr to determine its permissions. But it is used for saving the
permissions of the "events" directory for when it is created, as that is
needed for the default permissions for the files and directories
underneath it.
For example:
# cd /sys/kernel/tracing
# mkdir instances/foo
# chown 1001 instances/foo/events
The files under instances/foo/events should still have the same owner as
instances/foo (which the instances/foo/events ei->attr will hold), but the
events directory now has owner 1001.

The permissions being set during the creation of the inodes was updating
eventfs_inode attributes as well. Those attributes should only be touched
by the setattr or remount operations, not during the creation of inodes.
The eventfs_inode attributes should only be used to set the inodes and
should not be modified during the inode creation.
Simplify the code and fix the situation by:
1) Removing the eventfs_find_events() and doing a simple lookup for
the events descriptor in eventfs_get_inode()
2) Remove update_events_attr() as the attributes should only be used
to update the inode and should not be modified here.
3) Add update_inode_attr() that uses the attributes to determine what
the inode permissions should be.
4) As the parent_inode of the eventfs_root_inode structure is no longer
needed, remove it.
Now on creation, the inode gets the proper permissions without causing
side effects to the ei->attr field.

Now that inodes have their permissions updated on remount, the only other
places to update the inode permissions are when they are created and in
the setattr callback. The getattr and permission callbacks are not needed
as the inodes should already be set at their proper settings.
Remove the callbacks, as it not only simplifies the code, but also allows
more flexibility to fix the inconsistencies with various corner cases
(like changing the permission of an instance directory).

To simplify the code, create a eventfs_get_inode() that is used when an

When the inode is being dropped from the dentry, the TRACEFS_EVENT_INODE
flag needs to be cleared to prevent a remount from calling
eventfs_remount() on the tracefs_inode private data. There's a race
between the inode is dropped (and the dentry freed) to where the inode is
actually freed. If a remount happens between the two, the eventfs_inode
could be accessed after it is freed (only the dentry keeps a ref count on
it).
Currently the TRACEFS_EVENT_INODE flag is cleared from the dentry iput()
function. But this is incorrect, as it is possible that the inode has
another reference to it. The flag should only be cleared when the inode is
really being dropped and has no more references. That happens in the
drop_inode callback of the inode, as that gets called when the last
reference of the inode is released.
Remove the tracefs_d_iput() function and move its logic to the more
appropriate tracefs_drop_inode() callback function.

The change to update the permissions of the eventfs_inode had the
misconception that using the tracefs_inode would find all the
eventfs_inodes that have been updated and reset them on remount.
The problem with this approach is that the eventfs_inodes are freed when
they are no longer used (basically the reason the eventfs system exists).
When they are freed, the updated eventfs_inodes are not reset on a remount
because their tracefs_inodes have been freed.
Instead, since the events directory eventfs_inode always has a
tracefs_inode pointing to it (it is not freed when finished), and the
events directory has a link to all its children, have the
eventfs_remount() function only operate on the events eventfs_inode and
have it descend into its children updating their uid and gids.

When a remount happens, if a gid or uid is specified update the inodes to
have the same gid and uid. This will allow the simplification of the
permissions logic for the dynamically created files and directories.

The directories require unique inode numbers but all the eventfs files
have the same inode number. Prevent the directories from having the same
inode numbers as the files as that can confuse some tooling.

In function eventfs_find_events,there is a potential null pointer
that may be caused by calling update_events_attr which will perform

The events directory gets its permissions from the root inode. But this
can cause an inconsistency if the instances directory changes its
permissions, as the permissions of the created directories under it should
inherit the permissions of the instances directory when directories under
it are created.
Currently the behavior is:

Treat the events directory the same as other directories when it comes to
permissions. The events directory was considered different because it's
dentry is persistent, whereas the other directory dentries are created
when accessed. But the way tracefs now does its ownership by using the
root dentry's permissions as the default permissions, the events directory
can get out of sync when a remount is performed setting the group and user
permissions.
Remove the special case for the events directory on setting the
attributes. This allows the updates caused by remount to work properly as
well as simplifies the code.

The toplevel events directory is really no different than the events
directory of instances. Having the two be different caused
inconsistencies and made it harder to fix the permissions bugs.
Make all events directories act the same.

If the instances directory's permissions were never change, then have it
and its children use the mount point permissions as the default.
Currently, the permissions of instance directories are determined by the
instance directory's permissions itself. But if the tracefs file system is
remounted and changes the permissions, the instance directory and its
children should use the new permission.
But because both the instance directory and its children use the instance
directory's inode for permissions, it misses the update.
To demonstrate this:

# ls -ld instances/foo

There's an inconsistency with the way permissions are handled in tracefs.
Because the permissions are generated when accessed, they default to the
root inode's permission if they were never set by the user. If the user
sets the permissions, then a flag is set and the permissions are saved via
the inode (for tracefs files) or an internal attribute field (for
eventfs).
But if a remount happens that specify the permissions, all the files that
were not changed by the user gets updated, but the ones that were are not.
If the user were to remount the file system with a given permission, then
all files and directories within that file system should be updated.
This can cause security issues if a file's permission was updated but the
admin forgot about it. They could incorrectly think that remounting with
permissions set would update all files, but miss some.

Add a new link list that keeps track of all the tracefs_inodes which has
the permission flags that tell if the file/dir should use the root inode's
permission or not. Then on remount, clear all the flags so that the
default behavior of using the root inode's permission is done for all
files and directories.

The freeing of eventfs_inode via a kfree_rcu() callback. But the content
of the eventfs_inode was being freed after the last kref. This is
dangerous, as changes are being made that can access the content of an
eventfs_inode from an RCU loop.
Instead of using kfree_rcu() use call_rcu() that calls a function to do
all the freeing of the eventfs_inode after a RCU grace period has expired.

Synthetic events create and destroy tracefs files when they are created
and removed. The tracing subsystem has its own file descriptor
representing the state of the events attached to the tracefs files.
There's a race between the eventfs files and this file descriptor of the
tracing system where the following can cause an issue:
With two scripts 'A' and 'B' doing:
Script 'A':
echo "hello int aaa" > /sys/kernel/tracing/synthetic_events
while :
do
echo 0 > /sys/kernel/tracing/events/synthetic/hello/enable
done
Script 'B':
echo > /sys/kernel/tracing/synthetic_events
Script 'A' creates a synthetic event "hello" and then just writes zero
into its enable file.
Script 'B' removes all synthetic events (including the newly created
"hello" event).
What happens is that the opening of the "enable" file has:

But deleting the events frees the "file" descriptor, and a "use after
free" happens with the dereference at "file->tr".
The file descriptor does have a reference counter, but there needs to be a
way to decrement it from the eventfs when the eventfs_inode is removed
that represents this file descriptor.
Add an optional "release" callback to the eventfs_entry array structure,
that gets called when the eventfs file is about to be removed. This allows
for the creating on the eventfs file to increment the tracing file
descriptor ref counter. When the eventfs file is deleted, it can call the
release function that will call the put function for the tracing file
descriptor.
This will protect the tracing file from being freed while a eventfs file
that references it is being opened.

Convert the tracefs filesystem to the new internal mount API as the old
one will be obsoleted and removed. This allows greater flexibility in
communication of mount parameters between userspace, the VFS and the
filesystem.

Only the root "events" directory stores a dentry. There's no reason to
hold a dentry pointer for every eventfs_inode as it is never set except
for the root "events" eventfs_inode.
Create a eventfs_root_inode structure that holds the events_dir dentry.
The "events" eventfs_inode *is* special, let it have its own descriptor.

There's a couple of if statements in eventfs_root_lookup() that should
never be true. Instead of removing them, add WARN_ON_ONCE() around them.
One is a tracefs_inode not being for eventfs.
The other is a child being freed but still on the parent's children
list. When a child is freed, it is removed from the list under the
same mutex that is held during the iteration.

Yes, yes, I know the slab people were planning on going slow and letting
every subsystem fight this thing on their own. But let's just rip off
the band-aid and get it over and done with. I don't want to see a
number of unnecessary pull requests just to get rid of a flag that no
longer has any meaning.
This was mainly done with a couple of 'sed' scripts and then some manual
cleanup of the end result.

The directory link count in eventfs was somewhat bogus. It was only being
updated when a directory child was being looked up and not on creation.
One solution would be to update in get_attr() the link count by iterating
the ei->children list and then adding 2. But that could slow down simple
stat() calls, especially if it's done on all directories in eventfs.
Another solution would be to add a parent pointer to the eventfs_inode
and keep track of the number of sub directories it has on creation. But
this adds overhead for something not really worthwhile.
The solution decided upon is to keep all directory links in eventfs as 1.
This tells user space not to rely on the hard links of directories. Which
in this case it shouldn't.

The dentries and inodes are created when referenced in the lookup code.
There's no reason to call fsnotify_*() functions when they are created by
a reference. It doesn't make any sense.

The eventfs inode had pointers to dentries (and child dentries) without
actually holding a refcount on said pointer. That is fundamentally
broken, and while eventfs tried to then maintain coherence with dentries
going away by hooking into the '.d_iput' callback, that doesn't actually
work since it's not ordered wrt lookups.
There were two reasonms why eventfs tried to keep a pointer to a dentry:
- the creation of a 'events' directory would actually have a stable
dentry pointer that it created with tracefs_start_creating().
And it needed that dentry when tearing it all down again in
eventfs_remove_events_dir().
This use is actually ok, because the special top-level events
directory dentries are actually stable, not just a temporary cache of
the eventfs data structures.
- the 'eventfs_inode' (aka ei) needs to stay around as long as there
are dentries that refer to it.
It then used these dentry pointers as a replacement for doing
reference counting: it would try to make sure that there was only
ever one dentry associated with an event_inode, and keep a child
dentry array around to see which dentries might still refer to the
parent ei.
This gets rid of the invalid dentry pointer use, and renames the one
valid case to a different name to make it clear that it's not just any
random dentry.
The magic child dentry array that is kind of a "reverse reference list"
is simply replaced by having child dentries take a ref to the ei. As
does the directory dentries. That makes the broken use case go away.

In order for the dentries to stay up-to-date with the eventfs changes,
just add a 'd_revalidate' function that checks the 'is_freed' bit.
Also, clean up the dentry release to actually use d_release() rather
than the slightly odd d_iput() function. We don't care about the inode,
all we want to do is to get rid of the refcount to the eventfs data
added by dentry->d_fsdata.
It would probably be cleaner to make eventfs its own filesystem, or at
least set its own dentry ops when looking up eventfs files. But as it
is, only eventfs dentries use d_fsdata, so we don't really need to split
these things up by use.
Another thing that might be worth doing is to make all eventfs lookups
mark their dentries as not worth caching. We could do that with
d_delete(), but the DCACHE_DONTCACHE flag would likely be even better.
As it is, the dentries are all freeable, but they only tend to get freed
at memory pressure rather than more proactively. But that's a separate
issue.

The dentry lookup for eventfs files was very broken, and had lots of
signs of the old situation where the filesystem names were all created
statically in the dentry tree, rather than being looked up dynamically
based on the eventfs data structures.
You could see it in the naming - how it claimed to "create" dentries
rather than just look up the dentries that were given it.
You could see it in various nonsensical and very incorrect operations,
like using "simple_lookup()" on the dentries that were passed in, which
only results in those dentries becoming negative dentries. Which meant
that any other lookup would possibly return ENOENT if it saw that
negative dentry before the data was then later filled in.
You could see it in the immense amount of nonsensical code that didn't
actually just do lookups.

The eventfs_find_events() code tries to walk up the tree to find the
event directory that a dentry belongs to, in order to then find the
eventfs inode that is associated with that event directory.
However, it uses an odd combination of walking the dentry parent,
looking up the eventfs inode associated with that, and then looking up
the dentry from there. Repeat.
But the code shouldn't have back-pointers to dentries in the first
place, and it should just walk the dentry parenthood chain directly.
Similarly, 'set_top_events_ownership()' looks up the dentry from the
eventfs inode, but the only reason it wants a dentry is to look up the
superblock in order to look up the root dentry.
But it already has the real filesystem inode, which has that same
superblock pointer. So just pass in the superblock pointer using the
information that's already there, instead of looking up extraneous data
that is irrelevant.

inode was exposed to others through the dentry with 'd_instantiate()'.

eventfs uses the tracefs_inode and assumes that it's already initialized
to zero. That is, it doesn't set fields to zero (like ti->private) after
getting its tracefs_inode. This causes bugs due to stale values.
Just initialize the entire structure to zero on allocation so there isn't
any more surprises.
This is a partial fix to access to ti->private. The assignment still needs
to be made before the dentry is instantiated.

The eventfs inodes and directories are allocated when referenced. But this
leaves the issue of keeping consistent inode numbers and the number is
only saved in the inode structure itself. When the inode is no longer
referenced, it can be freed. When the file that the inode was representing
is referenced again, the inode is once again created, but the inode number
needs to be the same as it was before.
Just making the inode numbers the same for all files is fine, but that
does not work with directories. The find command will check for loops via
the inode number and having the same inode number for directories triggers:

Linus pointed out that the eventfs_inode structure ends with a single
32bit int, and on 64 bit machines, there's likely a 4 byte hole due to
alignment. We can use this hole to store the inode number for the
eventfs_inode. All directories in eventfs are represented by an
eventfs_inode and that data structure can hold its inode number.
That last int was also purposely placed at the end of the structure to
prevent holes from within. Now that there's a 4 byte number to hold the
inode, both the inode number and the last integer can be moved up in the
structure for better cache locality, where the llist and rcu fields can be
moved to the end as they are only used when the eventfs_inode is being
deleted.

As noted in the "Deprecated Interfaces, Language Features, Attributes,
and Conventions" documentation [1], size calculations (especially
multiplication) should not be performed in memory allocator (or similar)
function arguments due to the risk of them overflowing. This could lead
to values wrapping around and a smaller allocation being made than the
caller was expecting. Using those allocations could lead to linear
overflows of heap memory and other misbehaviors.
So, use the purpose specific kcalloc() function instead of the argument
size * count in the kzalloc() function.

The original eventfs code added a wrapper around the dcache_readdir open
callback and created all the dentries and inodes at open, and increment
their ref count. A wrapper was added around the dcache_readdir release
function to decrement all the ref counts of those created inodes and
dentries. But this proved to be buggy[1] for when a kprobe was created
during a dir read, it would create a dentry between the open and the
release, and because the release would decrement all ref counts of all
files and directories, that would include the kprobe directory that was
not there to have its ref count incremented in open. This would cause the
ref count to go to negative and later crash the kernel.
To solve this, the dentries and inodes that were created and had their ref
count upped in open needed to be saved. That list needed to be passed from
the open to the release, so that the release would only decrement the ref
counts of the entries that were incremented in the open.
Unfortunately, the dcache_readdir logic was already using the
file->private_data, which is the only field that can be used to pass
information from the open to the release. What was done was the eventfs
created another descriptor that had a void pointer to save the
dcache_readdir pointer, and it wrapped all the callbacks, so that it could
save the list of entries that had their ref counts incremented in the
open, and pass it to the release. The wrapped callbacks would just put
back the dcache_readdir pointer and call the functions it used so it could
still use its data[2].
But Linus had an issue with the "hijacking" of the file->private_data
(unfortunately this discussion was on a security list, so no public link).
Which we finally agreed on doing everything within the iterate_shared
callback and leave the dcache_readdir out of it[3]. All the information
needed for the getents() could be created then.
But this ended up being buggy too[4]. The iterate_shared callback was not
the right place to create the dentries and inodes. Even Christian Brauner
had issues with that[5].
An attempt was to go back to creating the inodes and dentries at
the open, create an array to store the information in the
file->private_data, and pass that information to the other callbacks.[6]
The difference between that and the original method, is that it does not
use dcache_readdir. It also does not up the ref counts of the dentries and
pass them. Instead, it creates an array of a structure that saves the
dentry's name and inode number. That information is used in the
iterate_shared callback, and the array is freed in the dir release. The
dentries and inodes created in the open are not used for the iterate_share
or release callbacks. Just their names and inode numbers.
Linus did not like that either[7] and just wanted to remove the dentries
being created in iterate_shared and use the hard coded inode numbers.
[ All this while Linus enjoyed an unexpected vacation during the merge
window due to lack of power. ]

The dentries and inodes are created in the readdir for the sole purpose of
getting a consistent inode number. Linus stated that is unnecessary, and
that all inodes can have the same inode number. For a virtual file system
they are pretty meaningless.
Instead use a single unique inode number for all files and one for all
directories.

As the ei->entries array is fixed for the duration of the eventfs_inode,
it can be used to skip over already read entries in eventfs_iterate().
That is, if ctx->pos is greater than zero, there's no reason in doing the
loop across the ei->entries array for the entries less than ctx->pos.
Instead, start the lookup of the entries at the current ctx->pos.

In order to apply a shortcut to skip over the current ctx->pos
immediately, by using the ei->entries array, the reading of that array
should be first. Moving the array reading before the linked list reading
will make the shortcut change diff nicer to read.

The ctx->pos was only updated when it added an entry, but the "skip to
current pos" check (c--) happened for every loop regardless of if the
entry was added or not. This inconsistency caused readdir to be incorrect.
It was due to:

That's because of the way the callback() works. Some events may not have
all files, and the callback can return 0 to tell eventfs to skip the file
for this directory.

Where the function event has the TRACE_EVENT_FL_IGNORE_ENABLE set.
This means that the entries array elements for "enable", "filter" and
"trigger" when called on the function event will have the callback return
0 and not 1, to tell eventfs to skip these files for it.
Because the "skip to current ctx->pos" check happened for all entries, but
the ctx->pos++ only happened to entries that exist, it would confuse the
reading of a directory. Which would cause:

The missing "enable", "filter" and "trigger" caused ls to show "hist",
"hist_debug" and "inject" twice.
Update the ctx->pos for every iteration to keep its update and the "skip"
update consistent. This also means that on error, the ctx->pos needs to be
decremented if it was incremented without adding something.

If ei->is_freed is set in eventfs_iterate(), it means that the directory
that is being iterated on is in the process of being freed. Just exit the
loop immediately when that is ever detected, and separate out the return
of the entry->callback() from ei->is_freed.

Instead of walking the dentries on mount/remount to update the gid values of
all the dentries if a gid option is specified on mount, just update the root
inode. Add .getattr, .setattr, and .permissions on the tracefs inode
operations to update the permissions of the files and directories.
For all files and directories in the top level instance:
/sys/kernel/tracing/*
It will use the root inode as the default permissions. The inode that
represents: /sys/kernel/tracing (or wherever it is mounted).
When an instance is created:
mkdir /sys/kernel/tracing/instance/foo
The directory "foo" and all its files and directories underneath will use
the default of what foo is when it was created. A remount of tracefs will
not affect it.
If a user were to modify the permissions of any file or directory in
tracefs, it will also no longer be modified by a change in ownership of a
remount.
The events directory, if it is in the top level instance, will use the
tracefs root inode as the default ownership for itself and all the files and
directories below it.
For the events directory in an instance ("foo"), it will keep the ownership
of what it was when it was created, and that will be used as the default
ownership for the files and directories beneath it.

The eventfs creates dynamically allocated dentries and inodes. Using the
dcache_readdir() logic for its own directory lookups requires hiding the
cursor of the dcache logic and playing games to allow the dcache_readdir()
to still have access to the cursor while the eventfs saved what it created
and what it needs to release.
Instead, just have eventfs have its own iterate_shared callback function
that will fill in the dent entries. This simplifies the code quite a bit.

The "lookup" parameter is a way to differentiate the call to
create_file/dir_dentry() from when it's just a lookup (no need to up the
dentry refcount) and accessed via a readdir (need to up the refcount).
But reality, it just makes the code more complex. Just up the refcount and
let the caller decide to dput() the result or not.

A flag was needed to denote which eventfs_inode was the "events"
directory, so a bit was taken from the "nr_entries" field, as there's not
that many entries, and 2^30 is plenty. But the bit number for nr_entries
was not updated to reflect the bit taken from it, which would add an
unnecessary integer to the structure.

If a getdents() is called on the tracefs directory but does not get all
the files, it can leave a "cursor" dentry in the d_subdirs list of tracefs
dentry. This cursor dentry does not have a d_inode for it. Before
referencing tracefs_inode from the dentry, the d_inode must first be
checked if it has content. If not, then it's not a tracefs_inode and can
be ignored.
The following caused a crash:

That's because the 256 BUF_SIZE was not big enough to read all the
dentries of the tracefs file system and it left a "cursor" dentry in the
subdirs of the tracefs root inode. Then on remounting with "gid=1000",
it would cause an iteration of all dentries which hit:

Which crashed because of the dereference of the cursor dentry which had a NULL
d_inode.
In the subdir loop of the dentry lookup of set_gid(), if a child has a
NULL d_inode, simply skip it.

It was reported that when mounting the tracefs file system with a gid
other than root, the ownership did not carry down to the eventfs directory
due to the dynamic nature of it.
A fix was done to solve this, but it had two issues.
(a) if the attr passed into update_inode_attr() was NULL, it didn't do
anything. This is true for files that have not had a chown or chgrp
done to itself or any of its sibling files, as the attr is allocated
for all children when any one needs it.

(b) When the attr does not denote the UID or GID, it defaulted to using
the parent uid or gid. This is incorrect as changing the parent
uid or gid will automatically change all its children.

At first it was thought that this could be easily fixed by just making the
default ownership of the superblock when it was mounted. But this does not
handle the case of:

If the superblock was used, then the group ownership would be that of what
it was when it was mounted, when it should instead be "tracing".
Instead, set a flag for the top level eventfs directory ("events") to flag
which eventfs_inode belongs to it.
Since the "events" directory's dentry and inode are never freed, it does
not need to use its attr field to restore its mode and ownership. Use the
this eventfs_inode's attr as the default ownership for all the files and
directories underneath it.
When the events eventfs_inode is created, it sets its ownership to its
parent uid and gid. As the events directory is created at boot up before
it gets mounted, this will always be uid=0 and gid=0. If it's created via
an instance, then it will take the ownership of the instance directory.
When the file system is mounted, it will update all the gids if one is
specified. This will have a callback to update the events evenfs_inode's
default entries.
When a file or directory is created under the events directory, it will
walk the ei->dentry parents until it finds the evenfs_inode that belongs
to the events directory to retrieve the default uid and gid values.

changed to dynamically created.
This has caused me to encounter a problem where the gid I specified in
the mounting parameters cannot apply to all files, as in the following

Eventfs uses simple_lookup(), however, it will fail if the name of the
entry is beyond NAME_MAX length. When this error is encountered, eventfs
still tries to create dentries instead of skipping the dentry creation.
When the dentry is attempted to be created in this state d_wait_lookup()
will loop forever, waiting for the lookup to be removed.
Fix eventfs to return the error in simple_lookup() back to the caller
instead of continuing to try to create the dentry.

The eventfs directory is dynamically created via the meta data supplied by
the existing trace events. All files and directories in eventfs has a
parent. Do not allow NULL to be passed into eventfs_start_creating() as
the parent because that should never happen. Warn if it does.

The both create_file_dentry() and create_dir_dentry() takes a boolean
parameter "lookup", as on lookup the inode_lock should already be taken,
but for dcache_dir_open_wrapper() it is not taken.
There's no reason that the dcache_dir_open_wrapper() can't take the
inode_lock before calling these functions. In fact, it's better if it
does, as the lock can be held throughout both directory and file
creations.
This also simplifies the code, and possibly prevents unexpected race
conditions when the lock is released.

If memory reclaim happens, it can reclaim file system pages. The file
system pages from eventfs may take the eventfs_mutex on reclaim. This
means that allocation while holding the eventfs_mutex must not call into
filesystem reclaim. A lockdep splat uncovered this.

With the call to simple_recursive_removal() on the entire eventfs sub
system when the directory is removed, it performs the d_invalidate on all
the dentries when it is removed. There's no need to do clean ups when a
dentry is being created while the directory is being deleted.
As dentries are cleaned up by the simpler_recursive_removal(), trying to
do d_invalidate() in these functions will cause the dentry to be
invalidated twice, and crash the kernel.

The logic to free the eventfs_inode (ei) use to set is_freed and clear the
"dentry" field under the eventfs_mutex. But that changed when a race was
found where the ei->dentry needed to be cleared when the last dput() was
called on it. But there was still logic that checked if ei->dentry was not
NULL and is_freed is set, and would warn if it was.
But since that situation was changed and the ei->dentry isn't cleared
until the last dput() is called on it while the ei->is_freed is set, do
not test for that condition anymore, and change the comments to reflect
that.

Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt:
- Remove eventfs_file descriptor
This is the biggest change, and the second part of making eventfs
create its files dynamically.
In 6.6 the first part was added, and that maintained a one to one
mapping between eventfs meta descriptors and the directories and file
inodes and dentries that were dynamically created. The directories
were represented by a eventfs_inode and the files were represented by
a eventfs_file.
In v6.7 the eventfs_file is removed. As all events have the same
directory make up (sched_switch has an "enable", "id", "format", etc
files), the handing of what files are underneath each leaf eventfs
directory is moved back to the tracing subsystem via a callback.
When an event is added to the eventfs, it registers an array of
evenfs_entry's. These hold the names of the files and the callbacks
to call when the file is referenced. The callback gets the name so
that the same callback may be used by multiple files. The callback
then supplies the filesystem_operations structure needed to create
this file.
This has brought the memory footprint of creating multiple eventfs
instances down by 2 megs each!
- User events now has persistent events that are not associated to a
single processes. These are privileged events that hang around even
if no process is attached to them
- Clean up of seq_buf
There's talk about using seq_buf more to replace strscpy() and
friends. But this also requires some minor modifications of seq_buf
to be able to do this
- Expand instance ring buffers individually
Currently if boot up creates an instance, and a trace event is
enabled on that instance, the ring buffer for that instance and the
top level ring buffer are expanded (1.4 MB per CPU). This wastes
memory as this happens when nothing is using the top level instance
- Other minor clean ups and fixes

Looking at how dentry is removed via the tracefs system, I found that
eventfs does not do everything that it did under tracefs. The tracefs
removal of a dentry calls simple_recursive_removal() that does a lot more
than a simple d_invalidate().
As it should be a requirement that any eventfs_inode that has a dentry, so
does its parent. When removing a eventfs_inode, if it has a dentry, a call
to simple_recursive_removal() on that dentry should clean up all the
dentries underneath it.
Add WARN_ON_ONCE() to check for the parent having a dentry if any children
do.

There exists a race between holding a reference of an eventfs_inode dentry
and the freeing of the eventfs_inode. If user space has a dentry held long
enough, it may still be able to access the dentry's eventfs_inode after it
has been freed.
To prevent this, have he eventfs_inode freed via the last dput() (or via
RCU if the eventfs_inode does not have a dentry).
This means reintroducing the eventfs_inode del_list field at a temporary
place to put the eventfs_inode. It needs to mark it as freed (via the
list) but also must invalidate the dentry immediately as the return from
eventfs_remove_dir() expects that they are. But the dentry invalidation
must not be called under the eventfs_mutex, so it must be done after the
eventfs_inode is marked as free (put on a deletion list).

The callback function that is used to create inodes and dentries is not
protected by anything and the data that is passed to it could become
stale. After eventfs_remove_dir() is called by the tracing system, it is
free to remove the events that are associated to that directory.
Unfortunately, that means the callbacks must not be called after that.

The safest way to protect this is to wrap the callback with:

This will make sure that the callback will not be called after it is
freed. But now it needs to be known that the callback is called while
holding internal eventfs locks, and that it must not call back into the

Now that inodes and dentries are created on the fly, they are also
reclaimed on memory pressure. Since the ownership and file mode are saved
in the inode, if they are freed, any changes to the ownership and mode
will be lost.
To counter this, if the user changes the permissions or ownership, save
them, and when creating the inodes again, restore those changes.

The eventfs_inode (ei) is protected by SRCU, but the ei->dentry is not. It
is protected by the eventfs_mutex. Anytime the eventfs_mutex is released,
and access to the ei->dentry needs to be done, it should first check if
ei->is_freed is set under the eventfs_mutex. If it is, then the ei->dentry
is invalid and must not be used. The ei->dentry must only be accessed
under the eventfs_mutex and after checking if ei->is_freed is set.
When the ei is being freed, it will (under the eventfs_mutex) set is_freed
and at the same time move the dentry to a free list to be cleared after
the eventfs_mutex is released. This means that any access to the
ei->dentry must check first if ei->is_freed is set, because if it is, then
the dentry is on its way to be freed.

As the eventfs_inode is freed in two different locations, make a helper
function free_ei() to make sure all the allocated fields of the
eventfs_inode is freed.
This requires renaming the existing free_ei() which is called by the srcu
handler to free_rcu_ei() and have free_ei() just do the freeing, where
free_rcu_ei() will call it.

The eventfs_inode->is_freed was a union with the rcu_head with the
assumption that when it was on the srcu list the head would contain a
pointer which would make "is_freed" true. But that was a wrong assumption
as the rcu head is a single link list where the last element is NULL.
Instead, split the nr_entries integer so that "is_freed" is one bit and
the nr_entries is the next 31 bits. As there shouldn't be more than 10
(currently there's at most 5 to 7 depending on the config), this should
not be a problem.

The creation of the top events directory does a dget() at the end of the
creation in eventfs_create_events_dir() with a comment saying the final
dput() will happen when it is removed. The problem is that a dget() is
already done on the dentry when it was created with tracefs_start_creating()!
The dget() now just causes a memory leak of that dentry.
Remove the extra dget() as the final dput() in the deletion of the events
directory actually matches the one in tracefs_start_creating().

As the comment right above a WARN_ON() in create_file_dentry() states:
* Note, with the mutex held, the e_dentry cannot have content
* and the ei->is_freed be true at the same time.
But the WARN_ON() only has:
WARN_ON_ONCE(ei->is_free);
Where to match the comment (and what it should actually do) is:
dentry = *e_dentry;
WARN_ON_ONCE(dentry && ei->is_free)
Also in that case, set dentry to NULL (although it should never happen).

The update to removing the eventfs_file changed the way the events top
level directory was handled. Instead of returning a dentry, it now returns
the eventfs_inode. In this changed, the removing of the events top level
directory is not much different than removing any of the other
directories. Because of this, the removal just called eventfs_remove_dir()
instead of eventfs_remove_events_dir().
Although eventfs_remove_dir() does the clean up, it misses out on the
dget() of the ei->dentry done in eventfs_create_events_dir(). It makes
more sense to match eventfs_create_events_dir() with a specific function
eventfs_remove_events_dir() and this specific function can then perform
the dput() to the dentry that had the dget() when it was created.

Instead of having a descriptor for every file represented in the eventfs
directory, only have the directory itself represented. Change the API to
send in a list of entries that represent all the files in the directory
(but not other directories). The entry list contains a name and a callback
function that will be used to create the files when they are accessed.
struct eventfs_inode *eventfs_create_events_dir(const char *name, struct dentry *parent,
const struct eventfs_entry *entries,
int size, void *data);
is used for the top level eventfs directory, and returns an eventfs_inode
that will be used by:

where both of the above take an array of struct eventfs_entry entries for
every file that is in the directory.
The entries are defined by:

Where the name is the name of the file and the callback gets called when
the file is being created. The callback passes in the name (in case the
same callback is used for multiple files), a pointer to the mode, data and
fops. The data will be pointing to the data that was passed in
eventfs_create_dir() or eventfs_create_events_dir() but may be overridden
to point to something else, as it will be used to point to the
inode->i_private that is created. The information passed back from the
callback is used to create the dentry/inode.
If the callback fills the data and the file should be created, it must
return a positive number. On zero or negative, the file is ignored.
This logic may also be used as a prototype to convert entire pseudo file
systems into just-in-time allocation.
The "show_events_dentry" file has been updated to show the directories,
and any files they have.

The dcache_dir_open_wrapper() could be called when a dynamic event is
being deleted leaving a dentry with no children. In this case the
dlist->dentries array will never be allocated. This needs to be checked
for in eventfs_release(), otherwise it will trigger a NULL pointer
dereference.

What happened above, the first open (dfd) will call
dcache_dir_open_wrapper() that will create the dentries and up their ref
counts.
Now the creation of "kp2" will add another dentry within the kprobes
directory.
Upon the close of dfd, eventfs_release() will now do a dput for all the
entries in kprobes. But this is where the problem lies. The open only
upped the dentry of kp1 and not kp2. Now the close is decrementing both
kp1 and kp2, which causes kp2 to get a negative count.
Doing a "trace-cmd reset" which deletes all the kprobes cause the kernel
to crash! (due to the messed up accounting of the ref counts).
To solve this, save all the dentries that are opened in the
dcache_dir_open_wrapper() into an array, and use this array to know what
dentries to do a dput on in eventfs_release().
Since the dcache_dir_open_wrapper() calls dcache_dir_open() which uses the
file->private_data, we need to also add a wrapper around dcache_readdir()
that uses the cursor assigned to the file->private_data. This is because
the dentries need to also be saved in the file->private_data. To do this
create the structure:

Which will hold both the cursor and the dentries. Some shuffling around is
needed to make sure that dcache_dir_open() and dcache_readdir() only see
the cursor.

The eventfs files list is protected by SRCU. In earlier iterations it was
protected with just RCU, but because it needed to also call sleepable
code, it had to be switch to SRCU. The dcache_dir_open_wrapper()
list_for_each_rcu() was missed and did not get converted over to
list_for_each_srcu(). That needs to be fixed.

When an instance is removed, the top level files of the eventfs directory
are not cleaned up. Call the eventfs_remove() on each of the entries to
free them.

Currently when rmdir on an instance is done, eventfs_remove_events_dir()
is called and it does a dput on the dentry and then frees the
eventfs_inode that represents the events directory.
But there's no protection against a reader reading the top level events
directory at the same time and we can get a use after free error. Instead,
use the dput() associated to the dentry to also free the eventfs_inode
associated to the events directory, as that will get called when the last
reference to the directory is released.

All the eventfs external functions do not check if TRACEFS_LOCKDOWN was
set or not. This can caused some functions to return success while others
fail, which can trigger unexpected errors.
Add the missing lockdown checks.

The function tracefs_create_dir() was missing a lockdown check and was
called by the RV code. This gave an inconsistent behavior of this function
returning success while other tracefs functions failed. This caused the
inode being freed by the wrong kmem_cache.

- Added a way to easier filter with cpumasks:
# echo 'cpumask & CPUS{17-42}' > /sys/kernel/tracing/events/ipi_send_cpumask/filter
- Show actual size of ring buffer after modifying the ring buffer
size via buffer_size_kb.
Currently it just returns what was written, but the actual size
rounds up to the sub buffer size. Show that real size instead.
Major changes:
- Added "eventfs". This is the code that handles the inodes and
dentries of tracefs/events directory. As there are thousands of
events, and each event has several inodes and dentries that
currently exist even when tracing is never used, they take up
precious memory. Instead, eventfs will allocate the inodes and
dentries in a JIT way (similar to what procfs does). There is now
metadata that handles the events and subdirectories, and will
create the inodes and dentries when they are used.
Note, I also have patches that remove the subdirectory meta data,
but will wait till the next merge window before applying them. It's
a little more complex, and I want to make sure the dynamic code
works properly before adding more complexity, making it easier to
revert if need be.
Minor changes:
- Optimization to user event list traversal
- Remove intermediate permission of tracefs files (note the
intermediate permission removes all access to the files so it is
not a security concern, but just a clean up)
- Add the complex fix to FORTIFY_SOURCE to the kernel stack event
logic
- Other minor cleanups"

The struct eventfs_file is a local structure and should not be parsed by
kernel doc. It also does not fully follow the kerneldoc format and is
causing kerneldoc to spit out errors. Replace the /** to /* so that
kerneldoc no longer processes this structure.
Also format the comments of the delete union of the structure to be a bit
better.

Right now inode->i_mode is updated twice to reach the desired value
in tracefs_apply_options(). Because there is no lock protecting the two
writes, other threads might read the intermediate value of inode->i_mode.

I think there is no need to introduce a lock but it is better to
only update inode->i_mode ONCE, so the readers will either see the old
or latest value, rather than an intermediate/temporary value.
Note, the race is not a security concern as the intermediate value is more
locked down than either the start or end version. This is more just to do
the conversion cleanly.

Up until now, /sys/kernel/tracing/events was no different than any other
part of tracefs. The files and directories within the events directory was
created when the tracefs was mounted, and also created for the instances in
/sys/kernel/tracing/instances/<instance>/events. Most of these files and
directories will never be referenced. Since there are thousands of these
files and directories they spend their time wasting precious memory
resources.
Move the "events" directory to the new eventfs. The eventfs will take the
meta data of the events that they represent and store that. When the files
in the events directory are referenced, the dentry and inodes to represent
them are then created. When the files are no longer referenced, they are
freed. This saves the precious memory resources that were wasted on these
seldom referenced dentries and inodes.
Running the following:

When events are removed from tracefs, the eventfs must be aware of this.
The eventfs_remove() removes the meta data from eventfs so that it will no
longer create the files associated with that event.
When an instance is removed from tracefs, eventfs_remove_events_dir() will
remove and clean up the entire "events" directory.
The helper function eventfs_remove_rec() is used to clean up and free the
associated data from eventfs for both of the added functions. SRCU is used
to protect the lists of meta data stored in the eventfs. The eventfs_mutex
is used to protect the content of the items in the list.
As lookups may be happening as deletions of events are made, the freeing
of dentry/inodes and relative information is done after the SRCU grace
period has passed.

eventfs_add_events_file() to add the data needed to create a specific file
located at the top level events directory. The dentry/inode will be
created when the events directory is scanned.
eventfs_add_file() to add the data needed for files within the directories

Add eventfs_file structure which will hold the properties of the eventfs
files and directories.
Add following functions to create the directories in eventfs:
eventfs_create_events_dir() will create the top level "events" directory
within the tracefs file system.
eventfs_add_subsystem_dir() creates an eventfs_file descriptor with the
given name of the subsystem.
eventfs_add_dir() creates an eventfs_file descriptor with the given name of
the directory and attached to a eventfs_file of a subsystem.
Add tracefs_inode structure to hold the inodes, flags and pointers to
private data used by eventfs.

Convert to struct mnt_idmap.
Last cycle we merged the necessary infrastructure in
256c8aed2b42 ("fs: introduce dedicated idmap type for mounts").
This is just the conversion to struct mnt_idmap.
Currently we still pass around the plain namespace that was attached to a
mount. This is in general pretty convenient but it makes it easy to
conflate namespaces that are relevant on the filesystem with namespaces
that are relevent on the mount level. Especially for non-vfs developers
without detailed knowledge in this area this can be a potential source for
bugs.
Once the conversion to struct mnt_idmap is done all helpers down to the
really low-level helpers will take a struct mnt_idmap argument instead of
two namespace arguments. This way it becomes impossible to conflate the two
eliminating the possibility of any bugs. All of the vfs and all filesystems
only operate on struct mnt_idmap.

Users may have explicitly configured their tracefs permissions; we
shouldn't overwrite those just because a second mount appeared.
Only clobber if the options were provided at mount time.
Note: the previous behavior was especially surprising in the presence of
automounted /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/.

Al Viro brought it to my attention that the dentries may not be filled
when the parse_options() is called, causing the call to set_gid() to
possibly crash. It should only be called if parse_options() succeeds
totally anyway.
He suggested the logical place to do the update is in apply_options().

- The Real Time Linux Analysis (RTLA) tool is added to the tools
directory.

- trace_marker(_raw) now uses stream_open() to allow multiple threads
to safely write to it. Note, this could possibly break existing
user space, but we will not know until we hear about it, and then

- Some simplification of event trigger code.
- Make synthetic events process its callback better to not hinder
other event callbacks that are registered. Needed for user defined
events.

Instead of referencing the inode from a dentry via dentry->d_inode, use

As people have been asking to allow non-root processes to have access to
the tracefs directory, it was considered best to only allow groups to have
access to the directory, where it is easier to just set the tracefs file
system to a specific group (as other would be too dangerous), and that way
the admins could pick which processes would have access to tracefs.
Unfortunately, this broke tooling on Android that expected the other bit
to be set. For some special cases, for non-root tools to trace the system,
tracefs would be mounted and change the permissions of the top level
directory which gave access to all running tasks permission to the
tracing directory. Even though this would be dangerous to do in a
production environment, for testing environments this can be useful.
Now with the new changes to not allow other (which is still the proper
thing to do), it breaks the testing tooling. Now more code needs to be
loaded on the system to change ownership of the tracing directory.
The real solution is to have tracefs honor the gid=xxx option when
mounting. That is,
(tracing group tracing has value 1003)
mount -t tracefs -o gid=1003 tracefs /sys/kernel/tracing
should have it that all files in the tracing directory should be of the
given group.
Copy the logic from d_walk() from dcache.c and simplify it for the mount
case of tracefs if gid is set. All the files in tracefs will be walked and
their group will be set to the value passed in.

The tracefs file system is by default mounted such that only root user can
access it. But there are legitimate reasons to create a group and allow
those added to the group to have access to tracing. By changing the
permissions of the tracefs mount point to allow access, it will allow
group access to the tracefs directory.
There should not be any real reason to allow all access to the tracefs
directory as it contains sensitive information. Have the default
permission of directories being created not have any OTH (other) bits set,
such that an admin that wants to give permission to a group has to first
disable all OTH bits in the file system.

Extend some inode methods with an additional user namespace argument. A
filesystem that is aware of idmapped mounts will receive the user
namespace the mount has been marked with. This can be used for
additional permission checking and also to enable filesystems to
translate between uids and gids if they need to. We have implemented all
relevant helpers in earlier patches.
As requested we simply extend the exisiting inode method instead of
introducing new ones. This is a little more code churn but it's mostly
mechanical and doesnt't leave us with additional inode methods.

If on boot up, lockdown is activated for tracefs, don't even bother creating
the files. This can also prevent instances from being created if lockdown is
in effect.

I bisected this down to the addition of the proxy_ops into tracefs for
lockdown. It appears that the allocation of the proxy_ops and then freeing
it in the destroy_inode callback, is causing havoc with the memory system.
Reading the documentation about destroy_inode and talking with Linus about
this, this is buggy and wrong. When defining the destroy_inode() method, it
is expected that the destroy_inode() will also free the inode, and not just
the extra allocations done in the creation of the inode. The faulty commit
causes a memory leak of the inode data structure when they are deleted.
Instead of allocating the proxy_ops (and then having to free it) the checks
should be done by the open functions themselves, and not hack into the
tracefs directory. First revert the tracefs updates for locked_down and then
later we can add the locked_down checks in the kernel/trace files.

Pull kernel lockdown mode from James Morris:
"This is the latest iteration of the kernel lockdown patchset, from
Matthew Garrett, David Howells and others.
From the original description:
This patchset introduces an optional kernel lockdown feature,
intended to strengthen the boundary between UID 0 and the kernel.
When enabled, various pieces of kernel functionality are restricted.
Applications that rely on low-level access to either hardware or the
kernel may cease working as a result - therefore this should not be
enabled without appropriate evaluation beforehand.
The majority of mainstream distributions have been carrying variants
of this patchset for many years now, so there's value in providing a
doesn't meet every distribution requirement, but gets us much closer
to not requiring external patches.
There are two major changes since this was last proposed for mainline:
- Separating lockdown from EFI secure boot. Background discussion is
covered here: https://lwn.net/Articles/751061/
- Implementation as an LSM, with a default stackable lockdown LSM
module. This allows the lockdown feature to be policy-driven,
rather than encoding an implicit policy within the mechanism.
The new locked_down LSM hook is provided to allow LSMs to make a
policy decision around whether kernel functionality that would allow
tampering with or examining the runtime state of the kernel should be
permitted.
The included lockdown LSM provides an implementation with a simple
policy intended for general purpose use. This policy provides a coarse
level of granularity, controllable via the kernel command line:
lockdown={integrity|confidentiality}
Enable the kernel lockdown feature. If set to integrity, kernel features
that allow userland to modify the running kernel are disabled. If set to
confidentiality, kernel features that allow userland to extract
confidential information from the kernel are also disabled.
This may also be controlled via /sys/kernel/security/lockdown and
overriden by kernel configuration.
New or existing LSMs may implement finer-grained controls of the
lockdown features. Refer to the lockdown_reason documentation in
include/linux/security.h for details.
The lockdown feature has had signficant design feedback and review
across many subsystems. This code has been in linux-next for some
weeks, with a few fixes applied along the way.

Tracefs may release more information about the kernel than desirable, so
restrict it when the kernel is locked down in confidentiality mode by
preventing open().

tracefs_ops is initialized inside tracefs_create_instance_dir and not
modified after. tracefs_create_instance_dir allows for initialization
only once, and is called from create_trace_instances(marked __init),
which is called from tracer_init_tracefs(marked __init). Also, mark
tracefs_create_instance_dir as __init.

btrfs, debugfs, reiserfs and tracefs call save_mount_options() and reiserfs
calls replace_mount_options(), but they then implement their own
->show_options() methods and don't touch s_options, rendering the saved
options unnecessary. I'm trying to eliminate s_options to make it easier
to implement a context-based mount where the mount options can be passed
individually over a file descriptor.
Remove the calls to save/replace_mount_options() call in these cases.

simple_fill_super() is passed an array of tree_descr structures which
describe the files to create in the filesystem's root directory. Since
these arrays are never modified intentionally, they should be 'const' so
that they are placed in .rodata and benefit from memory protection.
This patch updates the function signature and all users, and also
constifies tree_descr.name.

CURRENT_TIME macro is not appropriate for filesystems as it
doesn't use the right granularity for filesystem timestamps.
Use current_time() instead.
CURRENT_TIME is also not y2038 safe.
This is also in preparation for the patch that transitions
vfs timestamps to use 64 bit time and hence make them
y2038 safe. As part of the effort current_time() will be
extended to do range checks. Hence, it is necessary for all
file system timestamps to use current_time(). Also,
current_time() will be transitioned along with vfs to be
y2038 safe.
Note that whenever a single call to current_time() is used
to change timestamps in different inodes, it is because they
share the same time granularity.

Please, use those for access to ->i_mutex; over the coming cycle

In tracefs' start_creating(), we pin the file system to safely access
its root. When we failed to create a file, we unpin the file system via
failed_creating() to release the mount count and eventually the reference
of the singleton vfsmount.
However, when we run into an error during lookup_one_len() when still
in start_creating(), we only release the parent's mutex but not so the
reference on the mount.
F.e., in securityfs_create_file(), after doing simple_pin_fs() when
lookup_one_len() fails there, we infact do simple_release_fs(). This
seems necessary here as well.
Same issue seen in debugfs due to 190afd81e4a5 ("debugfs: split the
beginning and the end of __create_file() off"), which seemed to got
carried over into tracefs, too. Noticed during code review.

it allows for a simpler and fully correct version of
fs_fully_visible to be written.

The tracing "instances" directory can create sub tracing buffers
with mkdir, and remove them with rmdir. As a mkdir will also create
all the files and directories that control the sub buffer the inode
mutexes need to be released before this is done, to avoid deadlocks.
It is better to let the tracing system unlock the inode mutexes before
calling the functions that create the files within the new directory
(or deletes the files from the one being destroyed).
Now that tracing has been converted over to tracefs, the tracefs file
system can be modified to accommodate this feature. It still releases
the locks, but the filesystem itself can take care of the ugly
business and let the user just do what it needs.
The tracing system now attaches a descriptor to the directory dentry
that can have userspace create or remove sub directories. If this
descriptor does not exist for a dentry, then that dentry can not be
used to create other directories. This descriptor holds a mkdir and
rmdir method that only takes a character string as an argument.
The tracefs file system will first make a copy of the dentry name
before releasing the locks. Then it will pass the copied name to the
methods. It is up to the tracing system that supplied the methods to
handle races with duplicate names and such as all the inode mutexes
would be released when the functions are called.

When tracefs is configured, have the directory /sys/kernel/tracing appear
just like /sys/kernel/debug appears when debugfs is configured.
This will give a consistent place for system admins to mount tracefs.

Add a separate file system to handle the tracing directory. Currently it
is part of debugfs, but that is starting to show its limits.
One thing is that in order to access the tracing infrastructure, you need
to mount debugfs. As that includes debugging from all sorts of sub systems
in the kernel, it is not considered advisable to mount such an all
encompassing debugging system.
Having the tracing system in its own file systems gives access to the
tracing sub system without needing to include all other systems.
Another problem with tracing using the debugfs system is that the
instances use mkdir to create sub buffers. debugfs does not support mkdir
from userspace so to implement it, special hacks were used. By controlling
the file system that the tracing infrastructure uses, this can be properly
done without hacks.
