Various DT and fwnode functions take a compatible string as a parameter. These are often used in cases which don't have a driver, so they've been missed. The additional checks add about 400 more undocumented compatible strings. 2024-05-30dt-bindings: kbuild: Fix dt_binding_check on unconfigured buildRob Herring (Arm)1-1/+1
The 'dt_binding_check' target shouldn't depend on the kernel configuration, but it has since commit 604a57ba9781 ("dt-bindings: kbuild: Add separate target/dependency for processed-schema.json"). That is because CHECK_DT_BINDING make variable was dropped, but scripts/dtc/Makefile was missed. The CHECK_DTBS variable can be used instead. Reported-by: Francesco Dolcini <francesco.dolcini@toradex.com> Fixes: 604a57ba9781 ("dt-bindings: kbuild: Add separate target/dependency for processed-schema.json") Signed-off-by: "Rob Herring (Arm)" <robh@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org>
2024-05-10kbuild: use $(src) instead of $(srctree)/$(src) for source directoryMasahiro Yamada1-3/+3
Kbuild conventionally uses $(obj)/ for generated files, and $(src)/ for checked-in source files. It is merely a convention without any functional difference. In fact, $(obj) and $(src) are exactly the same, as defined in scripts/Makefile.build: src := $(obj) When the kernel is built in a separate output directory, $(src) does not accurately reflect the source directory location. While Kbuild resolves this discrepancy by specifying VPATH=$(srctree) to search for source files, it does not cover all cases. For example, when adding a header search path for local headers, -I$(srctree)/$(src) is typically passed to the compiler. This introduces inconsistency between upstream and downstream Makefiles because $(src) is used instead of $(srctree)/$(src) for the latter. To address this inconsistency, this commit changes the semantics of $(src) so that it always points to the directory in the source tree. Going forward, the variables used in Makefiles will have the following meanings: $(obj) - directory in the object tree $(src) - directory in the source tree (changed by this commit) $(objtree) - the top of the kernel object tree $(srctree) - the top of the kernel source tree Consequently, $(srctree)/$(src) in upstream Makefiles need to be replaced with $(src). 2023-11-09dt: dt-extract-compatibles: Don't follow symlinks when walking treeNícolas F. R. A. Prado1-2/+12
The iglob function, which we use to find C source files in the kernel tree, always follows symbolic links. This can cause unintentional recursions whenever a symbolic link points to a parent directory. A common scenario is building the kernel with the output set to a directory inside the kernel tree, which will contain such a symlink. Instead of using the iglob function, use os.walk to traverse the directory tree, which by default doesn't follow symbolic links. fnmatch is then used to match the glob on the filename, as well as ignore hidden files (which were ignored by default with iglob). This approach runs just as fast as using iglob. 2023-09-20dt: dt-extract-compatibles: Add flag for driver matching compatiblesNícolas F. R. A. Prado1-9/+48
Add a new flag, '--driver-match', to the dt-extract-compatibles script that causes it to only print out compatibles that are expected to match a driver. This output can then be used by tests to detect device probe failures. In order to filter the compatibles down to only ones that will match to a driver, the following is considered: - A compatible needs to show up in a driver's of_match_table for it to be matched to a driver - Compatibles that are used in both of_match_table and OF_DECLARE type macros can't be expected to match to a driver and so are ignored. One exception is CLK_OF_DECLARE_DRIVER, since it indicates that a driver will also later probe, so compatibles in this macro are not ignored. Signed-off-by: Nícolas F. R. A. 2022-09-27dt: Add a check for undocumented compatible strings in kernelRob Herring1-0/+69
Add a make target, dt_compatible_check, to extract compatible strings from kernel sources and check if they are documented by a schema. At least version v2022.08 of dtschema with dt-check-compatible is required. This check can also be run manually on specific files or directories: scripts/dtc/dt-extract-compatibles drivers/clk/ | \ xargs dt-check-compatible -v -s Documentation/devicetree/bindings/processed-schema.json Currently, there are about 3800 undocumented compatible strings. Most of these are cases where the binding is not yet converted (given there are 1900 .txt binding files remaining). git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/robh/linux Pull devicetree updates from Rob Herring: - Add Krzysztof Kozlowski as co-maintainer for DT bindings providing much needed help. - DT schema validation now takes DTB files as input rather than intermediate YAML files. This decouples the validation from the source level syntax information. There's a bunch of schema fixes as a result of switching to DTB based validation which exposed some errors and incomplete schemas and examples. - Kbuild improvements to explicitly warn users running 'make dt_binding_check' on missing yamllint - Expand DT_SCHEMA_FILES kbuild variable to take just a partial filename or path instead of the full path to 1 file. - Convert various bindings to schema format: mscc,vsc7514-switch, multiple GNSS bindings, ahci-platform, i2c-at91, multiple UFS bindings, cortina,gemini-sata-bridge, cortina,gemini-ethernet, Atmel SHA, Atmel TDES, Atmel AES, armv7m-systick, Samsung Exynos display subsystem, nuvoton,npcm7xx-timer, samsung,s3c2410-i2c, zynqmp_dma, msm/mdp4, rda,8810pl-uart - New schemas for u-boot environment variable partition, TI clksel - New compatible strings for Renesas RZ/V2L SoC - Vendor prefixes for Xen, HPE, deprecated Synopsys, deprecated HiSilicon - Add/fix schemas for QEMU Arm 'virt' machine - Drop unused of_alias_get_alias_list() function - Add a script to check DT unittest EXPECT message output. 2022-03-11dt-bindings: kbuild: Use DTB files for validationRob Herring2-14/+1
Switch the DT validation to use DTB files directly instead of a DTS to YAML conversion. The original motivation for supporting validation on DTB files was to enable running validation on a running system (e.g. 'dt-validate /sys/firmware/fdt') or other cases where the original source DTS is not available. The YAML format was not without issues. Using DTBs with the schema type information solves some of those problems. The YAML format relies on the DTS source level information including bracketing of properties, size directives, and phandle tags all of which are lost in a DTB file. While standardizing the bracketing is a good thing, it does cause a lot of extra warnings and churn to fix them. Another issue has been signed types are not validated correctly as sign information is not propagated to YAML. Using the schema type information allows for proper handling of signed types. YAML also can't represent the full range of 64-bit integers as numbers are stored as floats by most/all parsers. The DTB validation works by decoding property values using the type information in the schemas themselves. The main corner case this does not work for is matrix types where neither dimension is fixed. For now, checking the dimensions in these cases are skipped. 2022-02-28of: unittest: add program to process EXPECT messagesFrank Rowand1-0/+408
If unittest detects a problem it will print a warning or error message to the console. Unittest also triggers warning and error messages from other kernel code as a result of intentionally bad unittest data. This has led to confusion as to whether the triggered messages are an expected result of a test or whether there is a real problem that is independent of unittest. EXPECT messages were added to unittest to report each triggered message that is expected, resulting in verbose console output. scripts/dtc/of_unittest is a new program that processes the EXPECT messages to determine whether the triggered messages occurred and also removes the excess verbosity of the EXPECT messages. More information is available from 'scripts/dtc/of_unittest_expect --help'. 2022-02-17treewide: Replace zero-length arrays with flexible-array membersGustavo A. R. Silva1-2/+2
There is a regular need in the kernel to provide a way to declare having a dynamically sized set of trailing elements in a structure. Kernel code should always use “flexible array members”[1] for these cases. The older style of one-element or zero-length arrays should no longer be used[2]. This code was transformed with the help of Coccinelle: (next-20220214$ spatch --jobs $(getconf _NPROCESSORS_ONLN) --sp-file script.cocci --include-headers --dir . > output.patch) @@ identifier S, member, array; type T1, T2; @@ struct S { ... 2022-01-17scripts/dtc: dtx_diff: remove broken example from help textMatthias Schiffer1-6/+2
dtx_diff suggests to use <(...) syntax to pipe two inputs into it, but this has never worked: The /proc/self/fds/... paths passed by the shell will fail the `[ -f "${dtx}" ] && [ -r "${dtx}" ]` check in compile_to_dts, but even with this check removed, the function cannot work: hexdump will eat up the DTB magic, making the subsequent dtc call fail, as a pipe cannot be rewound. Simply remove this broken example, as there is already an alternative one that works fine. 2020-08-10kbuild: introduce hostprogs-always-y and userprogs-always-yMasahiro Yamada1-3/+2
To build host programs, you need to add the program names to 'hostprogs' to use the necessary build rule, but it is not enough to build them because there is no dependency. There are two types of host programs: built as the prerequisite of another (e.g. gen_crc32table in lib/Makefile), or always built when Kbuild visits the Makefile (e.g. genksyms in scripts/genksyms/Makefile). The latter is typical in Makefiles under scripts/, which contains host programs globally used during the kernel build. To build them, you need to add them to both 'hostprogs' and 'always-y'. This commit adds hostprogs-always-y as a shorthand. The same applies to user programs. net/bpfilter/Makefile builds bpfilter_umh on demand, hence always-y is unneeded. In contrast, programs under samples/ are added to both 'userprogs' and 'always-y' so they are always built when Kbuild visits the Makefiles. userprogs-always-y works as a shorthand. 2020-06-08scripts/dtc: use pkg-config to include <yaml.h> in non-standard pathMasahiro Yamada1-0/+3
Commit 067c650c456e ("dtc: Use pkg-config to locate libyaml") added 'pkg-config --libs' to link libyaml installed in a non-standard location. yamltree.c includes <yaml.h>, but that commit did not add the search path for <yaml.h>. If /usr/include/yaml.h does not exist, it fails to build. A user can explicitly pass HOSTCFLAGS to work around it, but the policy is not consistent. There are two ways to deal with libraries in a non-default location. [1] Use HOSTCFLAGS and HOSTLDFLAGS for additional search paths for headers and libraries. They are documented in Documentation/kbuild/kbuild.rst $ make HOSTCFLAGS='-I <prefix>/include' HOSTLDFLAGS='-L <prefix>/lib' [2] Use pkg-config 'pkg-config --cflags' for querying the header search path 'pkg-config --libs' for querying the lib and its path If we go with pkg-config, use [2] consistently. Do not mix up [1] and [2]. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Rob Herring <robh@kernel.org>
2020-04-17kbuild: check libyaml installation for 'make dt_binding_check'Masahiro Yamada1-1/+1
If you run 'make dtbs_check' without installing the libyaml package, the error message "dtc needs libyaml ..." is shown. This should be checked also for 'make dt_binding_check' because dtc needs to validate *.example.dts extracted from *.yaml files. It is missing since commit 4f0e3a57d6eb ("kbuild: Add support for DT binding schema checks"), but this fix-up is applicable only after commit e10c4321dc1e ("kbuild: allow to run dt_binding_check and dtbs_check in a single command"). I gave the Fixes tag to the latter in case somebody is interested in back-porting this. 2020-03-27scripts/dtc: Remove redundant YYLOC global declarationDirk Mueller1-1/+0
gcc 10 will default to -fno-common, which causes this error at link time: (.text+0x0): multiple definition of `yylloc'; dtc-lexer.lex.o (symbol from plugin):(.text+0x0): first defined here This is because both dtc-lexer as well as dtc-parser define the same global symbol yyloc. Before with -fcommon those were merged into one defintion. The proper solution would be to to mark this as "extern", however that leads to: dtc-lexer.l:26:16: error: redundant redeclaration of 'yylloc' [-Werror=redundant-decls] 26 | extern YYLTYPE yylloc; | ^~~~~~ In file included from dtc-lexer.l:24: dtc-parser.tab.h:127:16: note: previous declaration of 'yylloc' was here 127 | extern YYLTYPE yylloc; | ^~~~~~ cc1: all warnings being treated as errors which means the declaration is completely redundant and can just be dropped. 2020-03-13kbuild: allow to run dt_binding_check without kernel configurationMasahiro Yamada1-2/+3
The dt_binding_check target is located outside of the 'ifneq ($(dtstree),) ... endif' block. So, you can run 'make dt_binding_check' on any architecture. This makes a perfect sense because the dt-schema is arch-agnostic. The only one problem I see is that scripts/dtc/dtc is not always built. For example, ARCH=x86 defconfig does not define CONFIG_DTC. Kbuild descends into scripts/dtc/ with doing nothing. Then, it fails to build *.example.dt.yaml files. Let's build scripts/dtc/dtc forcibly when running dt_binding_check. The dt-schema does not depend on any CONFIG option either, so you should be able to run dt_binding_check without the .config file. Going forward, you can directly run 'make dt_binding_check' in a pristine source tree. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org> Reviewed-by: Rob Herring <robh@kernel.org>
2020-02-04kbuild: rename hostprogs-y/always to hostprogs/always-yMasahiro Yamada1-2/+2
In old days, the "host-progs" syntax was used for specifying host programs. It was renamed to the current "hostprogs-y" in 2004. It is typically useful in scripts/Makefile because it allows Kbuild to selectively compile host programs based on the kernel configuration. This commit renames like follows: always -> always-y hostprogs-y -> hostprogs So, scripts/Makefile will look like this: always-$(CONFIG_BUILD_BIN2C) += ... always-$(CONFIG_KALLSYMS) += ... ... hostprogs := $(always-y) $(always-m) I think this makes more sense because a host program is always a host program, irrespective of the kernel configuration. We want to specify which ones to compile by CONFIG options, so always-y will be handier. The "always", "hostprogs-y", "hostprogs-m" will be kept for backward compatibility for a while. 2019-05-18treewide: prefix header search paths with $(srctree)/Masahiro Yamada1-3/+3
Currently, the Kbuild core manipulates header search paths in a crazy way [1]. To fix this mess, I want all Makefiles to add explicit $(srctree)/ to the search paths in the srctree. Some Makefiles are already written in that way, but not all. The goal of this work is to make the notation consistent, and finally get rid of the gross hacks. Having whitespaces after -I does not matter since commit 48f6e3cf5bc6 ("kbuild: do not drop -I without parameter"). 2018-12-13kbuild: Add support for DT binding schema checksRob Herring1-0/+4
This adds the build infrastructure for checking DT binding schema documents and validating dts files using the binding schema. Check DT binding schema documents: make dt_binding_check Build dts files and check using DT binding schema: make dtbs_check Optionally, DT_SCHEMA_FILES can be passed in with a schema file(s) to use for validation. This makes it easier to find and fix errors generated by a specific schema. Currently, the validation targets are separate from a normal build to avoid a hard dependency on the external DT schema project and because there are lots of warnings generated. 2018-10-02kbuild: consolidate Devicetree dtb build rulesRob Herring1-1/+1
There is nothing arch specific about building dtb files other than their location under /arch/*/boot/dts/. Keeping each arch aligned is a pain. The dependencies and supported targets are all slightly different. Also, a cross-compiler for each arch is needed, but really the host compiler preprocessor is perfectly fine for building dtbs. Move the build rules to a common location and remove the arch specific ones. This is done in a single step to avoid warnings about overriding rules. The build dependencies had been a mixture of 'scripts' and/or 'prepare'. These pull in several dependencies some of which need a target compiler (specifically devicetable-offsets.h) and aren't needed to build dtbs. All that is really needed is dtc, so adjust the dependencies to only be dtc. This change enables support 'dtbs_install' on some arches which were missing the target. 2018-08-22scripts/dtc: consolidate include path options in MakefileMasahiro Yamada1-14/+4
It is tedious to specify extra compiler options for every file. HOST_EXTRACFLAGS is useful to add options to all files in a directory. -I$(src)/libfdt is needed for all the files in this directory to include libfdt_env.h etc. from scripts/dtc/libfdt/. On the other hand, -I$(src) is used to include check-in headers from generated C files. Thus, I added it only to dtc-lexer.lex.o and dtc-parser.tab.o . 2018-04-24dtc: checks: drop warning for missing PCI bridge bus-rangeRob Herring1-3/+2
Cherry-picked from dtc upstream commit e1f139ea4900fd0324c646822b4061fec6e08321. Having a 'bus-range' property for PCI bridges should not be required, so remove the warning when missing. There was some confusion with the Linux kernel printing a message that no property is present and the OS assigned the bus number. This message was intended to be informational rather than a warning. When the firmware doesn't enumerate the PCI bus and leaves it up to the OS to do, then it is perfectly fine for the OS to assign bus numbers and bus-range is not necessary. There are a few cases where bus-range is needed or useful as Arnd Bergmann summarized: - Traditionally Linux avoided using multiple PCI domains, but instead configured separate PCI host bridges to have non-overlapping bus ranges so we can present them to user space as a single domain, and run the kernel without CONFIG_PCI_DOMAINS. Specifying the bus ranges this way would and give stable bus numbers across boots when the probe order is not fixed. - On certain ARM64 systems, we must only use the first 128 bus numbers based on the way the IOMMU identifies the device with truncated bus/dev/fn number. There are probably others like this, with various limitations. - To leave some room for hotplugged devices, each slot on a host bridge can in theory get a range of bus numbers that are available when assigning bus numbers at boot time Cc: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Signed-off-by: Rob Herring <robh@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: David Gibson <david@gibson.dropbear.id.au>

To summarize, we decided that architectures are responsible to serialize readl() and writel() accesses on a device MMIO space relative to DMA performed by that device. This series provides a pessimistic implementation of that behavior for asm-generic/io.h, which is in turn used by a number of architectures (h8300, microblaze, nios2, openrisc, s390, sparc, um, unicore32, and xtensa). Some of those presumably need no extra barriers, or something weaker than rmb()/wmb(), and they are advised to override the new default for better performance. For inb()/outb(), the same barriers are used, but architectures might want to add another barrier to outb() here if that can guarantee non-posted behavior (some architectures can, others cannot do that). 2018-04-07kbuild: add %.lex.c and %.tab.[ch] to 'targets' automaticallyMasahiro Yamada1-3/+0
Files generated by if_changed* must be added to 'targets' to include *.cmd files. Otherwise, they would be regenerated every time. The build system automatically adds objects to 'targets' where appropriate, such as obj-y, extra-y, etc. but does nothing for intermediate files. So, each Makefile needs to add them by itself. There are some common cases where objects are generated by chained rules. Lexers and parsers are compiled like follows: %.lex.o <- %.lex.c <- %.l %.tab.o <- %.tab.c <- %.y They are common patterns, so it is reasonable to take care of them in the core Makefile instead of requiring each Makefile to do so. At this moment, you cannot delete 'target += zconf.lex.c' in the Kconfig Makefile because zconf.lex.c is included from zconf.tab.c instead of being compiled separately. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman3-0/+3
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-06-22scripts/dtc: dtx_diff - Show real file names in diff headerGeert Uytterhoeven1-1/+1
As the comparison uses process substitution to pass files after conversion to DTS format, the diff header doesn't show the real filenames, but the names of the file descriptors used: --- /dev/fd/63 2017-06-22 11:21:47.531637188 +0200 +++ /dev/fd/62 2017-06-22 11:21:47.531637188 +0200 This is especially annoying when comparing a bunch of DT files in a loop, as the output doesn't show a clue about which files it refers to. Fix this by explicitly passing the original file names to the diff command using the --label option, giving e.g.: --- arch/arm/boot/dts/r8a7791-koelsch.dtb +++ arch/arm/boot/dts/r8a7791-porter.dtb Signed-off-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert+renesas@glider.be> Reviewed-by: Frank Rowand <frank.rowand@sony.com> Signed-off-by: Rob Herring <robh@kernel.org>

2017-05-18devicetree: Move include prefixes from arch to separate directoryOlof Johansson15-0/+15
We use a directory under arch/$ARCH/boot/dts as an include path that has links outside of the subtree to find dt-bindings from under include/dt-bindings. That's been working well, but new DT architectures haven't been adding them by default. Recently there's been a desire to share some of the DT material between arm and arm64, which originally caused developers to create symlinks or relative includes between the subtrees. This isn't ideal -- it breaks if the DT files aren't stored in the exact same hierarchy as the kernel tree, and generally it's just icky. As a somewhat cleaner solution we decided to add a $ARCH/ prefix link once, and allow DTS files to reference dtsi (and dts) files in other architectures that way. Original approach was to create these links under each architecture, but it lead to the problem of recursive symlinks. As a remedy, move the include link directories out of the architecture trees into a common location. At the same time, they can now share one directory and one dt-bindings/ link as well. 2015-04-29scripts/dtc: add missing libfdt and fixups to import scriptGaurav Minocha1-0/+9
The following script is used to import dtc upstream into kernel. It was missing import of dtc/libfdt, with this commit it will include the same. Also, currently in arch and driver code that needs early access to the flattened device tree it is necessary to add specific CFLAGS so that when scripts/dtc/libfdt/libfdt.h is included the C preprocessor is able to locate the libfdt versions of libfdt_env.h and fdt.h without generating an error. So, this script replaces angular brackets with quotation used to include header files fdt.h and libfdt_env.h Signed-off-by: Gaurav Minocha <gaurav.minocha.os@gmail.com> [robh: reword commit headline and add 'git add'] Signed-off-by: Rob Herring <robh@kernel.org>

2013-06-13dtc: ensure #line directives don't consume data from the next lineGrant Likely2-117/+117
Previously, the #line parsing regex ended with ({WS}+[0-9]+)?. The {WS} could match line-break characters. If the #line directive did not contain the optional flags field at the end, this could cause any integer data on the next line to be consumed as part of the #line directive parsing. This could cause syntax errors (i.e. #line parsing consuming the leading 0 from a hex literal 0x1234, leaving x1234 to be parsed as cell data, which is a syntax error), or invalid compilation results (i.e. simply consuming literal 1234 as part of the #line processing, thus removing it from the cell data). Fix this by replacing {WS} with [ \t] so that it can't match line-breaks. Convert all instances of {WS}, even though the other instances should be irrelevant for any well-formed #line directive. This is done for consistency and ultimate safety. 2013-06-13dtc: Update generated files to output from Bison 2.5Grant Likely2-341/+388
This patch merely updates the generated dtc parser and lexer files to the output generated by Bison 2.5. The previous versions were generated from version 2.4.1. The only reason for this commit is to minimize the diff on the next commit which fixes a bug in the DTC #line directive parsing. 2009-05-02Move dtc and libfdt sources from arch/powerpc/boot to scripts/dtcDavid Gibson29-0/+11161
The powerpc kernel always requires an Open Firmware like device tree to supply device information. On systems without OF, this comes from a flattened device tree blob. This blob is usually generated by dtc, a tool which compiles a text description of the device tree into the flattened format used by the kernel. Sometimes, the bootwrapper makes small changes to the pre-compiled device tree blob (e.g. filling in the size of RAM). To do this it uses the libfdt library. Because these are only used on powerpc, the code for both these tools is included under arch/powerpc/boot (these were imported and are periodically updated from the upstream dtc tree). However, the microblaze architecture, currently being prepared for merging to mainline also uses dtc to produce device tree blobs. A few other archs have also mentioned some interest in using dtc. Therefore, this patch moves dtc and libfdt from arch/powerpc into scripts, where it can be used by any architecture. The vast bulk of this patch is a literal move, the rest is adjusting the various Makefiles to use dtc and libfdt correctly from their new locations.
