4 daysFix jsonb_object_agg crash after eliminating null-valued pairs.Tom Lane
In commit b61aa76e4 I added an assumption in jsonb_object_agg_finalfn that it'd be okay to apply uniqueifyJsonbObject repeatedly to a JsonbValue. I should have studied that code more closely first, because in skip_nulls mode it removed leading nulls by changing the "pairs" array start pointer. This broke the data structure's invariants in two ways: pairs no longer references a repalloc-able chunk, and the distance from pairs to the end of its array is less than parseState->size. So any subsequent addition of more pairs is at high risk of clobbering memory and/or causing repalloc to crash. Unfortunately, adding more pairs is exactly what will happen when the aggregate is being used as a window function. Fix by rewriting uniqueifyJsonbObject to not do that. The prior coding had little to recommend it anyway. 10 daysMicro-optimize datatype conversions in datum_to_jsonb_internal.Tom Lane
The general case for converting to a JSONB numeric value is to run the source datatype's output function and then numeric_in, but we can do substantially better than that for integer and numeric source values. This patch improves the speed of jsonb_agg by 30% for integer input, and nearly 2X for numeric input. Sadly, the obvious idea of using float4_numeric and float8_numeric to speed up those cases doesn't work: they are actually slower than the generic coerce-via-I/O method, and not by a small amount. They might round off differently than this code has historically done, too. Leave that alone pending possible changes in those functions. We can also do better than the existing code for text/varchar/bpchar source data; this optimization is similar to one that already exists in the json_agg() code. That saves 20% or so for such inputs. Also make a couple of other minor improvements, such as not giving JSONTYPE_CAST its own special case outside the switch when it could perfectly well be handled inside, and not using dubious string hacking to detect infinity and NaN results. The various variants of jsonb_agg() operate as follows, for each aggregate input value: 1. Build a JsonbValue tree representation of the input value. 2. Flatten the JsonbValue tree into a Jsonb in on-disk format. 3. Iterate through the Jsonb, building a JsonbValue that is part of the aggregate's state stored in aggcontext, but is otherwise identical to what phase 1 built. This is very slightly less silly than it sounds, because phase 1 involves calling non-JSONB code such as datatype output functions, which are likely to leak memory, and we don't want to leak into the aggcontext. Nonetheless, phases 2 and 3 are accomplishing exactly nothing that is useful if we can make phase 1 put the JsonbValue tree where we need it. We could probably do that with a bunch of MemoryContextSwitchTo's, but what seems more robust is to give pushJsonbValue the responsibility of building the JsonbValue tree in a specified non-current memory context. The previous patch created the infrastructure for that, and this patch simply makes the aggregate functions use it and then rips out phases 2 and 3. For me, this makes jsonb_agg() with a text column as input run about 2X faster than before. It's not yet on par with json_agg(), but this removes a whole lot of the difference. Instead of passing "JsonbParseState **" to pushJsonbValue(), pass a pointer to a JsonbInState, which will contain the parseState stack pointer as well as other useful fields. Also, instead of returning a JsonbValue pointer that is often meaningless/ignored, return the top-level JsonbValue pointer in the "result" field of the JsonbInState. This involves a lot of (mostly mechanical) edits, but I think the results are notationally cleaner and easier to understand. Certainly the business with sometimes capturing the result of pushJsonbValue() and sometimes not was bug-prone and incapable of mechanical verification. In the new arrangement, JsonbInState.result remains null until we've completed a valid sequence of pushes, so that an incorrect sequence will result in a null-pointer dereference, not mistaken use of a partial result. However, this isn't simply an exercise in prettier notation. The real reason for doing it is to provide a mechanism whereby pushJsonbValue() can be told to construct the JsonbValue tree in a context that is not CurrentMemoryContext. That happens when a non-null "outcontext" is specified in the JsonbInState. No callers exercise that option in this patch, but the next patch in the series will make use of it. Various places that were using StringInfo but didn't need that StringInfo to exist beyond the scope of the function were using makeStringInfo(), which allocates both a StringInfoData and the buffer it uses as two separate allocations. It's more efficient for these cases to use a StringInfoData on the stack and initialize it with initStringInfo(), which only allocates the string buffer. This also simplifies the cleanup, in a few cases. Commit 3c152a27b06 mistakenly repeated JSONTYPE_JSON in a condition, omitting JSONTYPE_CAST. As a result, datum_to_jsonb_internal() failed to reject inputs that were casts (e.g., from an enum to json as in the example below) when used as keys in JSON constructors. This led to a crash in cases like: SELECT JSON_OBJECT('happy'::mood: '123'::jsonb); where 'happy'::mood is implicitly cast to json. The missing check meant such casted values weren’t properly rejected as invalid (non-scalar) JSON keys. Formerly, these cases threw an error "cannot cast jsonb null to type <whatever>". That seems less than helpful though. It's also inconsistent with the behavior of the ->> operator, which translates JSON null to SQL NULL, as do some other jsonb functions. 2024-07-27Optimize escaping of JSON stringsDavid Rowley
There were quite a few places where we either had a non-NUL-terminated string or a text Datum which we needed to call escape_json() on. Many of these places required that a temporary string was created due to the fact that escape_json() needs a NUL-terminated cstring. For text types, those first had to be converted to cstring before calling escape_json() on them. Here we introduce two new functions to make escaping JSON more optimal: escape_json_text() can be given a text Datum to append onto the given buffer. This is more optimal as it foregoes the need to convert the text Datum into a cstring. A temporary allocation is only required if the text Datum needs to be detoasted. escape_json_with_len() can be used when the length of the cstring is already known or the given string isn't NUL-terminated. Having this allows various places which were creating a temporary NUL-terminated string to just call escape_json_with_len() without any temporary memory allocations. This introduces the following SQL/JSON functions for querying JSON data using jsonpath expressions: JSON_EXISTS(), which can be used to apply a jsonpath expression to a JSON value to check if it yields any values. JSON_QUERY(), which can be used to to apply a jsonpath expression to a JSON value to get a JSON object, an array, or a string. There are various options to control whether multi-value result uses array wrappers and whether the singleton scalar strings are quoted or not. JSON_VALUE(), which can be used to apply a jsonpath expression to a JSON value to return a single scalar value, producing an error if it multiple values are matched. Both JSON_VALUE() and JSON_QUERY() functions have options for handling EMPTY and ERROR conditions, which can be used to specify the behavior when no values are matched and when an error occurs during jsonpath evaluation, respectively. as determined by include-what-you-use (IWYU) While IWYU also suggests to *add* a bunch of #include's (which is its main purpose), this patch does not do that. In some cases, a more specific #include replaces another less specific one. Some manual adjustments of the automatic result: - IWYU currently doesn't know about includes that provide global variable declarations (like -Wmissing-variable-declarations), so those includes are being kept manually. - All includes for port(ability) headers are being kept for now, to play it safe. - No changes of catalog/pg_foo.h to catalog/pg_foo_d.h, to keep the patch from exploding in size. Note that this patch touches just *.c files, so nothing declared in header files changes in hidden ways. As a small example, in src/backend/access/transam/rmgr.c, some IWYU pragma annotations are added to handle a special case there. 2023-10-05Improve JsonLexContext's freeabilityAlvaro Herrera
Previously, the JSON code didn't have to worry too much about freeing JsonLexContext, because it was never too long-lived. With new features being added for SQL/JSON this is no longer the case. Add a routine that knows how to free this struct and apply that to a few places, to prevent this from becoming problematic. At the same time, we change the API of makeJsonLexContextCstringLen to make it receive a pointer to JsonLexContext for callers that want it to be stack-allocated; it can also be passed as NULL to get the original behavior of a palloc'ed one. This also causes an ABI break due to the addition of flags to JsonLexContext, so we can't easily backpatch it. AFAICS that's not much of a problem; apparently some leaks might exist in JSON usage of text-search, for example via json_to_tsvector, but I haven't seen any complaints about that. JSON_SCALAR() produces a json value from any scalar sql value, including json and jsonb. JSON_SERIALIZE() produces text or bytea from input which containis or represents json or jsonb; For the most part these functions don't add any significant new capabilities, but they will be of use to users wanting standard compliant JSON handling. 2023-07-20Unify JSON categorize type API and export for external useAmit Langote
This essentially removes the JsonbTypeCategory enum and jsonb_categorize_type() and integrates any jsonb-specific logic that was in jsonb_categorize_type() into json_categorize_type(), now moved to jsonfuncs.c. The remaining JsonTypeCategory enum and json_categorize_type() cover the needs of the callers in both json.c and jsonb.c. json_categorize_type() has grown a new parameter named is_jsonb for callers to engage the jsonb-specific behavior of json_categorize_type(). One notable change in the now exported API of json_categorize_type() is that it now always returns *outfuncoid even though a caller may have no need currently to see one. This is in preparation of later commits to implement additional SQL/JSON functions. 2023-01-20Use appendStringInfoSpaces in more placesDavid Rowley
This adjusts a few places which were appending a string constant containing spaces onto a StringInfo. We have appendStringInfoSpaces for that job, so let's use that instead. For the change to jsonb.c's add_indent() function, appendStringInfoString was being called inside a loop to append 4 spaces on each loop. This meant that enlargeStringInfo would get called once per loop. Here it should be much more efficient to get rid of the loop and just calculate the number of spaces with "level * 4" and just append all the spaces in one go. Here we additionally adjust the appendStringInfoSpaces function so it makes use of memset rather than a while loop to apply the required spaces to the StringInfo. One of the problems with the while loop was that it was incrementing one variable and decrementing another variable once per loop. That's more work than what's required to get the job done. We may as well use memset for this rather than trying to optimize the existing loop. Some testing has shown memset is faster even for very small sizes. 2022-12-11Convert json_in and jsonb_in to report errors softly.Tom Lane
This requires a bit of further infrastructure-extension to allow trapping errors reported by numeric_in and pg_unicode_to_server, but otherwise it's pretty straightforward. In the case of jsonb_in, we are only capturing errors reported during the initial "parse" phase. The value-construction phase (JsonbValueToJsonb) can also throw errors if assorted implementation limits are exceeded. We should improve that, but it seems like a separable project. 2022-12-11Change JsonSemAction to allow non-throw error reporting.Tom Lane
Formerly, semantic action functions for the JSON parser returned void, so that there was no way for them to affect the parser's behavior. That means in particular that they can't force an error exit except by longjmp'ing. That won't do in the context of our project to make input functions return errors softly. Hence, change them to return the same JsonParseErrorType enum value as the parser itself uses. If an action function returns anything besides JSON_SUCCESS, the parse is abandoned and that error code is returned. Action functions can thus easily return the same error conditions that the parser already knows about. As an escape hatch for expansion, also invent a code JSON_SEM_ACTION_FAILED that the core parser does not know the exact meaning of. When returning this code, an action function must use some out-of-band mechanism for reporting the error details. This commit simply makes the API change and causes all the existing action functions to return JSON_SUCCESS, so that there is no actual change in behavior here. This is long enough and boring enough that it seemed best to commit it separately from the changes that make real use of the new mechanism. Make sure that function declarations use names that exactly match the corresponding names from function definitions in optimizer, parser, utility, libpq, and "commands" code, as well as in remaining library code. Do the same for all code related to frontend programs (with the exception of pg_dump/pg_dumpall related code). Like other recent commits that cleaned up function parameter names, this commit was written with help from clang-tidy. Later commits will handle ecpg and pg_dump/pg_dumpall. 2022-07-01Add construct_array_builtin, deconstruct_array_builtinPeter Eisentraut
There were many calls to construct_array() and deconstruct_array() for built-in types, for example, when dealing with system catalog columns. These all hardcoded the type attributes necessary to pass to these functions. To simplify this a bit, add construct_array_builtin(), deconstruct_array_builtin() as wrappers that centralize this hardcoded knowledge. This simplifies many call sites and reduces the amount of hardcoded stuff that is spread around. This Patch introduces three SQL standard JSON functions: JSON() (incorrectly mentioned in my commit message for f4fb45d15c) JSON_SCALAR() JSON_SERIALIZE() JSON() produces json values from text, bytea, json or jsonb values, and has facilitites for handling duplicate keys. JSON_SCALAR() produces a json value from any scalar sql value, including json and jsonb. JSON_SERIALIZE() produces text or bytea from input which containis or represents json or jsonb; For the most part these functions don't add any significant new capabilities, but they will be of use to users wanting standard compliant JSON handling. This introduces the SQL/JSON functions for querying JSON data using jsonpath expressions. The functions are: JSON_EXISTS() JSON_QUERY() JSON_VALUE() All of these functions only operate on jsonb. The workaround for now is to cast the argument to jsonb. JSON_EXISTS() tests if the jsonpath expression applied to the jsonb value yields any values. JSON_VALUE() must return a single value, and an error occurs if it tries to return multiple values. JSON_QUERY() must return a json object or array, and there are various WRAPPER options for handling scalar or multi-value results. Both these functions have options for handling EMPTY and ERROR conditions. However, they also offer some useful additional functionality. In addition to text input, the JSON() function accepts bytea input, which it will decode and constuct a json value from. The other functions provide useful options for handling duplicate keys and null values. This series of patches will be followed by a consolidated documentation patch. 2020-03-19Introduce "anycompatible" family of polymorphic types.Tom Lane
This patch adds the pseudo-types anycompatible, anycompatiblearray, anycompatiblenonarray, and anycompatiblerange. They work much like anyelement, anyarray, anynonarray, and anyrange respectively, except that the actual input values need not match precisely in type. Instead, if we can find a common supertype (using the same rules as for UNION/CASE type resolution), then the parser automatically promotes the input values to that type. For example, "myfunc(anycompatible, anycompatible)" can match a call with one integer and one bigint argument, with the integer automatically promoted to bigint. With anyelement in the definition, the user would have had to cast the integer explicitly. The new types also provide a second, independent set of type variables for function matching; thus with "myfunc(anyelement, anyelement, anycompatible) returns anycompatible" the first two arguments are constrained to be the same type, but the third can be some other type, and the result has the type of the third argument. The need for more than one set of type variables was foreseen back when we first invented the polymorphic types, but we never did anything about it. 2020-03-04Introduce macros for typalign and typstorage constants.Tom Lane
Our usual practice for "poor man's enum" catalog columns is to define macros for the possible values and use those, not literal constants, in C code. But for some reason lost in the mists of time, this was never done for typalign/attalign or typstorage/attstorage. It's never too late to make it better though, so let's do that. The reason I got interested in this right now is the need to duplicate some uses of the TYPSTORAGE constants in an upcoming ALTER TYPE patch. But in general, this sort of change aids greppability and readability, so it's a good idea even without any specific motivation. I may have missed a few places that could be converted, and it's even more likely that pending patches will re-introduce some hard-coded references. Instead, it now returns a value indicating either success or the type of error which occurred. The old behavior is still available by calling pg_parse_json_or_ereport(). If the new interface is used, an error can be thrown by passing the return value of pg_parse_json() to json_ereport_error(). pg_parse_json() can still elog() in can't-happen cases, but it seems like that issue is best handled separately. Adjust json_lex() and json_count_array_elements() to return an error code, too. This is all in preparation for making the backend's json parser available to frontend code. SQL/JSON standard allows manipulation with datetime values. So, it appears to be convinient to allow datetime values to be represented in JsonbValue struct. These datetime values are allowed for temporary representation only. During serialization datetime values are converted into strings. SQL/JSON requires writing timestamps with timezone in the same timezone offset as they were parsed. This is why we allow storage of timezone offset in JsonbValue struct. For the same reason timezone offset argument is added to JsonEncodeDateTime() function. Extracted from original patch by Nikita Glukhov, Teodor Sigaev, Oleg Bartunov. Revised by me. SQL 2016 standards among other things contains set of SQL/JSON features for JSON processing inside of relational database. The core of SQL/JSON is JSON path language, allowing access parts of JSON documents and make computations over them. This commit implements partial support JSON path language as separate datatype called "jsonpath". The implementation is partial because it's lacking datetime support and suppression of numeric errors. Missing features will be added later by separate commits. Support of SQL/JSON features requires implementation of separate nodes, and it will be considered in subsequent patches. This commit includes following set of plain functions, allowing to execute jsonpath over jsonb values: * jsonb_path_exists(jsonb, jsonpath[, jsonb, bool]), * jsonb_path_match(jsonb, jsonpath[, jsonb, bool]), * jsonb_path_query(jsonb, jsonpath[, jsonb, bool]), * jsonb_path_query_array(jsonb, jsonpath[, jsonb, bool]). * jsonb_path_query_first(jsonb, jsonpath[, jsonb, bool]). This commit also implements "jsonb @? jsonpath" and "jsonb @@ jsonpath", which are wrappers over jsonpath_exists(jsonb, jsonpath) and jsonpath_predicate(jsonb, jsonpath) correspondingly. These operators will have an index support (implemented in subsequent patches). Catversion bumped, to add new functions and operators.
