This doesn't provide any value over the standard style of checking the
pointer directly or comparing against NULL.
Also remove related:
- AllocPointerIsValid() [unused]
- IndexScanIsValid() [had one user]
- HeapScanIsValid() [unused]
- InvalidRelation [unused]
Leaving HeapTupleIsValid(), ItemIdIsValid(), PortalIsValid(),
RelationIsValid for now, to reduce code churn.

Remove the Trap and TrapMacro macros, which were nearly unused
and confusingly had the opposite condition polarity from the
otherwise-functionally-equivalent Assert macros.
Having done that, it's very hard to justify carrying the errorType
argument of ExceptionalCondition, so drop that too, and just
let it assume everything's an Assert. This saves about 64K
of code space as of current HEAD.

Add some support for automatically showing backtraces in certain error
situations in the server. Backtraces are shown on assertion failure;
also, a new setting backtrace_functions can be set to a list of C
function names, and all ereport()s and elog()s from the mentioned
functions will have backtraces generated. Finally, the function
errbacktrace() can be manually added to an ereport() call to generate a
backtrace for that call.

In ancient times, it was thought that this wouldn't work because of
TrapMacro/AssertMacro, but changing those to use a comma operator
appears to work without compiler warnings.

PG_RE_THROW() doesn't return. Insert fflush(stderr) in ExceptionalCondition,
per recent buildfarm evidence that that might not happen automatically on some

Also performed an initial run through of upgrading our Copyright date to
extend to 2005 ... first run here was very simple ... change everything
where: grep 1996-2004 && the word 'Copyright' ... scanned through the
generated list with 'less' first, and after, to make sure that I only
picked up the right entries ...

routine to do something appropriate on Win32. Also, add a security check
on Win32 that parallels the can't-run-as-root check on Unix.

error handling, and simplifies the code that remains. Apparently,
the code that left Berkeley had a whole "error handling subsystem",
which exceptions and whatnot. Since we don't use that anymore,
there's no reason to keep it around.
The regression tests pass with the patch applied. Unless anyone
sees a problem, please apply.

That means you can now set your options in either or all of $PGDATA/configuration,
some postmaster option (--enable-fsync=off), or set a SET command. The list of
options is in backend/utils/misc/guc.c, documentation will be written post haste.
pg_options is gone, so is that pq_geqo config file. Also removed were backend -K,
-Q, and -T options (no longer applicable, although -d0 does the same as -Q).
Added to configure an --enable-syslog option.
