š In GRESBās latest Insights article, GRESB Partner Verdani Partners highlights why embodied carbon is becoming one of the most criticalāand least understoodādrivers of climate impact in the built environment. As operational emissions decline through efficiency and renewable energy, embodied carbon is projected to represent up to half of total building lifecycle emissions by 2050. Because these emissions are locked in at the moment of construction, early material decisions matter more than ever. The article explores innovation pathways across four major materials shaping the future of low-carbon construction: š§ Steel: Hydrogen-based production, electric arc furnaces, and molten oxide electrolysis are unlocking pathways for āgreenā steel. šļø Concrete: Kiln electrification, alternative binders, and carbon capture are driving the next wave of low-carbon cement. š² Mass timber: Engineered wood stores carbon and offers strong structural performance with reduced construction impacts. šæ Insulation: Bio-based solutions like mycelium and hemp reduce reliance on fossil fuelāderived materials. š± Reducing embodied carbon is essential not only to climate goals but also to strengthening community resilience and long-term asset value. š Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/drR2Ski6 #GRESBInsights #Sustainability #EmbodiedCarbon #Decarbonization #RealAssets
