Jharkhand destroys over 3,000 kg of narcotics in drug destruction drive

Over 3,061 kg of seized narcotics, including poppy straw and marijuana, were destroyed in Seraikela-Kharsawan, Jharkhand, as part of a nationwide initiative by the Narcotics Control Bureau. The destruction occurred at a state-run facility, with opium being sent for processing into alkaloids. This drive, directed by the Union Home Minister, aims to establish drug disposal facilities in all districts.

Jamshedpur: A total of 3,061.65 kg of narcotics were destroyed at the state-run treatment storage disposal facility in Seraikela-Kharsawan on Tuesday. The substances included 2,850 kg of poppy straw and 250 kg of marijuana, which were seized by the law-enforcing agencies in the 24 districts of Jharkhand between Jan and Aug this year. They were destroyed at an incinerator at the disposal facility at Sini.The Adityapur Waste Management Pvt Ltd (AWMPL) scientifically destroyed the drugs in a controlled way in adherence to the environmental regulations, officials said. Notably, AWMPL operates the state’s only bio and industrial waste facility in Seraikela-Kharsawan.This apart, treatment of the 25 kg opium was done at the plant and the consignment will be sent to the state-run opium and alkaloid industry at Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, where the substance will be processed into alkaloids of pharmacopoeial grades, officials added.“The exercise has been conducted in line with the nationwide destruction drive being carried out today by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB),” said Abhishek Anand, zonal director, Jharkhand Narcotics Control Board.The drive was carried out across India simultaneously for the second time in 2025 on the direction of the Union home minister, Amit Shah, officials said.On Jan 11, a total of 15,450 kg of seized narcotics were destroyed at the treatment and disposal facility in Seraikela. “Soon, police will carry out the destruction and treatment of the narcotic drugs in their respective districts as facilities are being set up in all the districts in this regard,” Anand said.
