LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Few of us would pass up the opportunity to score something for free, but there are some offers you should definitely turn down. Here’s what to look out for:

You’ll get an email from a trusted brand like Costco or AARP that promises you a gift if you fill out a short survey and pay a small shipping fee. It’ll claim there are only a few items available, so it will urge you to act fast. And of course, it provides a link to take you directly to their site.

However, both the website and the survey are fake, and there’s no free gift waiting for you. The small shipping fee is how scammers can access to your personal and banking information. They can use those details to steal your money and your identity.

Legitimate companies and organizations will not ask you to pay shipping or handling for a free promotional item. Remember -- think before you click! If you have doubts about an email, visit the company’s official website or app to confirm the information provided, and verify the legitimacy of any special offers. Be skeptical on any offer that seems too good to be true, even if it comes from a brand you know and trust.
