LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The change of seasons typically sparks a rise in reports of home improvement scams. Fortunately, these types of rip-offs are easy to avoid if you know what to watch out for.

First, be wary of any contractor who demands payment up front. Paying for a job before it’s finished removes any control you have over the quality and timeliness of the work. Plus, a scammer will take your money and disappear without even lifting a hammer.

Next, be suspicious of someone who shows up uninvited and offers to make repairs. Legitimate contractors are usually too busy to peddle their services door-to-door. Similarly, watch out for someone who says they can start a job immediately. Most highly-rated contractors have a backlog of jobs and clients that extends at least six weeks out. And, be skeptical if they pressure you to start the work quickly. A true pro will give you the time and space to get other bids before making a decision.

Finally, walk away if they won’t provide you with a contract. Everything should be in writing before the work begins.

Word of mouth often proves most reliable when hiring a contractor, so ask your friends, family, and colleagues for referrals. You can also ask the contractor to provide references, and be sure to check their online reviews. You’ll want to look for photos of recently completed projects on their website or social media. And, be sure to verify their licensing.

Experts advise getting at least three bids for a project, and expect them to be fairly close in price. A dramatically lower bid can be a warning sign. If the contractor wants a deposit, it should be no more than a third of the job’s total cost. Also, be sure to keep detailed records and hold on to receipts. And remember, always do a thorough walkthrough and inspection of the project before handing over the final payment.
