Seminar teachers Las Vegas Valley seniors scam prevention ahead of holidays
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The holiday season brings out a unique breed of scammers. But Wednesday night, some Las Vegas Valley seniors are better prepared to fend them off.
The seniors attended a special seminar put on by the Nevada Secretary of State’s office. They learned what to watch out for and how to verify any claims made online or via text message. Experts say texts are especially popular with impersonators.
“Sometimes they will get a text message that sounds like it’s from somebody who’s in their family or who says they’re an old friend and they’re more likely to be generous and to give of their money at the holidays,” said Erin Houston, deputy secretary of State for Securities.
Experts warn scammers can use AI to create authentic-sounding fake voice messages as well. They urge to make sure the request is coming from the real person before sending anyone any money.
