Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) was pleased to have Erin Saltman, PhD, our Senior Director of Membership & Programs, speak this week at the Regional Workshop on the Role of Youth in Upholding the Rule of Law and Enhancing Strategic Communications in the Digital Space to Prevent Violent Extremism in South Asia. Organized by UNODC, UNAFEI, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and the European Union, the workshop brought together regional stakeholders to strengthen youth engagement and digital strategies for preventing violent extremism. Erin contributed to three sessions, covering: ➡️ How digital spaces are shaping youth engagement and violent extremism, and how platforms and practitioners can respond. ➡️ Violent extremist organisations’ online tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs)—including differentiating propaganda, misinformation, and disinformation, and practical approaches to countering them. ➡️ Audience segmentation and effective strategic communications in online prevention efforts. GIFCT is proud to support collaborative, multi-stakeholder efforts that advance safer digital environments and evidence-based approaches to countering violent extremism. We are grateful for the opportunity to engage with these meaningful discussions and look forward to continued collaboration. #GIFCT #UNODC #UNAFEI #MOFAJapan #EU #OnlineSafety

Global Network on Extremism & Technology (GNET)’s new Gender and Online Violent Extremism series, aligning with the UN’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, has launched with three important examinations of how misogynistic and extremist ideologies evolve and intersect online. ➡️ In her opening article, Erin S. explores how parts of the manosphere – including some incel communities – use fundamentalist sexual narratives to legitimise misogynistic ideologies and online abuse. Her work reinforces the need to treat extremist misogyny as a serious, distinct online harm. 🔗 Read: Sanctifying Violence: Sex, Power and Online Extremist Misogyny https://lnkd.in/emQUu_Dg ➡️ Building on this, Ryan Ratnam’s new piece examines the racial dimensions of misogynistic extremism, highlighting how intersectional dynamics shape identity, grievance, and mobilisation within the incelosphere. 🔗 Read: Intersectionality in the Incelosphere: Understanding the Racial Dimensions of Misogynistic Extremism https://lnkd.in/gjv-8r_Z ➡️ Finally, Christopher David and Martin Risius analyses fractures within white supremacist movements regarding the role of women, revealing how gender ideology influences internal debates, recruitment, and strategic narratives. 🔗 Read: Fractures on the Storm Front: Contesting the Role of Women in White Supremacy https://lnkd.in/e3gevbq9 Together, these articles underscore the complex, evolving nature of gendered extremism online - and the urgent need for nuanced, evidence-based responses. Stay tuned for more Insights as part of this series. #GIFCT #GNET #GenderBasedViolence #OnlineSafety #CounterViolentExtremism #TechForGood

Keeping violent extremist content off platforms requires fast, coordinated action. The Hash-Sharing Database (HSDB) is Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT)’s cross-platform tool that allows members to share perceptual hashes - digital fingerprints - of known terrorist and violent extremist content. By sharing these hashes, platforms can prevent harmful content from spreading, reducing risk and improving safety online. The HSDB is more than a database - it’s a collaborative tool enabling the industry to respond quickly, efficiently, and collectively to evolving online threats. ➡️ Learn more about our HSDB: https://gifct.org/hsdb/ #GIFCT #HSDB #CounterViolentExtremism #OnlineSafety #TechForGood
