🦃 This Thanksgiving, let's turn our gratitude into action by tackling food waste. The abundance of the holiday often comes with a hidden cost: wasted food. In Los Angeles County, approximately 4,000 tons of food waste are generated every day. When this food rots in landfills, it produces methane, a greenhouse gas 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide, contributing significantly to climate change. 🍂 A few simple changes in your holiday routine can have a huge positive impact on your wallet and the planet, including using an online portion planning tool, checking your fridge and pantry to avoid buying duplicates, maximizing leftovers by repurposing and freezing them, and using the green bin for food scraps that can't be eaten. 💡 By reducing waste, we're not only saving money but also protecting our air and water, and helping out region reach its climate goals.

🌊 Annual King Tides offer a chance to observe and experience what future baseline ocean conditions will be with continuing sea-level rise. The next statewide King Tides days are December 4-6 at different times and locations. "King tides" is a non-scientific, popular term for perigean spring tides, which are the highest predicted high tides and lowest predicted low tides of the year at a coastal location. ❗ New to King Tides? The Coastal Commission is hosting a King Tides webinar on December 2 (12pm-12:30pm) covering how to participate and tips for taking great photos. This community science project is critical for planners, researchers, and community members to visualize and track change over time, calibrate sea-level rise models, and garner support for coastal resilience measures. 👉 Check the King Tides tide map to find exact high-tide times and to see local events and photo upload instructions. According to new findings from USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences LABarometer Survey, Angelenos are united around a simple truth: we need more shade—and we need it now. Across neighborhoods, residents are voicing clear support for expanding, maintaining, and investing in our urban tree canopy.🌳 What the data shows is what our partners and researchers already know: Shade is a public good—and delivering it requires cross-sector collaboration. From city partners and community organizations to researchers and residents, the shade game is a team sport. And LA is more than ready to play. 💪 Dive deeper into the findings ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gMPgvSx3 #ShadeLA #UrbanForestry #ClimateResilience #CommunityImpact #SystemsChange UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works USDA Forest Service Los Angeles County Chief Sustainability Office (CSO)
